They gave this incredibly vague, non-answer when asked about the 3DS version :(

In a statement, Square Enix told IGN: "Our aim with Dragon Quest XI and the Dragon Quest brand is to grow the audience in the West. From a business point of view, it made strategic sense to release the 3DS version in Japan in 2017. For the West in 2018, it made the most sense to focus on the PlayStation 4 and PC (Steam) platforms."

Yep 3DS is dead console now, and the English script will take half the screen so I doubt they’ll even bring it to US, fan translation is our only option

Fan translation may or may not happen after western release. most people will play it on Pc & ps4.
But Fan translation will be easier for 3ds by using pc scripts.

Unless they use Denuvo or similar in which case the PC scripts won't help much. Neither will the PS4 unless emunand support ever comes to the ps4 scene. Oddly enough, emunand was a PSP thing (Devhook) long before the 3ds even came out.

i mean no matter how bad the drm is they can get a big boost in translating the majority of it by simply copying the text by hand

That would require carefully playing the game to 100% completion while manually writing everything down which would almost certainly take longer than translating the 3ds script from scratch.

i'll be sad if in the future they announce a localization for the switch but not for the 3ds :(
SE stated that the Switch ver is coming later, but didn’t comment on the 3DS so yea don’t hold your breath, and if PS4/PC has the MHW success doubt there’ll be Switch ver either lol

Nintendo does seem to like DQ games, so there's a chance that even if SQEnix doesn't give a rat's ass about anything but the PS4 version and a half-assed Steam port, Nintendo may push to get at least the Switch version done. IIRC, they were the driving force behind all of the DQ localizations we got on DS (IIRC, they did all the advertising for DQ9 and were responsible for DQ6 even getting a release), and might well have been behind SQEnix's sudden change of heart on the DQ7 remake three years after the JP release.
