Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Yesterday we had a whole slew of new games revealed on Nintendo's latest Direct, but the title that stood out as the presentation ended, was Super Smash Bros.

One thing Nintendo conveniently forgot to mention or hint at in any way; is the game a port of the WiiU Smash, following the trend of a lot of the current AAA Switch library? Or is it an entirely new Smash, just for Switch? Or maybe it's a mix of the 2, a DX version?

We've already had a ton of theories in the Super Smash Brothers announce thread - but here, we would like you to cast a vote!

I'm pretty sure that it's not going to be an port, The Nintendo Switch would sell even better if they'd make a new version rather then port the version of the Wii U that a lot of people have played already.

The biggest sign that it isn't a port is that Nintendo would have just told us that it was a port instead of leaving us wanting more. Excuse me for being crude, but they won't touch us in the morning and walk away.

Yeah, once they start revealing the base/unlockable roster one by one, new game will be confirmed.

I don't even pay attention to Xbox/Sony anymore. It is all Bethesda and Nintendo for me.

Only good reason would be significant gameplay changes, like a VR version. Everything else is just a re-release of the same game on a different platform, so it's just choosing your preferred system.

yea that's it, and I'd rather take a 3ds to school because it won't really get stolen but when i bring my switch to school it's a whole new story.

Switch is a little big to get away with playing where you're not supposed to, but one perk of adulthood is that they don't really care if I play during downtime at work.

I'd like to use it in lunch and on the bus. I can hide it. If I(may) be able to hid basil that looks like weed from a cop than i can def hide a switch from a bunch of black dudes.

some months ago they registered a patent on the smash melee logo, and it says "2018 nintendo" but it also says "original game nintendo/ hal laboratory"
imo it's some DX version of melee extra content since people have been asking for a remake for forever now
Melee still has a big presence in fighting game tournaments so it's not too much of a stretch to consider they'd actually give people an updated version.

( if it's really melee I hope they keep the ugly/inaccurate 3D models )
