Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Yesterday we had a whole slew of new games revealed on Nintendo's latest Direct, but the title that stood out as the presentation ended, was Super Smash Bros.

One thing Nintendo conveniently forgot to mention or hint at in any way; is the game a port of the WiiU Smash, following the trend of a lot of the current AAA Switch library? Or is it an entirely new Smash, just for Switch? Or maybe it's a mix of the 2, a DX version?

We've already had a ton of theories in the Super Smash Brothers announce thread - but here, we would like you to cast a vote!

I say it's definitely a new game, considering the Copyright info just says 2018, whereas ports usually have the original release date and the port release date listed. Hell, if I remember correctly, SAKURAI HIMSELF CONFIRMED IT'S A NEW GAME ON TWITTER.

Look again. There are some significant differences that signify a calculated change.

Switch:
Super-Smash-Bros-Switch-Logo.jpg

Wii U/3DS
latest

Even looking past the obvious color and flair differenes, there are some things worth pointing out here. Most obvious is the cross through the bottom of Smash intersecting with the line going down through the S and A, that's never been a part of any Smash Bros logo. Second, look at the smash logo used for the O. on the Wii U and 3DS it was slanted, here on the Switch it's not slanted and perfectly circular. And finally look at the sizing of the letters. Note how on the Wii U version, the M in 'Smash' is occupying a fair amount of space below the S in 'Super' from the word above. While in the Switch logo, the letter 'M' doesn't occur anywhere directly below the letter S in 'Smash'. There are clearly some notable differences here.
You're starting to sound like MatPat, I'll superglue my tinfoil hat.

People claiming that it's a new game altogether just because of the BotW Link...
You poor naive creatures of hype. XD

Are you forgetting they added new characters for Mario Kart 8 DX, Pokken DX and also for Hyrule Warriors DE?
And they added BotW Link to Hyrule Warriors too, is Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition a new game just because they added BotW Link?

They could very well just have ported the Wii U version and added a few new characters to the mix to make it nor such a shameless port, as what they did with previous DX ports.
The fact that both BotW Link and Splatoon characters were added doesn't mean specifically that it is an entirely new game.
Hell, BotW Link might even just be a new skin xD
But being Nintendo it would be better if they add him as a separate character.

Also, the point about the Copyright goes completely null when you check out Mario Kart 8 Deluxe backcover:
616663_back.jpg
Check above the serial number, it clearly says ©2017 and not ©2015-2017.

You guys REALLY need to ease up on the hype just because they show a couple new characters.
Every port of a previous Nintendo IP made from the Wii U to the Switch has added a couple characters at least.

Don't get your hopes up.

Why didn't they show gameplay then?
That's easy, marketing strategy.
In each Direct people spam the chat endlessly claiming for Smash for the Switch, and what better way to create hype than to just tease it and let people speculate. Creates more clicks and news about it thanks to the speculations, which also widens the amount of people that will get to know about the product.

Don't get me wrong, if it ends up being a new game altogether, good for you all, but seeing how little time there has been since Sm4sh on Wii U/3DS and the Switch release, we are talking perhaps 2-3 years tops, and a Smash game development usually goes from 5 years and up.
Just don't get your hopes up as much, that's all.

I personally don't give a shit about Smash, but I can see why the hype is all about.
... And I thought I was pessimistic. The signs are there, you're just choosing to ignore em. It's CLEARLY a Melee remaster with the Sm4sh characters.

What signs?
The logo? XD
The logo even has the same font as the one on Wii U / 3DS.
I'm not sure what other signs I'm "ignoring"

I was serious about the pessimism, that's for sure.
Nah, I'm just down to earth.
Besides, having low expectations is better if it ends up turning otherwise.
Still though, I don't care about the franchise, so I have nothing to be hyped about, just pointing out what I can see others claims as "fact".

the biggest reason for your mentioned changes are the missing outlines of the current logo. but still, speculating based on the logo is stupid anyway cause its not even the final one

No, the outlines don't explain a circle smash ball logo instead of slanted, nor do they explain how the letter M itself (not its outline) occurs or not directly below the letter S, and finally it doesn't explain the never before seen cross in the name. The outlines literally explain none of what I said, that M and A aren't going to move when they have outlines, else it would mess up the Cross intersection within the logo they've now added.

The exact moment the smash logo was shown in the inkling's eye, I'm pretty sure the earth cracked, which is probably why the logo was on fire. Its foreshadowing how the world will end once we get our hands on the game, with Nintendo all-stars watching over us. Come at me Illuminati squad.

All I care about is Smash on the Switch. I also sincerely doubt that they'd just add BotW Link and the Inklings to Sm4sh. There are definitely a few rather strong hints that it's a new game. Mario Kart 8D makes sense, as there's really not a whole lot they could have added to a new Mario Kart at the time. I mean, half the tracks were already from older games. So, I can't see that being a valid argument.

Hell, people thought Spla2n was going to be a DX port. It wasn't. So, take it how you want.

you mean the same font that they used for the logo in Brawl? That argument carries no weight one way or the other. It would make sense that this game would have the same font if it were a port or a brand new entry.

I don't own a Switch and I never played Smash Bros (No Joke)

But I've been waiting for Smash on Switch hopefully it has a story mode
and Son Goku....

You'd have to get Smash 4 on Wii U and through softmodding, Goku can go over Ryu. I haven't used that hack in months, so I don't know if it's been improved, but it's stiff. It's Ryu's controls, and to me he's a sack of weight and I don't deal well with those.

I'm curious about Masahiro Sakurai. I remember years ago there was a rumor, or something where after the Smash 4 DLC, he wouldn't develop anymore Smash titles. He's got a lot on his plate now, again. The news of this Smash game had an impact on me I think I just woke up from a dream where I was using a GC controller, but it wasn't for Smash, and I think I was playing Wii U. I was thinking in my head in the dream that I should try Bayonetta with the GC controller.
