Hacking How is the state of using the PS Vita as an emulation machine nowadays? (especially compared to PSP)

Hey guys,

I am thinking about getting a 3.60 Vita and I know all about Henkaku, Adrenaline and what not.

I was wondering, how does the Vita with its native exploit handle the consoles PSP was sometimes struggeling with in terms of framerate (SNES for example). Is it better (I'd hope so considering it's far more powerful)? The same? Maybe even worse due to the smaller scene?

I really haven't found any up to date info so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks

About SNES emulation, is much better, and i find it much better than PSP.
But generally speaking, not much difference about the two hardware right now in terms of emulation.

Depends on your playstyle too; if you use much stuff during play, like savestate, rewind, fastforward so Vita is far way superior to PSP (especially because these emulator stuff work also on PSX retroarch core, except for rewind)

Anyway, i found personally - analog stick apart - PSP is much comfortable to use to play than Vita, especially D-Pad.

I have tried some psx games on vita and psp. The same converted titles I was able to play on psp I can't on Vita. In my opinion it was that because you can't switch pops version on Vita..

Generally speaking, SNES emulation is better, GBA emulation is slightly better, and that's about it. If Retroarch is still working on the N64 emu port, that would also be a tad better than the PSP port, with more games playable.

PS1 stuff is mostly identical to the PSP, but because POPS can't be changed there are some games that have issues. PSP games work the same as a PSP.

You guys are really helpful, thanks. How about some more "obscure" stuff like Tgfx-16/PC-Engine, especially the CD games and Sega Master System (although I doubt there are issues with that one)?

I am pretty much looking to replace my old PSP since I am also interested in Vita games and if the Vita can do some things even better (bar some PS1 games) than the PSP then I'd be absolutely happy.

Also, should I use Retroarch as the emulator then or should I go with standalone ports of some other emulators?

Retroarch is the most up-to-date collection of emulators, so that would be your best bet for older consoles. AFAIK, TGFX/PC-Engine stuff works great using Mednafen, and Master System (AKA Genesis) works well, too using Genesis+GX.

PS1/PSP should, of course, go through Adrenaline (which is the PSP eCFW).

No. A hardware accelerated OpenGL library is being worked on by Rinnegatamante, which could in theory be used for hardware accelerated N64 emulation by the Libretro team, but so far nobody has said their working on it.
I wouldn't give hopes to people about that openGL library. It is stated that a N64 emulator should use GXM directly.

Using GXM directly would be a much, much better solution, yes, since it would allow for more direct access to the GPU. It's the absolute best case scenario, but unfortunately because of the state of N64 emulation development, it would take much, much longer to implement because an entire plugin would have to be created to actually take advantage of GXM which would require someone relatively fluent in the library...which not a lot of people are, mainly because it's a relatively complex library.

With the OpenGL wrapper, on the other hand, we would at least see some hardware acceleration (since we already have a billion and a half OpenGL plugins for N64 emulation) which would vastly improve the current Libretro port (since it only uses software rendering and barely gets 1FPS :P). I absolutely don't think it would be perfect compatibility, of course, nor would most games run full speed, but I would expect it to at least out perform the DaedalusX64 port on the PSP for the most part.

You test it :0

If just for pure emulation, you'll be good with a GPDXD seriously (installing the legacy rom on it of course).
I'm playing san andreas right now on it and all kind of emulators thanks to retroarch.
Compared to a psvita, the psp emulation is slower (depending on the game). For the rest, it's far far better. minus the psvita original games.

I may be a bit of topic, sorry :) I'm just totally in love with the gpd that replace my beloved psvita.
