Hey everyone,

As the title indicates I purchased a Wii over 10 years ago and soon after I got a mod chip installed, no idea what chip. Back then I used to have many "backed up" games on DVD that worked perfectly. Just recently I dug up my Wii from the basement which hasn't been used in at least 7-8 years, and decided to hook it up for my kids to use. The games I had back then have been thrown out, so in the past couple of days I found ways to get my hands on some "backed up" games on DVD. So far a couple games work fine like Mark Kart and Mario Party 8. However I have some games which only load up in the home screen, but once I try to open the game all I get is black screen, and it just sits there. I have some games at the home screen ask for updates to be installed, but it also warns me that if I have any mods installed some games will cease to work.

1) Can I install the updates?
2) How can I get the games with the "black screen" to work? These games were burned at 2x speed.
3) What are some educational/learning games you'd recommend for a 2 and 4 year old?

Thanks in advance!

I doubt it. I don't believe I ever installed anything ever. My home screen is pretty empty with the defaults I believe.

The posts mentions starting from stock, incomplete soft mod an old soft mod....no mention of hard modded. Does it make a difference?

I'm still safe to proceed?

More than likely the black screen games are due to them being PAL if your in NTSC land or the reverse. Install the homebrew channel and one of the launchers and set it to force region you should be able to play them fine then.

Once your doing homebrew channel you should look into getting an external hard drive of some sorts, the loading speed is crazy faster :) Plus you can just have a list of games and pick one out and go no need to worry about scratched/lost/broken disks.

Okay but I made sure to download on games that were NTSC, but I guess they could very well be PAL.

I'll definitely look into the external hard drive once I get this modded and up to date.

Also your chip is more than likely a Wiikey or a clone and if it's a clone it can be updated with the Wiikey firmware just fine. (I still have like 5 of the buggers I got on a kick ass sale)

https://archive.org/details/WiiKeyUpdate1.99BETAUSAVersion You could burn this to a disk and see if it updates, if you have some other chip it will just say "You can't do that!!!" no harm no foul.

Now that you mention WiiKey it brings back memories. I think it's what I have.

Grab modmii, run its main wizard function, answer the questions as if nothing has been nodded on your wii before, follow the auto generated guide

Set mii up is basically a knock off of ModMii but from what I've read it isn't bad. Feel free to use it but I can't give advice on it. It's weird because it needs ModMii to even work so kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion.

Wow I'm so confused....

On one hand I want to just want to try whatever is recommended, but then I don't want a crying 2 and 4 year old asking why they can't play Mario Kart and Mario Party 8 which are the only 2 games which currently work.

Just get modmii installed and homebrew channel installed. From there on you should be free to do what you want, like usb backup loaders/emulators/custom channels/etc.

Okay so I just bought a SD card and I'm going to follow the many tutorials I've found on youtube to install the homebrew channel via LetterBomb. From all of the tutorials I've watched they just install the Homebrew Channel. I see an option to install BootMii but the tutorials just skip over it. What exactly is BootMii and is it required? Should I install that as well?

BootMii is a tool for backing up and restoring the wii NAND.

Useful in case if something goes wrong. But not technically required.

Thanks but I can't even get the Homebrew channel installed. I'm using the Letterbomb method on a 16GB SDHC. I know it's a large size but I don't have anything smaller. I even created a 2GB partition and copied the files to it but I can't get past the "scam" message. The press 1 option never appears :(

Is there another way for me to install the homebrew channell on a 4.3u?

Not required, but you should install bootmii. On older Wii consoles you have the possibility to install bootmii into boot2 which gives you almost perfect protection. If your Wii is really that old the chances are good. The HackMii installer will tell you if it is possible, but even if installation into boot2 is impossible you can at least install it as an IOS (which is useful in conjunction with Priiloader).

So in short: Install bootmii and Priiloader to protect your Wii. There are a lot of threads here like this:

“I did… now my Wii does not work anymore.”
“Do you habe Priiloader and/or bootmii (boot2) installed?”
“No.”
“Your out of luck. Get another Wii, they are cheap.”

Did you wait some minutes?
