Gal Gun 2 denied classification in Germany

galgun2-characters2.png

The lusty school-girl hunting rail "shooter" Gal Gun 2 has been denied age classification by the USK in Germany ultimately preventing its retail release in the country.

In the controversial sequel to the original 2015 Gal Gun: Double Peace (which was also banned in New Zealand but strangely not in Germany), you take the role of a Japanese school boy who becomes the unwavering object of attraction for swarms of daemon-possessed school-girls who you must fend off with your pheromone arrows, putting them in a state of dazed euphoria.

Published PQube commented on the ban:

PQube said:
Today we have received word that Gal*Gun 2 has been refused classification in Germany.

We’ll always try to get games through classification regardless of the possibility of it being denied, as we feel that everyone should have the right and the access to play the games they want to play. It is our opinion that disliking the content in a piece of entertainment or art, and voicing that dislike, is totally fine and even encouraged, but denying that work the right to exist in a market based on personal opinions and prejudices, is something we strongly disagree with.

Unfortunately our appeal against this decision has been unsuccessful. Given that Gal*Gun: Double Peace did receive classification in Germany, we’re doubly disappointed that we cannot bring the highly-anticipated title to our fans in Germany. However, we will have to accept and respect the decision of the USK.

Gal Gun 2 releases on PS4 and Switch on March 15th in Japan and April 27th in Europe and North America.

UPDATE: This discussion has garnered a lot of discussion regarding censorship in Germany and GBAtemp resident member @Uwabami has made a clear and consise post that looks to address some misinformation being thrown around. If you are interested in German censorship I recommend taking the time to read their post on the subject! Thanks @Uwabami !

Daemon-possessed high school girls? So does that mean this game is about Linux or something?

But, no, seriously, while this game seems rather distasteful, banning it outright seems silly. Germany's censorship policies are ridiculous.

Well that's not good. These games are really harmless. Since I'm kind of liberal since it's just cartoons, I don't give two cents. Then again I'm not as impressionable as teens that these games aim at.
It's a game about non-consentually coercing schoolgirls into letting you touch them inappropriately

Do some research before you make any claims.

Hitler looks so strange when he's clean shaved.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh! I just realized what game this was! I remember someone streaming it, it was so funny because of how ridiculous it is! Wow, what a shame, it was ridiculous in a good way too. Germany hates waifus :(

I'm all for being against censorship, but this game is just weird and entirely unneeded. The fact that it, of all games, manages to get a sequel, is just...eugh.
Don't forget Senran Kagura. We all know the gameplay isn't why people buy it.. Except for the Switch game..........

Gal*Gun (PS3,XB360) [360 version censored]
Gal*Gun Double Peace (PC,PS4,PSV) [all uncensored]
Gal*Gun VR (PC) [uncensored]

yes it even managed to get a VR release

You don't watch Hentai I assume, because this is Hentai territory if you replace the rail gun aspect with banging the women. Even keeping the guns, then it's just an ecchi. I feel like I've seen a Hentai like this but the annoying thing about the genre is that I can't remember a lot of the titles. I'd enter into series nowadays and sometimes they end up being replays, but it's not like I want to change my mind (high replay value).

They tend to be alot more reluctant about things like that since the New Year's Eve thing in Cologne.
I doub banning this trash will change anything, but... that's how they behave now and I doub enough people will raise there voice for a game like that.
As for the Nazi thing interestingly the USK changed there guide lines in 2014 and since then even they accept computer games as art which means it should be possible to have swastikas and nazis in computer games (art, research and teaching enjoy special freedoms including the use of nazi symbols). The problem is that someone has to try to publish a game like Wolfenstein uncensored and beeing ready to take it to a court if the USK denies them a USK-18 rating. Obviously the lawers of most publishers will continue to advice the studios just to make a censored version for Germany instead of having a long court case during which the game most likely is banned.
There was a small to medium discussion even picked-up by the online version of major newspapers (mainly the left leant papers ) here if censoring a anti-fascists game such as Wolfenstein 2 isn't more trivialiseing the topic then anything else. E.g. the mother of the person you play (B.J. Blazkowicz) isn't a jew who died in a KZ anymore, but a Pole who died "in imprisonment".
Some left leant people think that censoring should be called historical revisionism. A harsh critic since the intension of the game was beeing anti-fascist, yet I see there point. If you take all references to the holocaus out of a game that clearly is about nazis ("the regime" lead by a person called "Heiler"... You haven't to be a genius to understand that reference especialy if the colours red-white-black are still the same on the flags and just the symbole was changed) it gives a odd feeling about the censoring .

Thanks for the expansion. Germany is an interesting case in all this but most of what I see is in German which I am not so great at reading.

I can understand why they did what they did in the aftermath but from where I sit it has been long enough and it would seem to trouble the whole free speech thing. To continue to censor even games clearly anti such things does lend some credence to the trivialising thing you mentioned.

Germany actually doesn't have a free speech clause in their constitution, or at least not in reference to Nazism and hate speech
