hqdefault.jpg

SEGA have announced that they will be attending SXSW 2018 and will be providing an exclusive look at what's next for Sonic after the success of Sonic Mania and the release of Sonic Forces.

Sonic is back, and ready to take 2018 by storm. Join the official team from SEGA who are building Sonic's future as they give you an update on last year's strong performance of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, as well as the world-exclusive first look at what comes next for the fastest blue hedgehog. Speakers include Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, Sonic PD Director Austin Keys, Sonic Mania Animation Director Tyson Hesse, and Sonic Social Media Manager Aaron Webber. You won't want to miss this!

With the previous announcement of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie (now delayed until 2019) will this be the first peak at Sonic's foray into Hollywood or will we get a look at the next Sonic game? Will the rumoured Sonic Mania "Project Plus" turn out to be something substantial, perhaps an enhanced release with new content and finished zone transitions? Perhaps a retail release?

Let us know your thoughts below and stay tuned to GBAtemp for coverage of the event as @Chary will be attending at SXSW 2018.

Yeah, welcome to boost-style gameplay. The game *does* consist of holding forward and occasionally pushing a button, but you most certainly can be either good or bad at it. The fact that you finished a stage doesn't mean that it was easy if you missed half of the pick ups. Forces is short because it's all about repeat gameplay, finding loadouts that work well on the stage, fighting against the clock and collecting all of the special rings. There's 2D sections for players who don't know how to go fast - I do, and I like it. Some of the missions are particularly difficult and require extensive map knowledge, Classic Sonic Ghost Town under 60 seconds comes to mind. It took me an hour or two before I found the perfect path and nailed the time, so anyone who claims that the game is just "press right to win" did just that - walked to the end and watched the outro. To me the game's all about getting those sweet S Ranks, finishing missions and unlocking more and more threads for my avatar, that's all it was meant to be and it's doing that just fine.
Thank you, that was a more thorough in depth description of why you like the game than most people manage to bother explaining. Though most of my concern is the use of the games that they keep making is based on sonic unleashed back in 2008. Sonic colors, Sonic generations, and this game all seem to be based on that game with some new improvements to variety and gimmicks, wonder if is becoming a good thing or bad thing. Then again, since most 2D sonic is similar, is hard to compare but 3D sonic games didn't used to be the way it is now when it started.

Sonic adventure had a game with multiple characters, and tried to feel like a adventure with a hub map and story to balance things, the next game had removed the Hub map system and added newer characters that was basically clones of existing ones that they play exactly the same but with each of them having different stages but with same goal. Sonic Heroes had even more characters, added a team based gameplay gimmick system but was playing much like the "Go forward, stop and figure out this new stage gimmick to advance" format. As it kept going forward, it wasn't until sonic unleashed came out when they just stuck with that format.

I think the games using that format isn't terrible, just I kinda miss some of the older stuff, having that HUB Map like in adventure mode in sonic adventure felt kinda like metroid where you find upgrades to progress or give player new ways to play through the stages to explore new paths and find faster ways to finish it, grinding rails is never challenging like it was in sonic adventure 2 where you had to actually balance to keep your speed up or just not fall off, not just hold boost, and doesn't have various game modes or mini games like the chao garden, not even two player modes, cause the only characters you play with is sonic. It doesn't have the different characters that can complete the stages differently that gives you a reason to replay the stages again and explore.

The only incentive to replay stages is to complete missions for a S rank, faster times on a online leaderboard and more unlockable miscellaneous stuff that may not be directly related to gameplay like gallery artwork, music, and cosmetics. There is no bonus stages either. You hardly even focus on collecting Chaos Emeralds that rewards you with playing with super sonic when replaying any stage after getting them, the only time you use super sonic is just one stage for the ending of the game. I guess there is plenty of people who prefer the modern sonic stuff and that is okay, is good stuff. But I just wonder if they ever will revisit those kinds of things again like they did with sonic mania. :)

I hope their presentation is of the same amazing caliber as the last one. Audio issues, some horrible djs, sad dancing sonic being dragged on stage, more audio issues, starting like an hour after the start time, trailers with no sound so they run it again, and let us never forget Totinos stuffed nachos!

I played Forces for 3 hours straight last week and by the end of that time, I was burnt out. Simply put, it looks good, but it's junk. Sonic Team need to rethink what makes a Sonic game fun to play and go back to the drawing board. Try and even out the past paced sections with conventional platforming and bonus rounds. I'd even love a game where Sonic visits all of his old games in their native graphical styles. But this on the rails, plays by itself crap is getting tedious.

I've been a fan of Sonic since Day 1 and I see a place for both gameplay styles. The emerald collectathon works well for side-scrollers and definitely belongs in the 2D installments, in 3D I much prefer the story-oriented Adventure style. You'll be happy (or unhappy) to know that there is no Super Sonic in the base Sonic Forces, or even any mention of the Chaos Emeralds. The game revolves around the Phantom Ruby and, in a sense, ties in with Mania. You can download Super Sonic to mess about in the stages, but it's just silly DLC. It's still free to download, so grab him while you can since eventually it'll go on sale for like a buck or two, much to the autistic uproar of the "fans", even though it adds nothing to the experience beside goofing around and glitching maps that clearly weren't intended for him.

There is also a free download for a "sanic" t-shirt. Now memes are part of the game, and as DLC no less. :wtf:

I didn't know this game had dlc, but for $40 maybe I shouldn't be surprised maybe.

Hopefully SEGA will keep Christian Whitehead and Headcannon around for a few more games, given Sonic Mania's success. Maybe, just maybe, they'll be the ones to break the Sonic cycle for good.

I don't think that free, non-essential DLC is a detriment to the game, it's bonus content.
Well I mean the game is $40 with free dlc. Kinda wonder why is not $60 like Sonic Generations was, thought that game had no dlc. Not sure if they reduced the price to compensate for the reduced content or not. Is a interesting choice for price and content for this game. $40 + free dlc regardless of the kind of DLC, doesn't make much sense to me.

Guess I'll find the game somewhere in stores and give it a try. I hope the next sonic game with a story has more humor in it, or just renew sonic boom for season 3 on tv. :P

You know what SEGA should take by storm?

Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, Alex Kidd.

You know, not worn franchises?

But I guess if people keep buying Sonic no matter how crappy it got I guess that's just what they will release on a yearly basis.
