GitHub is removing support for TLSv1/1.1, and the 3DS does not support anything past this version. This was announced Feb 27, 2017, and is going into effect tomorrow.

Homebrews affected include:
  • Luma3DS Updater
  • Certain MultiUpdater configs
  • All others that depend on GitHub to download things
Announcement made last year:

https://githubengineering.com/crypto-deprecation-notice/

UPDATE:

One of the Github developers said the following quote:

Just a quick preview...we will be posting a blog post tomorrow morning with an update. Because of the delayed final blog post, we are delaying things by one week. The plan is to do a 1hr brownout on February 8th, followed by a permanent deployment on February 22nd. We realize that no matter how much notice (announced roughly a year ago), there are bound to be some systems that are both incompatible and unknowingly running on production systems. So, the hope is that a 1hr brownout will help to unearth such systems and give folks time to get them updated.

In short, it's delayed until February 22.

LOL, is that why I'm getting SSL errors with Cydia on my iPhone? It's only the github repos.

Super noob question: couldn't it be possible to embed support for newer versions of TLS inside the homebrew applications themselves?

So it is impossible for homebrew apps to handle SSL/TLS themselves? Looks like a custom http:c and/or ssl:c system module is the only way.
it is possible for homebrew applications to embed mbedtls/openssl/libressl/etc and do ssl/tls verification without the ssl module. but a custom ssl module may also happen.

@delete12345 it's been delayed to February 22nd.

Will update in regards to the delay.

Also, you need to fix the op to say January 27th instead of February 27th.
