Article's original title: The Xbox One has a serious exclusive games problem

I could not find any threads being mentioned in the News & Featured Content section on GBATemp. Given that this article came out today, it's fairly recent.

The most important section of the entire article:

ACQUISITION RUMORS

Some of the names being thrown around as possible acquisitions by Microsoft are, frankly, astounding, even unthinkable. But the fact that they are doing the rounds is instructive. The most recent one we heard (from a reliable source close to Microsoft) was, in fact, Electronic Arts. We also heard a whisper about Valve and about Korean outfit PUBG Corp., which Microsoft last year signed to a timed exclusive for its hit survival shooter, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

“Because of where we are in the lifecycle of all these things, I’m expecting to hear Microsoft announce something very, very shortly,” said van Dreunen.

Another reason for optimism about an acquisition comes from internal shifts within Microsoft. Spencer was promoted in the fall to executive vice president, gaming, where he has a much bigger say over how video games fit into the company’s overall strategy.

“He came on at a time when the Xbox One was in a bad position,” said Cole. “I think he’s made the best of a bad situation. The overall strong position of the company is positive because it gives the room to invest in gaming.”

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is more enthusiastic about games and Xbox than his predecessor, Steve Ballmer, greenlighting the $2.5 billion purchase of Minecraftdeveloper Mojang as one of his first major acquisitions in 2014.

So, it looks like the rumor mill is going about how Microsoft may tap into their reserves and buy Electronic Arts. This will dramatically change the video game industry, and perhaps even put EA titles onto Xbox Game Pass through its exclusivity subscription options and such.

We'll see how it goes.

I would love it if EA games come to game pass on day 1 as well. This way anthem, battlefield and the sports games can be played with the subscription

Hmm, that'd be a real shame :creep:

But I loved imagining this to happen:

Me needing to pee after chugging coffee and water while listening to DragonForce is more urgent than this. Meh, they'll still be EA, I'd be more fooled if the acquisition happens and they get a rebranding to the point of a name change. The idea of getting more exclusive titles with this acquisition, I get that, but ugh, EA.

That... actually is a good idea. They can shut down EA and auction off the IP of all the dead games or rehire the old developers.

Well Rare made star fox adventures before getting bought by Microsoft, I think it is just rare not liking to make sequels for some reason.

Starfox Adventures wasn't even that bad...? They were trying something new. When Microsoft bought out Rare, they cancelled Conkers Bad Fur Day 2... They killed ANY hopes of us seeing a true sequel to a lot of our treasured games. Microsoft sat on a potential goldmine and did nothing beneficial with it.

huh, I didn't know conker bad fur day 2 was a thing. you are right though. they are sitting on a mine and they are not doing anything with it. Hopefully that changes if the perfect dark rumors are true

...because of Microsoft...

So why or how would selling Rare be good or make it better? All the devs left and the only good thing to get would be their IPs, nothing else.

False, Nintendo owns the entirety of the Star Fox Adventures IP. Why do you think Krystal was in Super Smash Bros. The only IPs MS owns are Jet Force Gemini, Kameo, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct and a Conker's Bad Fur Day. SFA is owned by Nintendo in its entirety. At least try to cite a source on that.

Get the band back together so to speak. Plus the name sounds better with the IPs.

Not easy, many moved on, I don't blame them.

Should definitely be a package deal. Not to mention a lot of the devs that "left" either retired/left development all together or pursued different career paths. To hand a single IP to the highest bidder wouldn't necessarily go over well.

I do not want to defend or attack Microsoft for rare because I feel there are different sides of the story in this case. All I know is that I hope they do the killer instinct route of offshoring their games to second party developers. I could care less if rare develops another banjo kazooie if someone else who is a good developer does it.
