Once again, researchers have found there is no substantial evidence to support the claim that violent video games make players violent.

In a series of experiments, with more than 3,000 participants, the team demonstrated that video game concepts do not ‘prime’ players to behave in certain ways and that increasing the realism of violent video games does not necessarily increase aggression in game players.

The dominant model of learning in games is built on the idea that exposing players to concepts, such as violence in a game, makes those concepts easier to use in ‘real life’. This is known as ‘priming’, and is thought to lead to changes in behaviour. Previous experiments on this effect, however, have so far provided mixed conclusions.

Researchers at the University of York expanded the number of participants in experiments, compared to studies that had gone before it, and compared different types of gaming realism to explore whether more conclusive evidence could be found.

I think there is a small link. I think it can have some kind of small effect but overall people telling you who playing black-ops will make you become a mass shooter dont know what there talking about.

This is ancient news to be honest. Video games don't make people more violent irl, if anything, they let people get brutal in the game and let all their anger and frustration out, making them more calm, relaxed and focused irl. Anyone who understands that a game is just that, a game, knows the difference and doesn't experience changes in behavior! And let's not forget all the important things games do, like improve reaction times, reflexes, visual ability and so on!

Isn't their research that shows there is actually a small dip in crimes when violent video games or movies comes out?

Could be that people can express a much darker side to their selves in another media.

Anyways, there have been multiple studies that confirm this, so nothing really new or exciting with this particular study, just additional confirmation. Doesn't matter to all the naysayers anyways who just ignore scientific evidence regardless.[/QUOTE]

This is probably the truest and saddest thing about all of this :(

I can see where this is going...

Gamers: Yes! ONCE AGAIN: more piece of evidence that we're not becoming more violent by actively participating in virtual violence! :D
Soccer moms: google...does playing violent video games make you more violent?
Google: replies

these studies aside (easy to say i know):

how can lots exposure to, or getting used to, violence in games not change the behavior?
i remember when i was young, people would pretend to be power rangers, and the so called 'fighting' that goes with that.
if instead of power rangers, it was some guy with a massive gun or sword, i'm sure we would have been pretending to play with that gun or sword instead.
it's a well known fact that our surroundings influence us, from advertising, to bad family situations, if we get 'spoiled' by our parents or not, good or bad school teachers, etc
it is natural that children copy, from our language to our actions.

i remember when i was playing house of the dead for ps3, if you play with someone who has hardly played games before, and seen someone's head blow up, it's nasty for them and a shock.
but keep playing it and it becomes normal.
when games were just on stuff like gameboy, yeah it's much less real.
but now with 3d, hd, vr, heck even surround sound, it really does make it much more real.

i'm not saying that because your behavior has changed to normalize violence, we are more likely to commit acts of violence but, it can't be a good thing to get accustomed to violence, right?
and how can it not be true, that if you are accustomed to violence, that it is easier to hurt someone. for example, soldiers.

Back in the day, when a very crude early filmed piece of a locomotive coming towards the screen was shown, the audience got hysterical, jumping out of their chairs, running for their lifes.

Afterwards they got used to it, and that stopped happening. Nonetheless, people are not stupid and they will run the fuck away from an actual train (unless they wanted to commit suicide).

I guess people are able to tell apart fiction from reality, who would have told?
It is only matter of experimenting the trick once or twice, you know they say "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me", people usually learn, they are not idiots. Even with the most advanced filming and projection methods people can still tell apart an actual train from a fictional one (after they were tricked the first time at least).

Wait... what was I speaking about?
Oh, humans are not idiots. They know well and tell apart fiction from reality, unless they have some unrelated mental disorder.

Yes but virtually everything affects us, like commercials on tv. Subliminal messages etc (they are real to a point). Just because something affects us doesn't mean we are stupid.
