IIRC Sony already confirmed there won't be a Vita successor. I don't know about Microsoft, though.
Yeah but they will make a portable console at some point because they can't ignore Nintendo success. also its the future i think portability is the future of consoles.. not graphical power because its already so good and people are going to get tired of graphics only being the upgrade. I've always wanted a powerful portable console. Things are getting smaller and more powerful so some day pcs will be the size of the switch and graphic cards will be so small.

Sony has zero reasons to fight Nintendo in their own turf, because they know it's a lost cause. There's no room for competition in the handheld market in Japan, be it hybrids or mobile.

Sony won't get into the handheld market anytime soon (and I'm really happy about it -most "games" are s**t-, as they screwed badly with the Vita outside Japan's market).
Anyway they might try to create a system that somehow resemble the Switch, and they might call it whatever trying to make it look like something innovative and new on the market (as with the PS Move -piece of junk-, being a wannabe competitor to the WiiMote).
And I don't think they'll create a hybrid, as the want to have more control over their users.

With Microsoft, and considering their designs, we might see a microwave oven alike console trying to be a hybrid console.

Signs point to no. Both Sony and Microsoft are competing over console power, and Switching to portable would require an extremely expensive console to even come close to the performance that they claim is in such high demand. Such a sudden reversal in rhetoric would be unexpected and make marketing much more difficult.

I don't think either developer is in a position. Sony has vocally declared that they are dismissing the portable market, and Microsoft has never had a part of it. Of the two Sony could throw together something quickly but they may never get developer attention, while Microsoft might eventually find a way to work it into it's ecosystem, but they are currently preoccupied with developing Windows on Arm and the process of focusing their entire attention to a single product with multiple uses.

Definitely not in this generation or the next. Sony already bowed out and Microsoft has plenty of portable devices they sell already. They probably don't want their gaming division competing with tablets and laptops.

That's not true at all. The PSP held up quite well. Sony just got cocky with the Vita.

Despite the sales success of the Switch, there really aren't many good games for it. There's maybe 4 if you go by pure exclusives & don't include upgraded games like Mario Kart. Sony has the library, so there's no need for them to compete with N on a hardware level. Possibly MS will try something because both their hardware & software are severely lacking.

The PSP came out 10 years ago, things changed since then.
Yeah, and Nintendo had their own failed console as well. They learned from it. If Sony learned from their mistakes they'd be able to compete.

yes but at some point there will be no need for the consoles to be as big as they are as mobile processors get more powerful. But it looks far away nintendo are doing it pretty early and you see there are problems such as flash memory being expensive and it not being big enough to fit a harddrive its also notas strong as ps4 and xbox one.

Mobile is never gonna be 1:1 power with full-fat hardware, but at some point hybrids/portables will take over, you're correct. More than power, battery capacity is the biggest barrier right now. Just try playing some modern games at 1440p on a laptop and watch how fast the battery drains. And that's a much bigger battery than what's in Switch.

the switch got game of the year and its selling alot and sony said they can't ignore nintendo so i can see them trying to copy it.
Sony only recently stated they won't be making another portable. They could mean a lot of things when they say they "can't ignore" Nintendo. Could even (hopefully) mean some Sony software sales on Switch if it continues to perform. The pessimist in me thinks it only means pushing their own mobile "solutions" more. Streaming and gamepass service, etc.
