I fell in love with my old 3DS again (after flashing it with CFW), but now I find myself desiring a new 2DS XL for the bigger screen size and faster performance. Still not sure it's worth it, but I'll probably buy it on sale next week.

This time I will have to flash with R4i Gold 3DS Plus to flash my firmware this time. It sounds simple enough, even though I'll have to find/use a magnet and open the cartridge to flip the switch after.

Here's my question, after flashing it with CFW, can I just swap in the same SD card I was using in my Old 3DS? I'd like to not have to go through the painstaking process of re-downloading all the freeshop games, etc.
I imagine this way my save files get backed up and moved over too.

Also, if I plan to give my old 3DS to my co-worker for his kid, can I just make a backup of my SD card to leave CFW working and all the games? How would I make sure to scrub my personal info from the system or SD card? I have a few legit purchases on there pre-CFW that will probably be attached to my Nintendo ID. Do I just delete them and that's it?

I wonder if you might have to reinstall the games because when I try to install minecraft it says it cannot create a ticket something like 0x000-and more numbers. Probably because of the software like the new 3ds uses compared to the o3ds/2ds.

Installed games are encrypted per console so you can't just change over SD cards. You have to do a system transfer.

Since you want to install CFW on the New 2DS XL I would suggest doing DSiWare hax since a system transfer is part of the process. Then you just have to run tikShop afterward for all your games to show up.

https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(dsiware-game-injection)

You can remove your info by going into 3DS profile and changing the name and such. Your credit card information (if saved) should move to the New 2DS XL along with the NNID but probably double check by going into the eShop afterward. If you have trouble, follow the troubleshooting section called removing an NNID without formatting https://3ds.guide/troubleshooting

Make sure to follow all parts of the guide, especially backing up your old 3DS and restoring at the right time.

Thank you very much for that response. I will follow the DSiWare Injection guide. I don't already own one of those games, can I purchase them in the eShop with my CFW old3DS or should I do it with my stock 2DS XL when it arrives (before I flash it)?

What confuses me is how to hand over my old 3ds to a friend, if I use the GodMode9 steps to delete the NNID from the device, will that be sufficient and can it stay running in its current state? I hope it would delete the games I bought and leave the rest from the free shop, but can it run without a NNID? Can they create their own NNID and just associate it with that? I'd prefer to not have to reformat the old 3DS if it can be avoided, but I don't understand if Nintendo prevents you from having your NNID registered to two devices.

Your NNID will already be moved to the console you transfer to. Injecting a black nnidsave.bin just prevents the console being confused. Because when you restore it, it will think it has an NNID but the servers know it doesn't so you'll get error messages. The games you bought will disappear after visiting the eShop after restoring, but they will come back if you use tikShop (assuming they are titles that are in the database).

Hey is it okay if I don't get prompted with the "Move Dsiware" message on my source 3ds? I have purchased the game so its legit, it was art academy second semester, and after doing every step in Section 2 of this guide: https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(dsiware-game-injection), in the system setttings when looking at the dsiware I have installed it no longer shows art academy anymore it shows sudoku instead (I know I injected sudoku in it for the hax but I thought it would still show the dsiware as art academy), is this how its suposed to be? I just dont want to go through with the system transfer and end up fucking up everything

Is the transfer finished? Do you have the game available to use on the target?

Did the transfer complete? If it did this is what to do:
  • Restore the backup to the source console
  • Go into System Settings -> Data Management -> DSiWare
  • Choose to move the game to SD card
  • Put this SD card in the target console
  • Go to System Settings -> Data Management -> DSiWare
  • Move the game from SD to system memory
It should work now. Troubleshooting:
If the game isn't available on the source, redownload it from the eShop and do the steps again to inject it
If the game can't be moved from SD to system memory on the target, the your transfer failed or you formatted the target after the transfer, and you'll have to buy the game again (unless the transfer didn't happen at all and the source still owns it) and do the transfer again.

Now, say, what if one wants to go from a n3ds xl to n2dsxl? Could one just a ctr nand transfer and transfer all the installed content(without transfer any bans, of course)? Or would the painstaking process be the exact same (I have a 128GB sd card that's probably about 75% full)?

Do a system transfer? I'm not sure what exactly a CTR transfer will transfer. In the system transfer you will just move the SD card over so you don't have to worry about installing anything again.

I have the hyper ban on my n3ds xl and I'd rather not transfer that too, if I can.
