My 3DS is hacked with Cubic Ninja and launches via the "DS Profile" menu, so the hack is pretty old. I'll get round to updating it at some point. In the meantime, if I use the newest GW 31.4 Ultra firmware with a recent Emunand, can I play a real cartridge from there, like Pokemon Ultra Moon? I don't want to run the game in the real nand environment because it will want me to update it.

Cheers!

I haven't used my gateway for a while, but I don't think it works on the latest firmware. The last emunand I ran my gateway under was 11.2. It might have changed since I last checked, but if you update your emuand to the latest then it will just black screen when you launch it through the ds profile menu. (like it usually does when we have to wait for gateway to catch up)

If you want to play a legit card, but are afraid of losing your exploit, then you might as well update your exploits all together. It's much easier to do now that the methods have been tested so much.
I updated to A9LH from the gateway DS profile exploit myself, it's a lot less scarier now though and you will want to go straight to B9S and skip out a9lh all together.

You can keep your current emunand if you wish, that way you know your gateway card will still work on it. But after updating to B9S you can go ahead and update your real nand to the latest firmware and play your legit games without worrying about losing your ability to boot emunand (or just launch cia games from real nand).

I stopped using emunand a while back, so I can't be certain but I'm pretty sure an old 9.x emunand will still run on top of an updated 11.x nand. (my gateway 11.2 emu ran over 11.6 nand before I got rid of it)

Anyway look here for the guide that you should use to update to B9S, https://3ds.guide/get-started
Then you can go on to update your firmware and run legit cards on real nand, and boot your emunand for gateway if you so please.

(follow that guide exactly and it's easy, many people don't recommend looking for a YouTube guide at all, even if it follows this one. Just read through it and follow the steps)

Btw what console do you have and what firmware is it currently running?

Thank you both for your answers. I have an Australian New 3DS XL that's running 9.0.0-20E as real nand, and 10.6 GW emunand.

I kept a log of all the system changes I made, cos I figured I'd forget everything and come back to it all years later.

Got N3DS and Gateway
backup sysNAND 9.0
create emuNAND
backup emuNAND and full MicroSD card
format sysNAND
install timewarp to sysNAND
update emuNAND to 9.4
backup sysNAND
install NVRAM to sysNAND
install MSET EUR CIA to sysNAND
update Gateway Menu to 3.7.1 Beta
update EmuNAND to 10.6

I'm not sure what Timewarp, NVRAM and MSET EUR CIA were. I think the last one was for playing a blue (DS) Gateway card. I also have two backups which I've labeled "9.0 factory default" and "9.0 with new ID and timewarp", and I've noted what looks like a serial number. I seem to remember I knew what I was doing at the time. I'll read over the new guide carefully before I make any changes.

- Timewarp was a cia file of the DS whitelist before it was updated. This is the file was used to block DS flashcards that originally worked on the 3ds, but it would install the old whitelist before it blocked said cards.
(there was also a one people called the "browser timewarp" cia, but you likely mean the ds whitelist)

- NVRAM was the next level up for the DS profile entrypoint, it would "install" the entrypoint permanently if you did it right. So you could play ds games and it wouldn't reset the ds profile settings like it usually does.

- And MSET was the profile exploit, but it was for New3DS system. It was an older version of the system settings (which is what MSET is I believe) that you usually wouldn't get on the n3ds systems.

I'm just going off memory so forgive me if that isn't all correct, but that's my understanding of these things as I can recall it.

It's a surprising coincidence to here of someone with my exact same situation (since now there's a whole bunch of options for hax). I imported my n3ds from Australia as it uses the European region, and at the time, they were the only known English consoles to have 9.0 firmware out of the box. Having a gateway from day 1, I knew I had to have it available for my new system as I was giving away my original one after upgrading. And you listed almost the exact same stages for changing your system as I did. :yay3ds:

Oh and just make sure you leave your gateway well alone whilst you upgrade to b9s. I know gateway has it's own version, but I believe that's still only a9lh (the best, before b9s) and it also locks you into gateway's shit and basically screws your console. (you can use certain ds flashcards with ntrboothax to hack any firmware now, but it'll be easier to just avoid gw for the moment, at least on sysnand)
So don't try doing any gateway stuff while you're updating to b9s, and also don't try using it in sysnand either.
I'm no pro especially on how gateway should be used with current firmware, but I do know that at one point I stopped using mine and it was due to the scares about gateway actually removing hax because their version of a9lh doesn''t have write protection or something (which the one in the 3ds guide does).

This thread seems to have all the info regarding that sort of thing (https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/), So I'd say go there after you update to b9s and before using your gateway or any of it's files. I only used my gw toward the end for the cheat engine, I might check it out again though and see about running it in an emunand after I get a bit more up to speed on the do's and don't concerning gateway and b9s, cos they might have changed since the last time I was a heavy gw user.

I went ahead and installed B9S and all went well. It just took a few minutes. I haven't installed any of the additional apps yet that are recommended on 3ds.guide and I'm still on 9.0.0-20E.

I'm curious to know why I can no longer use the DS Profile exploit, or Cubic Ninja to launch into the old emunand or GW menu. What's stopping that from working?

the DS profile exploit was patched after 4.5 i think you need to patch MSET to get it to work on 9.2, and you need 11.6 payload to run ninjhax, but why you want to do that? you can use homebrew launcher.cia or rosalina to launch the homebrew channel.

I was only asking out of curiosity and a desire to understand the hacks. My MSET was patched. Earlier when I clicked on "DS Profile" I got an error from Luma3DS (I think) but now it launches the stock DS Profile menu. Interesting.

I don't know what that means, sorry. Ninjhax used to run on 9.0.

I have a ton more questions. I spent many hours on Google this afternoon looking for answers. It isn't so easy to find all the up-to-date guides when you don't really know the names of things. I would like to have an unmodified SysNAND for my real 3DS games (so that I can comfortably play them online at last), and an EmuNAND where my emulators are. To that end, I'm trying to get answers to these questions:
  • How do I link an existing GW EmuNAND to the Luma3DS launcher?
  • Is there any way to tell the Luma3DS to forbid unsigned code on SysNAND?
  • Does "Luma3DS's UNITINFO patch" refer to Luma3DS's option to "Show NAND or user string in System Settings"?
Thank you

The only reason you could do that was because of the MSET cia file you installed. As mentioned the ds exploit was patched a way back, but the cia you installed was an older version of the system settings that still had the vulnerability. (This is why the new3DS features in system settings vanish after you install the MSET cia for your consoles region, because they obviously did not exist on the o3ds)

Also before I start my own thread about this issue, just thought I'd ask here (not to hijack or anything).
I can't boot ninjhax on 11.6 and can't find any guide that suggests a fix.

I wiped the game data and selected my n3ds firm on the ninjhax website. Followed instructions to scan each qr code with the camera, but whenever I try to launch it the thing throws me an arm11 error.
Is it because of the updated rosalina homebrew channel? I started with a fresh sd and got the same result. I definitely scanned each qr code properly, and the payload is there on my sd card. I just can't get to the "install ninjax" menu thing that comes up after you scan all the codes.

Any ideas?

Install the Homebrew Launcher CIA and it'll start the rosalina HBL. (Or switch an installed app like download play to HBL with rosalina.) Payloads don't work on Luma.

I can access hbl just fine using rosalina. I was just wondering why it no longer worked from ninjhax since that was updated to work on the latest firm.
But that makes sense, I knew luma only loads .firm instead of .bin payloads but I didn't put two and two together when trying to figure this one out. Thanks for clearing that up.

Is there any way to make ninjhax work on luma then? Would the exploit boot to hbl if I converted the ninjhax payload to .firm, or would that need some tweaking on the ninjhax side too?

Boot into Gateway mode with the Gateway cartridge out of the system, then put it back in. Choose to boot "classic mode". Your game cartridges will work but the Select menu will not.
You've never had to boot with the cartridge out. Even before classic mode was added to the select menu, all you had to do was hold select when the GW splash screen came up. When loaded via luma as a chainloader, you also have to hold L for some reason. So, yea, hold L+select with GW in and it brings you to the GW menu.

Also, I can't believe that thread STILL hasn't been updated. There has been a GW.firm file floating around for quite some time. No need to mess around with the v2gw.bin and what not...

How do you guys use cheats without gateway 3ds?
NTR
Sure there is no built-in cheat engine to search for the value in game, but you can connect a PC to 3DS to search for the values, it's not easy as GW, but we take what we got.

There is many plugins for ntr cheats, there is also a tool to convert gw cheats to ntr, there is a guide somewhere for how to make cheats for ntr.
