Poll: what do you think of VR gaming?

Fove-VR-Headset.jpg

Virtual reality seemed like an impossible dream a few years back.
Now that there are several major solutions out there (PS VR, Oculus, HTC, Samsung...) VR gaming is a reality.
Well a virtual reality at least! So as a gamer, how do you feel about VR gaming?

Answer the poll and discuss!

Dont know. It is only a beginning of the future. We will need to see more. Therefore, I dont like VR headset.. Too big and SO UGLY design. Why hurry and buy it for the experience ? Thats understandable but I will pass in the near future for improvement VR headset resize first. And I dont know if VR will survive in the future. Look at 3D TV.. (Good things that we dont buy 3D TV because we knew about the future). And it was already decline and unpopular now.

Only tried it once for like five minutes. It was an interesting experience but I'd have to try it over a few weeks to give a more detailed and educated opinion.

Wow 5 full pages and not one single person mentioned Resident Evil 7 in VR. For all the naysayers out there, go play that game in VR. It's the full VR gaming experience and what should be the future.

I own a PS VR and I absolutely love the hell out of it, but I am a bit worried about the tech. I think all the negativity about it will ultimately not let it mature.

This past weekend I met up with a group of friends to show them the VR and their reactions were priceless. Each one of them said to me, "Wow!! Seeing the game on TV does NOT do it justice. When you have the headset on it's a totally different experience"

THIS IS the future of gaming whether you like it or not. It's the next evolutionary step. We have 2 eyes to see objects in 3 dimensions so then why shouldn't games be made in the same fashion? The true reason people think VR and 3D are gimmicks is because their eyes aren't used to that much information given to them so in return they get strained and dismiss it all. You eventually do get used to it if you keep subjecting your eyes and brain to the concept.

As far as software for VR goes, it's in its infancy. So far I own maybe close to 20 VR games. A good handful of them are incredibly short and basic experiences and maybe a few are full fledged.

Glorified tech demo game list/very short games
Batman Arkham VR
PS VR Worlds (Fun though)
Job Simulator
Apollo 11
Here they Lie
Until Dawn rush of blood (Fun as hell!!)

Full fledged games
Resident Evil 7
Driveclub VR
Superhot VR (short unfortunately)

VR tech will however face 1 major issue though and that's how on earth companies will make games for different genres. Think about it. Right now most of what we have in VR are first person experiences. All genres can't continue this way. Like for instance how on earth would a 1 on 1 fighting game exist? It wouldn't be in VR otherwise it wouldn't be fun. You'd need to make a 3rd person POV perspective in a VR space. I'm all for that, but a lot of people would complain that it makes no difference.

I leave you with a quote from a Sony guy that is 100% true;

"Our biggest challenge will be to get people demoing VR. Because there's no way to sell VR until you've tried it... You can watch over the shoulder, you can read articles, but – and I mean this genuinely – everybody that I know who has tried PlayStation VR has taken off their headset with a smile, and said 'wow'. So you've got to try it. That's the challenge."

honestly having previously played with little cardboard vr headsets in the past I had assumed that's all it had to offer, but having recently been to a professional VR experience centre and playing a multiplayer vr game I can say the cardboard experience really ruined my initial perception of VR tech,

but unfortunately I think the cost of equipment and space needed to fully appreciate it's function makes it kinda impractical, personally I would like to see more vr centres so they become more like the traditional bowling centre, where most major cities have a affordable high quality setup for people to use/experience high quality vr tech without needing to spend a ton of money on something on something that may or may not get many good games

practically it's probably better for software developers to be targeting VR games for the tradition arcade setting, I would imagine a good quality time crisis vr arcade would probably do quite well in a arcade setting

Exactly right!! The traditional arcade should have never died. It just didn't keep up to technology in the same way home gaming did. Had they still continued to thrive we probably would have seen VR gaming like 10 years ago.

I'm intrigued by the possibilities VR holds! However, I'm going to hang back from it for a while because it does need some work. Give it a few years and it will improve tremendously

I would look at it the other way and if a game like RE7 failed to set the world alight then the time is not yet right.

If Nintendo can manage to do a worldwide PR push for their failures of consoles then Sony and Capcom can surely get it together for that to capitalise on some groundswell.

Total agreement that AR will much more impact on the world than VR. Too many times VR makes people nauseous. AR is where it's at for the next few years. VR might catch up, but we need to get rid of the bulk headsets for sure.

...

Yeah, you're quite right. You really have to try in order to understand.
The main downside i could find for my first experience was the "grain" of the screen.
Even if the focus is virtually far from you, the two screens are just a few centimeters from your eyes.
Dunno if i explained correctly...

I own a Samsung VR and have tried the Oculus Rift before, but I get headaches from using it for like 20 mins. It's just not appealing anyway, I'd still rather play on a TV

Holy shit 8K. Probably going to need 1080ti in SLI to run that. I hope you can lower the resolution for demanding games.
The price is a bit for the full package, but still cheaper than the Vive.
I don't have that kind of money though, and I'm always wary of pledging a lot of money on Kickstarter, I've gotten burned before when I pledged $400 on Robot Dragonfly and they ran out of money before they got to mass production and had to give up.
Maybe when it starts shipping out to people and if the reviews are good I'll consider getting one. Not going to be building my new PC until sometime next year anyway and it certainly won't be SLI capable, it's a SFF build.

For the 8K as well as the 5K model the recommended GPU is actually just a GTX 1070.
The technical details would be a little much, but I'll try to explain it as short as possible.

Pimax 8K display resolution: 2x3840x2160 (equals 7680x2160)
Pimax 5K display resolution: 2x2560x1440 (equals 5120x1440)
Actually rendered image resolution for both HMDs due to limitations with Display Port bandwidth: 2x560x1440
The 5K will display those natively and the 8K has an upscaler built in to scale the image to 2x3840x2160 pixels.

Even though it's a bit disappointing to have an upscaled image on the 8K HMD, I'm sure it will look a lot better than on the 5K model due to the higher pixel count (which equals less screen-door effect).

Waiting is a good option here. I'm sure the HMD will hit the market, since the product is already finished and has been shown at expositions within the last months. The company even already made a VR headset that is available on Amazon (the Pimax 4K which sadly does not support lighthouse tracking).
However, I'd also like to see myself, how good or bad the upscaling actually affects the image quality, before I shell out my money for it (even though I'd only pay for the HMD itself, since I can reuse my Vive's tracking solution).

And now for something unrelated: If you got an HTC Vive, you should really play To The Top. That game's awesome.

Too little effect for the price, for now, and it doesn't combine at all with my current gaming tastes. Even if I could in any way afford it, it would still be way too early tech and soon outdated.
I imagine I'll go for it in about 10 years and love it then.
