Agreed. This is asinine. During peak times they get dozens of these things and would have to spend hours of labor manually updating each one when they should be selling them. No business would operate like that. It adds no value at all. Further, no customer would want a store to open the product they are paying 300 bucks for to do anything to it at all. How many consoles were sold by Gamestop in the last year? Say it was 1/2 a million switches. How long would it take to update all of them, 8 minutes? Maybe they could cut that down if they had several TVs to 5 minutes. So it would cost 2.5 million minutes in labor. At 8 bucks an hour that would cost GS $333k across the stores. What kind of moron of a manager would agree to that. Add in the PS4s and XBOs and it will cost over 1 mil per year. It is not happening.

It is likely that they update and wipe all used systems and somehow this led to the rumor that they do this for all new ones too.
This. There's no way they do this to new consoles. Especially none I've bought from them. Stop with the obnoxious conspiracy theories guys.

It's unlikely that happens, one it's a waste of time for them when they should be selling them. But opening a new product like the switch and revising? Sounds like a major nono. If it had to be updated or its updated it came that way from Nintendo.

Took me 5 minutes to find this.

"For games, the estimated effect of illegal online transactions on sales is positive – implying that illegal consumption leads to increased legal consumption."

Key word there is "estimated". Any one can estimate anything. That doesn't mean it's accurate
Try again

Well I'm pretty sure a lot of people rather have the original than a pirated copy of the game/movie/tv-series they like. I'm certainly am!
Remember that a pirated copy isn't a lost sale. It was never a sale to begin with. With todays shovelware of crap movies, games and tv-series. For example it's a miracle that people still go to the movies, when ticket prices skyrocket and the quality of movies are subpar.

Exactly this.

I remember shareware, I can't remember how many discs my friends and I swapped just to try out new games. I like to think of piracy as an extension of that.

Demos rarely exist today. Why would I take a gamble when I can try it for free?

I don't know how many movies I downloaded this year and turned off midway though and just deleted. Such a massive heap load of crap today... Captain Underpants my GF liked so I had to sit through that awful dreadful movie. Thank god I didn't pay a cent for it. Only plus is Weird Al Yankovic, but that's about it.

There are legitimate reasons for downloading movies as well.

Older movies can be really difficult to get once they're out of print, so then the easiest way to get it is by pirating. Truer still if the movie didn't sell that well, or isn't a cult classic. There are a lot of good shitty films out there.

This is true now for me with the Wii as well. (Man we're off-topic!) but eshop closes down 2019 so there is no way to get the games except by second hand and Nintendo and/or publisher will never see the money for second hand. So for me it's a system that it's just to pirate away on without feeling any remorse.

If the Switch will go down the same path as the Wii will to basically be a offline console (that it probably will eventually) it's also something I say opens the door to pirate away on without feeling any remorse since it's abandonware by then.

no one even asked you to
you decided to butt into a conversation that had nothing to do with you

Much like you, however I tend to further conversations instead of insulting and belittling others. You should try it sometime.

But to get back on topic...

What about newest amazon shipments?

Someone in the firmware by serial thread got a 3.0.1 through Amazon Canada on Sept 26th.

The EU tried to bury a massive study showing piracy is a good thing https://www.engadget.com/2017/09/22/eu-suppressed-study-piracy-no-sales-impact/

Besides that study everyone on the PC platform already knows this is true.

There's an inherent problem with studies in which respondents are asked to comment on illegal or socially unacceptable behavior. This problem is called Social Acceptability Bias. Respondents don't want to admit to xxxxx because its illegal or against social norms so they answer in a positive way. Its kind of like in the old day of tv set boxes to record Nielsen ratings. People with the boxes wanted the researches to think they were intelligent so they watched PBS and news programming instead of the shows they'd normally watch.

This study was also done in the EU and I'd be curious to see how the survey results would differ in NA. Are the views on piracy different between the two "cultures"? How about in east Asia where piracy is rampant?

Out of curiosity, what did you mean by Besides that study everyone on the PC platform already knows this is true.? I was thinking the reason I don't pirate PC games...or Android games. Viruses. After reformatting my PC a few years ago, I bought the handful of games I actually played on the PC. Same with Android.
