Will Microsoft make an Xbox Mini? (Or could Sony or Sega release mini versions of their consoles?)

So Nintendo released the unobtainable NES mini last year and now their about to release the SNES mini in the upcoming months.
(Not to mention the fact that there are rumors of an upcoming N64 mini which will follow the SNES mini in the following years)

So my question is does anyone else see Microsoft or Sony or Hell even Sega following the same path? meaning releasing miniature versions of classic consoles as a collectors items or hell even nostalgia items?

I personally would love to see an OG Xbox Mini or even a Sega Dream cast mini (omg )

original-xbox.png

(However, i am kinda unsure as to how THAT ⬆️ behemoth of a machine can be reduced to a "miniature" size)

Can MS even reduce the size of the OG xbox? from a programming/design standpoint?
I mean have MS, Sony or Sega at any point come out and said they are against making such a product?

Regardless of the Answer, what mini console do you want to see released?

My Top 3 would be:

#1 Dreamcast
#2 OG XBOX
#3 Sega Genesis (A proper one released by Sega not the AT GAMEs one)

You should have posted this in general gaming discussion.

Also you can make a og xbox much smaller even with the original hardware.

MS won't release a "mini" version of their console.
It was big due to the choice of a 3.5 inch HDD + 3.5 inch DVD drive, along with off the shelf components.
The original Box isn't that big tho.
Look at the Phatty PS2, hell, original Xbone also isn't the thinnest, nor is the PS3.

Another reason why MS won't release it cause they are going to release Xbox BC on Xbone.
And another reason is is that the original Xbox's games are still running franchises.
Not to mention the game sizes (averaging 3 GB) you'd end up with a very expensive console then.

Yeah this was one of those things where i was originally talking about the OG Xbox Mini but then i thought why not include Sony and Sega too.

Any MODS out there. Please move this thread if you can, Thanks

Nice points. Yeah the OG ps2 was quite big. But regarding the BC thing, i agree that perhaps right now wouldn't be a good time to announce such a thing but maybe 2019ish? What do you think about that?

I mean sure BC is good and all but personally i prefer playing on the OG console that the game was released on. But again that depends on the game and system were talking about. Some games just work very well with specific systems.

And Regarding the Game size point, kmon dude we live in 2017 where we have GBs, TBs etc.... and this is MS we are talking about here. I mean these guys make money like nobody else since they own both Windows and Xbox brands. But lets say they released 20-50 OG XBOX games that were the best of the best like KOTOR 1-2, shenmue 2 etc... the most we are looking at there would be 100 maybe 200Gb for all 20-50 games depending on size ofcourse? I dont think game size would be a problem but rather whether or not MS would do it and when would be the best time for them to do it.

And also what are your thoughts on SEGA making a Genesis or DC mini? or Sony with a PS1 or PS2 mini? :D

Xbox BC should launch in Christmas '17, '19 is far to close to release such a console then.
It would be atleast another decade orso before you can think about it (NES got released in '85 and the NES mini in '15?)

As do I, I love the original box.

Well, it's not really that simple.
The old Xbox relied on the harddrive, it had 3 swap partitions it heavily utilized for loading times.
Not to mention a C drive where it stored its dash and an E drive for DLC/title updates/saves.

Say, MS did make a Xbox mini, this year, much like the NES and SNES mini.
It comes with 30 games, just like those two.
You'd then be looking at 128 GB of flash memory for storage (you need a "harddrive" and a game drive)
A x86 CPU powerful enough to do 1080p and HDMI, couple of gigs of RAM (to, you know, make games run smoother and allow 1080p scaling), a GPU powerful enough to also allow 1080p scaling.
Then you should also consider that MS is probably producing 10 million of them and that every tiny expensive part gets even more expensive.

You'd end up with a box that costs 250 maybe 300 quid, if not more.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, but I don't think it's feasible now nor it being a smart move.

I can see Sony releasing a PS1 mini.
Emulation of it is easy, and the games weigh a lot less.
N64 mini I can also see happening in the future but other then that.
Idk.. prolly not.

Off topic, got a guide to building that? Google is about as helpful as farting in a sock to make it smell better.

Yeah as much as i want this to happen. I am or was quite curious about how it would work internally since as you have said the OG xbox is full of components that are well quite expensive. Plus i am not quite familiar with what the xbox is running under its "hood" haha. So you think it is more feasible within the next decade if it happens. That is a better alternative to not having it at all. Ahh... I can imagine it now a small cute but slightly chubby mini xbox.:rofl2:

You basically remove the DVD drive from the system and swap out the HDD for a CF card or small 2.5 inch HDD.
Then cut part of the top away to make it smaller.
Extremely ugly imho but whatever floats yer goat.

Xbox isn't even emulated properly, if the system would be emulated then be sure to have more money ready as that would rack up the costs even more.
Xbox emulation nowadays is done with HLE (High Level Emulation)

The specs themselves are kinda weakish.
Off the shelf Pentium 3 at 733 Mhz.
64MB of SDRAM
Geforce 3 GPU

How about the dreamcast?

Hmm, That would be fun but I doubt Sega will do it.
Otherwise we'd see a Mastersystem Mini first ;p

A mini version of the console with a digital marketplace on a 2.5"HDD is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Never said it's beyond the realm of possibility.
Just stating facts on why MS wouldn't do it.

It's hit and miss on that front.. Granted there's a small chance they'd actually make a profit "re-releasing" an older console that way. They're trying to keep the One up, like you were saying. Dunno. I can see it on both sides of the fence.

I'm leaning towards MS pushing the Xbone.
They wouldn't announce Xbox BC for nothing.

That actually looks half decent yeh.
I personally wouldn't do it but it is better then the first pic.

As long as it's good and robust..

I wouldn't know tbh.
I really hope it's a major improvement over the 360's BC.

Well, the original Xbox was x86 based.. So, if not? Microsoft really didn't think things through. Here's hoping it's not based on the BC that was on the 360 either..

Emulating x86 on a Tricore PPC with 512 MB of RAM and a weakish GPU.
Aye, they really didn't think it through ;p
But it worked!
