guys I have a question about the scene.
Really love all this hacking stuff, and I would like to help scene. Look for exploits, create homebrew, hack my console and find my own methods to get what I want.

But I have a problem.

Fist guys do you have lots of knowledge about programming?

What do I need to know to look for exploits?

I mean what programming language. What tools.
Is somebody here that did not study programming?

I don't have any knowledge about programming.

Smea did a 3DS development kit (sort of) on smealum.github.io/3ds, but that's for writing homebrew not looking for exploits
Thanks guys, do you have links? Some free ebooks or the link to smea toolkit?

You'd need a few years of experience, both programming and computer science. Start learning C++ and computer science now and later on you might be able to help the Switch scene.

Years of knowledge and like @Quantumcat suggested, you are better off focusing on the Switch since the 3DS scene will be dying off.
Although if you really want to help, the scene is always in need of helpful users, troubleshooters, testers, etc. Most people who fall under these categories are knowledge enough to help others troubleshoot their issues. Which the only way to get started is just starting with basic troubleshooting knowledge and learning from there.
My guide can be helpful for addressing the most common issues popping up

smealum.github.io/3ds, near the bottom of the page

Thanks for the link.

And thanks Lilith, I really would like to learn how to find exploits and of course will try to be a tester too or troubleshooter.

I never learned any programming. But I hope I can get going.

Finding an exploit is a lot of work and something you can't really accomplish overnight. The people who find these exploit have literal years of knowledge, research, and training and even then it's still not easy to accomplish.
Start small and work your way up. What you need most is to study and work with the community.

Yup. Will start from the beginning and learn some programming, will try to get some small works for now. Thanks for the advice.

Well if your goal is to contribute you can volunteer to be a tester or make a financial contribution.

If your goal is to be one of those who knows what the fuck they're doing then go back to school for at least a few years. Passing is not enough, you're going to need to know your shit inside out.

You'll probably decide fuck it like I did some years ago, but if this is what you want to do then go for it. Even if you change your mind about being a player in the scene good marks will get you a job.

Other suggestions, don't be afraid to ask questions and ask for help. Even I find myself learning something new from the community from time to time

Yeah everything is about asking lol. I really like programming but I did not study that.

Then I wish you all the best. If you start now by the time you get good there will be some pretty interesting shit going on in the Switch scene.

I mean, tons of people have already said this but if people who have taken years out of their lives to learn programming and how consoles work, and takes another few years just to get homebrew working on it. I think you'd be close to the switch scene, you could always develop homebrew for the 3ds right now and then when the switch gets hacked then you might have more knowledge on that.

Yes, I mean of course is not easy but with proper preparation people can do it. Lots of people dream with that. But for me I will try everything so I mean even old consoles.

I mean, don't expect to do it in 1 or 2 years, maybe 3-6 years might do it. That's why people suggest trying to work on the switch.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
