PS1/2 Help figuring out what kind of mod I have?

So I picked up an used fat PS2, SCHP-50004 (PAL). It came with a bunch of backup PS2 and PS1 discs, so I figured it must be modded, which it seems to be, but I have no idea how. It plays legit PS2 DVD games and backup PS2 games, both CD and DVD. WIth Legit PS2 CD games, DVD movies, legit, import or backup PS1 games all fail to boot, the screen fades to black and goes right back to the browser. For legit PS2 CD games it says they arent a supported format.

The system itself seems to be all original, the warranty sticker was still in place (I had to remove it to clean the insides) and the memory card didnt seem to have anything of note on it, just regular game saves and system settings. The backups seem to work fine without the memory card inserted too.

So, what mod do I have on my hands? How do I boot PS1 games and legit CD games on it? How can I make my own backups for it? Anything else I could do with it, this being my first modded console?

Try holding L1+L2+R1+R2 while booting the PS2. Some chips boot to a menu. Definitely seems like you have a modchip. You may be able to hold O while booting to boot a psx game.

No luck with either method, sadly. Is it even possible to install a modchip without destroying the warranty sticker?

Ehm if a modchip is already installed the warranty seal is already broken or they removed it with a hair dryer or hot air gun.

Thats why Im asking, since the warranty seal was not broken when I got the system, so I doubt it could be a chip

Fair enough, I'll do a double check and see if there is anything that stands out on the inside

You could try holding the power button until the eject light comes on or double tapping the power button for getting ps1 and dvd movies to work. Older chips used one of those methods rather than auto-switching/holding a controller button to go over to ps1/dvd mode.

I took the entire thing apart (managing to damage one of the ribbon cables on the disc drive in the process, whoops). Sure looks like something was done to it!

if your phat one can play ps2 ps1 games that are burnt on a disc... ... it is modded with a modchip ^^ .. does a logo appear after u boot your ps2 ?

i think in your ps2 is a modchip without any setup/settings, i ve had a friend with something like that too...

It plays real PS2 DVD games and burnt CD and DVD PS2 games like normal. PS1 games (imports, burnt etc) and DVD movies go to the browser which shows them as blue CD games and real PS2 CD games aren't recognized at all.

Damn son,seems like you have a early prototype/modchip on your hands! That would explain why ps1 games didn't work.
