has anyone created a digital photo library for thier family

this is an idea i have had in my head for a while both sides of my family have extensive photo libraries on negatives and slides and what i plan to do is (with the necessary hardware) create a digital photo library for my whole family to access. how tedious of a task would this be?

Sooo you want to store digital photos that contain your family and let them view it from anywhere?

A shared dropbox for your family would be a good idea.
Or a shared imgur album.

You're looking at spending hours getting every photo scanned in.
This can be an extremely tedious job.
Be sure to rename your photos to the time and date they where taken on (if that's accessible to you).
Then sort it in folders going by month, inside folders going by year.

I personally couldn't care less if me family dropped dead right in front of me.
So.. those are the only two options I can quickly think off.

Kids scanning photo albums as punishment for things done in school , rules broke at home , and my own time volunteered ...then uploading to whichever sites as a host and transferring onto USB for use in photo/video frames has indeed proved to be quite the task and taken a long time to complete and seems to be never ending

Yup, what Dinoh said. You could also have a shared Google drive, or a shared Mega folder with an encryption key or something. There are quite a few options.

Wouldn't do a shared mega.
Older family members tend to be illiterate when it comes to computers.
So a decryption key for such a site wouldn't be a wise idea.
A simple to use website would be the best for them

Or do it a bit more old school and order a bunch of USB drives.
Copy all the pics you scanned in onto the drives and send them to your family members.
Might be costly but at least it's private and fool proof for the older members.
For the technophobic grand parents, you could just make a physical album.
Expensive but eh, at least they can enjoy it as well.

Scanning. Tedious but you can see real progress.
Sorting metadata (times, dates, people involved, locations...). Tedium like you would not believe.

That said I would be careful of information overload, or the photo equivalent of pirate syndrome. Though photos were still variously special things until around the time we all got digital cameras there will almost certainly be junk within it.
If you can arrange something like each person, key times in their lives, notable events and such like rather than 10 angles of the same wedding and a picture of a cat nobody alive will remember seeing then that can make life easier. Now you do have the different strokes for different folks thing (if there is a photo of said cat it might have been important to them and "so and so always talked about it, was nice to see it" can happen) but most can at least appreciate a high days and holidays approach.

I have many many GB's of pictures stored of the family, we went all digital with pictures as soon as it was an option.

It's nice to be able to stick a thumb drive in my PC and copy the pictures and if I want physical copies to send to someone, I can head on up to the local photo place (lots of stores will do printing for you.) pay a few bucks depending on the size and have quality prints.

I did this recently for my grandsons graduation from preschool... lol Was a lot of fun.

As for my storage method, I keep one complete set of pictures on my computer for quick access and quick adding more... Then every few months or so I back up to 2 external hard drives so if my PC gets encrypted by some ransomware or something I can just format and put everything back.

I have 2 external drives for extra oh shit redundancy, if I did just one with my luck my PC's picture drive would die, and the back up drive would on the same day.... lol

I was thinking of making a Google account that way everybody can access it via Google photos or Google Drive
