'Metal Gear' Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

image.png

Thirty years ago, some Hideo Kojima released a stealth game titled Metal Gear on the MSX2. This would be the beginning of the wildly popular video game series, that will be loved (and hated) by many for years to come, and will turn out to be a personal favorite of mine.

Whatever your thoughts on the series, it has had an undeniably significant impact on the video game industry, effectively setting the bar for stealth games and story-telling in video games.

Users on social media like Facebook and Twitter have been using the hashtag #MG30th to share their thoughts about the game. You can do the same on your favorite social media or down in the comment section below.

So, what was your best (or worst) Metal Gear moment?

The original Metal Gear holds up surprisingly well, in my opinion. I played it for the first time around 2 years ago in the HD collection, and I genuinely had a good time with it. I'm no superfan, but I definitely have a soft spot for the MG series, Peace Walker and V excluded (yet to play 4). As for my favorite of the series, I actually have the most fun with Portable Ops, but MGS3 is a close second.

yup i did like them up till MGS3, MGS2 i think its story was far too complex and gameplay let it down.

then came MGS4 which again WOW OTT on the story, could have been cut down, made a little more simpler but then came MGS5 and no matter how hard ive tried I simply cant complete the game because it bored the shit out of me having to go here, do this, go there, do that, return here do this, head over there then come back and each time leaving the zone.

i think this was the downside with peacewalker and no idea why kojima carried it over to MGS5, its understandable for the PSPs limited hardware.

My dude, you have to play MGS4, it is incredible! Although it is a HUGE time sink. Also get ready for a 72 min long cut-scene! :creep:;)

Edit: My bad, its not 72 min....... its 71

Never played a Metal Gear game, but you know the guy on the cover of the original game is very similar to Kyle Reese from The Terminator. I'd venture to bet it is. So Snake went from Kyle Reese to Snake Plissken, pretty good.
a lot of games back then used to copy off movie posters.

in fact this is actually copied off an image of kyle reese from the terminator

Oh man... Metal Gear Solid is just way too amazing. I love the whole series and every game in their own way. I bought 5 on launch, and played it for a week straight, good memories. But the best memories I have are from when I played MGS3 on my ps2 (Not even the better version! The one with the awful overhead camera) Sneaking through the Jungle was never boring for me, and I replayed it many times. Im really sad that Metal Gear is most likely dead at this point, with MG Survive being a zombie survival shooter game. I really hope they notice how they fucked up and do a complete turnaround, with maybe a reboot. Either way, I love Metal Gear and Hideo Kojima, his games are always filled with so much character. I love Snatcher as well.

Soon we will get Death Stranding. Hopefully that will fill some of the void created by Konomi's actions

Happy birthday, Metal Gear. One of my favorite series of all time. ;-;

Although MGSV's story disappointed me (amazing gameplay, though), I've had many good memories with this series and am sad to see what it's become. =/ Hopefully Death Stranding will have some nods to the franchise to make my fangirl heart happy.

Edit: I keep forgetting Metal Gear Survive exists. I think that's for the better.

The thing is, this isnt even metal gear solid, its metal gear.
Actually they started out as Metal Gear, then Metal Gear Solid Snake and then kept as Metal Gear Solid, these are actually supposed to be games centered round Solid Snake, but was kept because it sounded good.

Then it was popular with its nick name..... MGS

which konami have kept to when naming this crap MGS Metal Gear Survive.

But it is still a Metal Gear game and looks a total bag of wank.

I would like to see the franchise come to a close, to truly end the path of Solid Snake, they could even open up for more if the patriots were to make more clones knowing which one truly became the superior clone..... ironically Solid Snake the one said to be inferior became top dawg....... kind of what got lost in translation by most gamers when playing them.
