Hello! I'm running an O3DS with B9S 1.2. I updated from Luma3DS 7.1 to 8.1 and after being told the update was successful, I can no longer boot my 3DS. The power LED turns on for a maybe a second before it just shuts off without any screen activity and GodMode9 does not work at all. These symptoms can be seen with and without the SD card. I suspected maybe the device needed to be charged but this behavior can be observed even while it's plugged in.

Is there something really simple I'm missing or do I need to send this off somewhere to unbrick or try to unbrick myself? If it comes down to it I'd like to unbrick myself but I'm still confused on what actually happened in the first place. Any ideas? If more information is needed let me know.

I don't believe they are running b9s v1.2 as they cannot boot v7.1 (unless it's the legacy version with no Rosalina features) with b9s v1.2.
Did even remember that! Been rather distracted from the scene lately, got a bit hard to remember everything.

OP: Follow this guide to updating your B9S, then update Luma3DS

Thanks for letting me know there is an 8.1, I'm going to enjoy that second less of boot time on my N3DS XL

Thanks for the swift reply! I'll try that guide out and report back once I finish

It works! I guess that kind of scare is what I get for not paying close attention to information about new updates. Thanks!

Actually, you can boot 7.1 on b9s 1.2 though it takes a little work. Just use bootctr9, set luma7.firm as the default, set the boot delay to 0 and the splash screen to off.

Updating luma3ds to 8.1 with lumaupdater it says: do you want to enable downloading boot.firm on ctr-nand?. Should i enable or disable this?

If you want to boot without the SD card inserted, enable it. If not, disable it. Note: the enable/disable option only affects the program. If you disable it, you will still have access to your CTRNAND through programs such as FBI or GM9.

Well i always keep my sd into my 3ds so... but i'm gona enable it, i guess is a good idea to keep it in the ctr-nand too just in case.

I got an error: "FATAL. Couldn't open ctr-nand for renaming. Could not backup /boot.firm (!!), aborting..."
NOTE: I'm runing the lumaupdater through hbl.

I haven't tested Luma Updater through the Homebrew Launcher as I just use the .cia, but it's possible that standard HBL access can't access CTRNAND.

It sounds like they didn't update their boot9strap version, which they need to do to update from v7.1 to v8.1.

Hi there! A while ago you helped me upgrade my CFW to B9S and all. The thing is, I did the same thing as OP and my 3DS won't boot for the life of it. I tried updating my Luma to 8.1 today and when it asked to press start to reboot, it never did and even now after trying to update B9S with the guide link you provided, it still won't boot. The blue power on light blinks once and the 3DS turns off again, just like OP reported. Could you give me a hand? What could I be doing wrong?
