Update your search skills?
But in all seriousness yes it's safe to update, however there's a new hack b9s you should update your a9lh to first + luma to 8.0.
Follow the a9lh to b9s section of the 3ds.guide

I highly suggest updating to B9S. Luma3DS has dropped support for previous entrypoints and ReiNAND will be following soon as well. Once you are running the latest B9S and Luma3DS, I also suggest updating to 11.4.
If you have a US system, you need to use the US ROM. Ever Oasis is the only game where region-locking/RF will not work and you need to CIA of your region to get it to work

awesome i will attempt this tomorrow. since I am on A9LH and the system essentially runs off the SD card, if i want to be safe before i try going to B9S, i can just copy the contents of the SD card to a safe place and if i mess something up i can just copy back what i had on the SD card and be fine?

If it puts you at ease, there have been zero recorded bricks caused by updating to B9S. I have successfully updated 6 systems to B9S myself as well updated their builds of B9S.

You can play it, but it's just heavily suggested to update nowadays.
I am not trying to push anything, just A9LH no longer has any real support. This means future problems will be harder to deal with. As well future CFW updates will no longer be introduced to A9LH

awesome!! does that guide cover nand backup too? i think the only time i did nand backup was during the first process of doing AL9H lilke more than a year ago lol
I don't see it in there, but I could be missing something. But I suggest using hourglass9 to do the NAND backup

ill do that, ur a champ! do i backup emunand or sysnand with hourglass? sorry ive de-volved into a super noob after all this time. i think installing AL9H was the most epic shit i ever did in my life back then
Backup both of them. You can use hourglass9 to flash your emuNAND to your sysNAND, even after B9S is installed. I suggest Hourglass9 because it safely restores NANDs by default.
