"The way we continue to make Nintendo 3DS vibrant as a platform is first we continue to innovate from form factor standpoint," Fils-Aime said. "So the New 2DS XL is just the latest for us in having form factor innovation. We know colors are a key differentiator, consumers love the variety of different colors. And also the larger screen and the different form factor in the 2DS family, we think is a going to drive and continue to drive the 3DS platform."

The other major pillar of Nintendo's support is, of course, supporting its handheld with games.

"We’re going to continue to bring new content, and that’s what’s going to keep this device vibrant and keep it going well into 2018 and beyond."

Fils-Aime made it clear that though the Nintendo Switch is a portable console, it is a home console and not a replacement for what Nintendo wants to accomplish with the 3DS and 2DS.

"We say that it’s a home console that you take with you and play with anyone, anywhere, anytime. It really is meant to deliver that great home console performance, you just happen to be able to undock it and take it with you, which is a key innovation," Fils-Aime said. "But look, in the end, what we want is we want the consumer to call it their device, right? Their preferred gaming device that they can play fantastic Zelda, Mario, third-party content, all of their favorite franchises brought to life on the platform. That’s what we want. And we’re greedy and we want Nintendo 3DS right alongside it."

* If the 3ds keeps up its momentum.

Even then, I suspect it will be either whatever they were working on before the switch came out or rubbish tie in/low budget stuff aimed at kids.

Right now, the 3DS is more likely their back up in case the Switch fails, similar to how they said the DS wouldn't replace the Game Boy.

Well guess is official, switch isn't 3ds replacement. Is it own stand alone. Well I mean, well why can't we get updates that MEAN SOMETHING. I like 3ds but i'm not a fan of constantly updating for no reason. add some new features or content.:hateit:
I was asking the same thing when the switch released and Nintendo said officially that the Switch is not a 3ds replacement and that the handheld is in developement or something like that. (if my memory is correct)

Well I mean is always been the stand alone system, they always supported the 3ds, they long since stop supporting wii u. That just the direction nintendo is headed, mobile gaming. Honestly as long as consoles exist, i will be happy but I'm worried about it.

See, I know what reggie is trying to say here, but this is just more of a PR-stunt than anything from Nintendo of America.
Even if they don't want to admit it, The Switch is thought as the new hybrid console for this new Generation. The base of it being the fact that it bridges the way of home console and portable console, and in Japan, this philosophy is dominating right now (we still have yet to see an opinion change from people in the 9th generation, according to the results with XBOX [Xbox one x], and PS4 pro, when they release officially); the sole purpose is to substitute (now eventually) the 3DS, and also pretend that WiiU didn't even existed and replace ASAP.

The sole reason we see a full support is because the Switch on its own was making great sales after being released on march, and that surprised the investors. The switch doesn't need to replace the two markets yet, as the people see it still as a home console, but even outside of Japan, The ideology of using it more as a portable home console, and buying more than one for some members of the family is rising...and fast! (most articles i read from gaming magazines from Mexico, for example, state that they buy "one for the kids, and another for the parents"; beats me how they can afford TWO switches with our overpriced nintendo market, but i digress)

As they said in the Investor's Meeting. They won't abandon development for 3DS since it's still "healthy", but to think that they aren't planning on discontinuing it in the not-so-far-future, since the Switch will eat little by little of the 3DS' library as years come by, is mere delusion.

The clock is already ticking. We have a new full-fledged Pokemon game in the works; we have Monster Hunter XX being released as well, and a lot of projects that were contemplated for 3ds are being moved by nintendo to the Switch silently [yet some of those maybe weren't going to be released overseas, but who knows? SPECULATION!]

It's not a matter of whether it's going to happen or not, it's a matter of WHEN. Everything points to "in a few years", up to this day. We'll see.

ADDENDUM: In the meantime, we all shall enjoy more "further improvements to overall system stability" for a little while longer! So....

*STABILITY INTENSIFIES*

Another code name for "we will try to disable the usage of cfw"?
I really hope something good will be done.

Probably not.

Just hack and CFW combatting updates.
3DS is hacked to bits, Nintendo should focus on drastically hiding keys in that reside in the Switch.

Remember when Nintendo released updates that actually added new stuff?
Actually, not really. I remember the time when they added something cool, themes for the Home menu. Another real feature they added was Amiibo support, except that for the number of times I used Amiibos, I could live without that.
Other than this, when did they add an actual feature people actually cared about?
