Metroid: Samus Returns announced for 3DS

Nintendo isn't out of announcements, even after their Spotlight, it seems, as a new game was revealed during their Treehouse. Metroid: Samus Returns is a reimagining of the 1991 title Metroid II: Return of Samus.

Developer MercurySteam will be handling the game, and are known for developing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. It'll release on Semptember 15.

Ugh. We shall not speak of other m.

Only thing federation force had going for it, was that it's fps controls we're about the best ever on a standard 3ds console. Nothing else has ever moved or operated that well for me on the system.

I'm still surprised that nintnedo would go back to old school Metroid, since they were so convinced that Other M did well for selling well in Japan (though it bombed everywhere else, especially once word got out about how shit it was).

I would rather Other M be retconned and deemed non canon. I for sure don't want that prick responsible for the IP to then do like Ridley Scott and make a follow-up that breaks established canon in earlier and better games (movies) to make the shitty one canonical (looking square at alien covenant on that one).:gun:

Other M wasn't that bad, it was just the beginning of the game that was bad. It gets better later on gameplay wise.

I also thought it wasn't bad. I had fun playing it. The only thing I can remember that I didn't like was the story and how you weren't alone and isolated.

other M- I was fine with the cut scenes.....they didn't shatter my image of Samus as many seem to complain about. Much criticism seems to be on the story telling.

The part of Other M I didn't like was the stupid pixel search parts of the game.

Other than that it was pretty fun.

Not that bad?! Are we even talking about the same game?

Other M does for the Metroid timeline what Prometheus did for Alien, or what the Hyrule Historia book did for Zelda. It absolutely is a bastardization of everything that was good about the franchise. And the entire reason that Nintendo will still defend Other M, is because:
  1. The guy that is responsible for the Metroid franchise presently, refuses to understand why people disliked Other M, despite the man-years of videos dissecting it on YouTube and other related sites.
  2. Other M sold better than any other entry in the franchise in Japan
  3. As we know how such companies operate, board of directors from such companies are basically fuck everyone that isn't Japan in terms of how business decisions are affected.
Other M tried to have it both ways: they tried to make it an origins story, and tried to have it link between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. It can't possibly work this way, without completely splintering the fuck out of the timeline. And if Mario can have a concise and focused timeline across his mainline games, Samus Aran and Metroid sure as hell can.

then maybe you should judge a game based on graphic alone, and be grateful the game exists at all.
Judge graphics alone? Nope not gunna do that. I will judge both graphics and gameplay.

If Capcom does that I hope Sega doesn't follow suit and bring us Sonic exe.

Yea but graphics are like a DS game, we have Resident evil revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3D on the 3DS, even Xenoblade on the New3DS, they could do the game look better or with 2D HiRes graphics at least.., i mean we have seend amazing 2D games on 3ds and I totally love Samus on 2D, AM2R looks more inmersive than this.
I will definitely buy it but it looks like an enhanced N64 game or a very very bad Gamecube multiplatform game, and I mean, its a First Nintendo IP... is not some 3rdParty game.

All 3DS marios look awesome, all kirbys looks awesome, Smash bros for 3DS looks perfect Why not making a good looking metroid, since it was one of the Nintendo IPs with best graphics on all her consoles.

Oh Ya, for sure I'm getting this game. I've been wanting a Metroid game that was like the second where the main focus is to kill all the different Metroids.

I dont like the design of the Zeta (I hope is not an Omega) metroid shown on the treehouse gameplay it looks sleek and thin, not like the menacing Omegas that were shown on the art of the Metroid 2 Manual or even metroid fusion.

Does this look menacing?, It looks like an alien dog more than a metroid.

Why this game couldnt be developed by R&D1/Nintendo EAD?...

Mario's and kirbi's have a different art style, it doesn't a lot power to run those games, a fair point with revelation, I really hope it is because they are aiming to 60 fps, and those monster have a rapid movement, anyway on my 3ds this game looks amazing, the lightning is beautiful and it has vibrant colors, I can see the low polygon counts, but it doesn't need to many to a 240p screen and with a 2d game, for me is on par with other m with such beautiful graphics at a lower resolution, you have to remember it has the 3d feature, something that a ps2 doesn't have to handle, the 3ds is weaker than that. According of past history of that studio, they have a solid performance on their games.

Metroids are inspired for the alien franchise, it makes more sense in that way

Solid performance? Did you even play Mirrors of fate? The game ran on my 3ds like at 15fps or so and with 3D turned on is near not playable without having a headache. Yes, marios and kirbys have more simplistic art style but they manage to make them look good and timeproof. Also MGS3D has better textures and poly than Ps2 Version of MGS3 even it doesnt has the FPS loss on the swamp zones that the Ps2 suffers, If I remember it right, 3ds is like a less powerfull Gamecube which was better than the PS2 on CPU&GPU and new 3ds is like between a Gamecube and a Wii, we could mention: kid icarus uprising, smash bros , Monster hunter 4 and Generations, even tri ultimate.

They could unlock like a hidef texture or more polygon mode when played on a new 3DS at least, like the monster hunter games do, they look far better on new 3ds and have better framerate.

Yes, marios and kirbys have more simplistic art style but I could say that the poly count on Super mario 3d land 1 and 2 is superior than this game. Kirby planet robobot sometimes it plays at 30fps with the 3d on when it is aiming at 60 on the o3ds, I guess they have to make some sacrifices in order to run on the hardware, anyway games normally are cockblocked to the weaker iteration, this time is the o3ds, I didn't see any page if mirrors of fates is aiming to 30 or 60 fps, I only saw about a castlevania game on the 360 of that studio in the digital foundry side, so samus returns could have frame rate issues or have a solid performance, but the 3ds is weaker than a gamecube, that's a fact and the games looks worse than on the GameCube

Btw I researched a lilttle bit, the game is focused on "solid 30fps", so we have trash graphics with 30fps there you go. I can't believe AM2R was cancelled because of this game, I bet the game is like 1year or less of development, lazy texture work (textures on Kirby, MGS3d,MariLand, Monster hunter etc are better) , lazy design, only focused on Matrix / Other M like fighting style, with weird physics for Samus while traveling the map (her feet stand horizontal on downhill) weird feeling when watching her droping down in a vertical corridor.

Buuuuut i have to buy it since it is my most favourite saga and also I have to criticize the games, and I think an important saga as Metroid deserved more quality on a game like this.

Apparently it is 30fps, anyway a fucking metroid coming to a system I have, I like the music and sfx, different mechanics were added in comparison to the original, so glad they opted for a realistic looking, I don't think it will be a masterpiece like it was metroid prime 1, but I have the same feeling for metroid prime 4, is so great I can play every single metroid created besides the trilogy and other m in the 3ds
