He's stuck on a 3ds with a very outdated version of luma3ds (an a9lh version) and he's always asking me for help. He used to give me his 3ds at school for me to modify at my house, then I gave it back the next day. However, since school is out, we can't do that anymore. Is there any way I can try to convince him to start doing it on his own?

Tell him his 3DS will get remotely bricked by Nintendo using the RB-L3NS protocol if he doesn't update. It won't, of course, but don't say that until much later.

I second this, I imagine my version of Luma is likely outdated too as I installed a9lh several months ago.

For casual users, there's no immediate reason to update Luma3DS, and there's no immediate reason to update to boot9strap. Unless a problem arises, wait until school resumes to look at his 3DS.

No, it's just that he wants to update very badly and I'm tired of always doing it for him. I should also add that he asks me for help on every little thing relating to hacking, even if it isn't updating/installing a cfw.

What does he want to update, and why? If he's not tech savvy enough to do any of this himself, then he shouldn't be tech savvy enough to understand any reason to update Luma3DS and/or install boot9strap.

Instead of crying on temp, you could tell him to man up and do it.
Give him an ultimatum and only then he will start to learn. Otherwise he doesnt need to since he has his update-slave

He wants to update Luma mainly, but a lot of other little programs too. He first learned about the 3ds hacking scene when he saw me using hbl on my 3ds. Mainly I have installed the hacks on his 3ds, and he hasn't really done much except use it.

FBI is updated through the app with one click, freeshop is updated automatically..also tell him to fuck off lol. If I were you, id tell him to piss off or do it himself

Then you don't have to give him any other reason for not updating his system other than you don't want to.

Tell him all of the important apps auto-update, and there's no reason to manually update anything else. You can look at it when school resumes.

Then a simple "I'm not going to do it until after school resumes because there's no need to update anything" should suffice.

If hes savvy enough to turn on the 3ds, hes savvy enough to click that ''UPDATE'' button in FBI or click on the FreeShop and let it update.

There's no reason for him to update Luma3DS, and an A9LH-compatible Luma3DS has been retired anyway.
