How to put 3DS in "Incognito" mode with GodMode9

Incognito mode in modern browses is a special mode where your browsing history is not recorded.

The recent ban wave that hit CFW users is believed to have happened due to custom made CIAs installed and run from the 3DS Home Menu.

After that, some people who didn't get banned started being more cautious. Aside from disabling Spotpass and Friendlist "Playing" options I've been avoiding to run any custom made CIAs on my 3DS.

The new Luma 8.0 with HBMenu2.0 helped a lot with this, since the apps run throught it don't get logged if you use the set app entry point option.

But there are some apps that don't have a 3dsx version or don't work very well. This is an option I started using for those cases.

What is needed
  • CFW
  • Godmode9
What does this do?
  • We will rename the PTM savegame so the system creates a new one without the previous information of your used titles.
  • This way, any CIA Homebrew run during this window of time will be logged in this temporary PTM save and won't affect your previous PTM save.
Why would I do it?
  • I do it to leave my activity log and PTM "clean", looking like a retail unit.
WARNING: READ THIS BEFORE STARTING
  • IF YOU CHANGE THINGS OTHER THAN THOSE WRITTEN HERE WITH GODMODE9 YOU MAY BRICK YOUR SYSTEM.

STEP BY STEP

TURNING "INCOGNITO" MODE ON

  • 1. Boot into GodMode9.
  • 2. Select "[1:] SYSNAND CTRNAND"
  • 3. Select "data"
  • 4. Select the id of your system (32 characters hexadecimal folder name)
  • 5. Select "sysdata"
  • 6. Select "00010022" (This is the PTM save data folder)
  • 7. You will find a single file named "00000000" there. Hold R then press X, this will prompt you to rename the file. Rename it to "10000000" (You will be asked to unlock writing to SYSNAND CTRNAND).
  • 8. Press START to reboot the system.
  • 9. DO NOT OPEN THE ACTIVITY LOG DURING THIS TIME (If you do it'll merge your temporary PTM data with your activity log save data).
  • 10. Install and/or launch any CIAs needed. Use them to your heart's content. (Remember to keep Wifi turned off just to be safer).
Please note: Any game time played during this time frame will not be added to your activity log unless you run the activity log during the "incognito" mode. Again, please do not do that. You will make me cry.

TURNING "INCOGNITO" MODE OFF
  • 1. Finish using your homebrew CIA. Optional: Uninstall every custom CIAs before proceeding.
  • 2. Turn the 3DS OFF and boot GodMode9.
  • 3. Select "[1:] SYSNAND CTRNAND"
  • 4. Select "data"
  • 5. Select the id of your system (32 char hexadecimal folder name)
  • 6. Select "sysdata"
  • 7. Select "00010022" (PTM save data folder)
  • 8. There will be 2 files inside the folder. Navigate to the "00000000", press X confirm to delete it. You will be asked to unlock SYSNAND writing.
  • 9. Navigate to the "10000000" file. This is your original PTM save file that we renamed earlier.
  • 10. Hold R and Press X to rename. Rename it to "00000000"
  • Press START to reboot the system.
  • Profit.

So aslong as I don't use the activity log while using incognito mode,my homebrew apps won't be recorded.Interesting
So you don't lose your mii plaza stuff with the method in the link? -> ( https://gbatemp.net/threads/activity-log-reset.429082/#post-6405182 )
When I reset the activity log with deleting these files with GodMode9, if I open the activity log it will be empty, like I bought the system today? will this sound any alarm to Nintendo servers?
Can I then use the "Incognito mode?"

Thanks
you could just back up the 2 files by renaming them and it would do the same thing if you are worried.Once the system creates a new 00000000 files when you reboot, you are in the incognito mode as long as you don't open the activity log.

I am on 11.4 b9s luma 7.1, do I clear my ptm and activity log and and than I play some legit cart games to fill the activity log so I isn't completely empty so if Nintendo sees it they see one or two games in the log and than I use the incognito mode forever, is it possible

May sound stupid, but is there a way to delete the actual activity log system app?I mean, I would leave my sysNAND alone, and set Luma to boot from emuNAND so what would happen if you deleted it?

You might be able to delete the app itself, but I'm pretty sure the system would still be keeping an activity log behind the scenes, you just wouldn't have a way of viewing it.

I guess you could just delete it in FBI on the titles part. The thing is its installed on the NAND so make shure you make a NAND backup before testing it.

What we really need is for CFW like Luma to implement features to not send data to Nintendo, not log anything, or send a dummy "clean" log to Nintendo. The only way for Nintendo to know CFW is in use is that they are receiving data from the 3DS itself. since CFW can have new things now like the Rosalina stuff Luma added, a CFW service could run that spoofs or blocks data sent to Ninendo. that would fix the issue completely since the data is generated and sent from the 3DS of which CFWs now have near complete control over.

I can't see them doing that in the future, as they don't want to tick off Ninty. Instead, use a DNS (or block their servers in a different way) and turn off every option that sends data to Nintendo.

Nothing much luma could do to hide anything from nintendo.
You have to patch things pretty deep into the firmware (nintendo's). As in, manipulate each and every packets sent to the servers, which is kinda out of luma's scope.
Just blocking packets isnt enough since the 3ds only needs 2 addresses to be able to play online. The rest of the addresses are insignificant, in the context of getting flagged by nintendo.

conntest.nintendowifi.net
nasc.nintendowifi.net

Your 3ds can function well, including online play, with just these 2 being whitelisted (while blacklisting the rest of nintendo.net and nintendowifi.net, of course). As stated by previous people who have sniffed their 3ds, these 2 addresses request all those details that if incriminating, would warrant a flag from nintendo.

How do you hide the homebrew inside a cia
find a small dummy game from the eshop decrypt it and then unpack it. unpack the homebrew cia then make a new CIA that uses the code.bin/romfs form the homebrew and use the dummy game's banner/icon/titleid. its basically what the Heath and Safety injection program does, but it rebuilds to cxi, i just took that base and had it rebuild to CIA in the last step.

This thread should be in the 3ds ban thread imho, and another thing I deleted the activity and ptm and icon caches with cathulu and it seems everything is wiped as activity log is showing empty its only showing the two cart games I played later on, now do I switch to incognito mode and keep it on for 2-3 days or do I have to get out of the inco mode every time I switch off the console.

It's best to just turn in on when you need to run some CIA then turn it off right away.

RE Luma trying to turn off "Send Ninty Data":
They'd have to literally watch all Nintendo Network data being sent and rewrite it.

Don't forget that simple things like paid games that you get from freeShop that go online will login to Nintendo Network and it tells Nintendo:
  • Device cert
  • MAC
  • Serial
  • Console ID
  • Game ID
  • If the game is being ran from digital or cartridge
The last one is a theoretical way they check; check the console ID and find out what games they own on eShop. Do they own this game? If not, how do they have it in any other way but hacks?

I checked on the NNID and they have the log files of the dlc we download from freeshop but didnt find the games which i downloaded from freeshop, is it advisable to delete the nnid

CIA games as long as they are not out of region should be fine.
The problem is CIA homebrew.

Remember the PSN Ninja app that just cleared everything it knew was bad and changed the PS3 app history to r/o? We need an app that applies that same concept temporarily instead of manually applying it in this way.

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
