Or is it just a popular myth promoted by natural health groups?
About everything natural health group says is crap
for example their "detox" thingy is complete bs, if you had so much toxins in your body, you'd be dead
thus the reason you have kidneys, just eat healty, drink enough water and do sport regularly and your body will get rid of your few toxins by itself
it isn't about eating a salad or one garlic once in a time, it is about having an overall great life habitude and an healthy lifestyle

That^^ your kidneys and liver should be doing all the heavy lifting. If you see "NEW SUPER FOOD DISCOVERED!!1!11" or "CLEANSE YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM WITH NEW SIMPLE TRICK" it's 150% bullshit

Do you know what they call alternative medicine that's been proven to work? Medicine.

Is it possible that cilantro aka coriander contains a substance which somehow works to get one or more heavy metals (heavy metals covers several different metals and while they often operate in similar manners they are never the less different substances and may necessitate a different approach) out of a body? Sure. In such a concentration range that it is useful? Sure. In consistently within concentration ranges regardless of age and preparation method* as to be useful? In such a way that eating it still allows it to reach the affected areas of the body? Sure.
Does there appear to be a shred of evidence for this? No, no randomised controlled trials (harder to do here though), no animal tests, no lab tests. I will have to go looking to see if a consistent pattern between otherwise healthy populations subsequently diagnosed with heavy metal poisoning and treat in the two ways shows any clinical difference. Again this is harder and we don't have any nice groups like the anti vaccination cretins to look at.

*when I am cooking with it the means by which I cut it can quite radically alter the taste, as it can with many herbs. While it may not be the aromatic compounds that are responsible for the taste and smell I would still have to wonder.

If you or someone you has ingested heavy metals to the point it is or will bother them then go speak to a medic, bonus is the Chelation therapy that will probably be prescribed for it is actually well liked within "alternative" medicine where they think it might cure cancer, autism and other things. Though get a proper one as again different agents will be used depending upon the metal, and concentrations thereof, that is present in the body.

Very few herbs or plant based remedies actually work... Some do of course Aspirin being one of the more well known kinds that actually do work.

Herbal "cures" have too many variables in my opinion to be taken seriously.

Edit: Also Cilantro has a genetic component with regards to enzymes and what not, if it tastes like soap to you, you lack an enzyme in your saliva that would make it taste awesome I guess (It tastes like soap to me)

Well depending on what you're talking about, the digestive thingy works. There's a short diet made of seeds and tea that helps to clean your insides. But imho, anyone who wants to start a diet should ask his doctor first, because a diet is not something small, even if we don't see it or feel it it puts a lot of stress to the body. There's a nice book about the effects of your digestive system on your body called "Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ", written by Giulia Enders if you're interested in guts :P

That is not a rational argument. It's possible to have lots of toxins in your body and still be alive.

https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/heavy-metal-poisoning/

Liver and kidneys do their best, but overworking them can cause damage.

It tastes great anyway if you use it properly, so it's not like you're losing anything.
Yeah i use it sometime when i cook but my point is that if you were in a point where you are poisoned, it isn't some cillantro that will help you and thou should rather see a doctor
plus there isn't any proof that it have effect on metal poisoning nor that it helps your kidneys or liver
so it just stays a good seasoning herb

Noone knows herbs better than pharmacists. They will spend a considerably large part of their studies learning any plant there is, its ingredients and its applications. In fact many if not most drugs are just herbal components in a purified and compressed form. There is no plant or anything else that "natural health groups" know has any healing power, that pharmacists don't know about. Also, coming from someone who does his PhD in Chemistry, most people engaged in what they call natural healing or alternative medicine don't know the first thing about heavy metals or chemistry in general. Just two days ago I had to convince a woman that fluoride by itself is not a chemical compound and that there is a difference between aluminium hydroxide, aluminium chloride and metallic aluminium. Ironically many people in the scene actually believe aluminium to be a heavy metal. I could go on for hours with stories like that.

As FAST6191 already quoted, alternative medicine that works is called medicine.

I've heard that aluminum deposits in the brain over time because the body can't process it. Would be useful against long term issues like that if it were true.

That is literally what I just talked about. Aluminium is not a heavy metal. In fact it is one of the lightest metals and if we exclude alkali metals, alkine earth metals and metalloids, Aluminium is the lightest "true" metal there is.

Oh shit, I didn't read your post. I'm going to have to look this up to see what they're referring to. If they mean literal heavy metals your looking at removing things the body actually uses like iron and zinc.

I don't know about where you live, but when you go to the doctor in the uk suffering from the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning then they just put it down to old age and don't take anything seriously.

Supposedly it was a Doctor that found it had that effect, the problem is that big pharma pushes all the advice given to other Doctors. So unless someone figures out how to make money out of people eating coriander for it's health benefits, then there aren't going to be any large scale studies.

There is also debate whether the coriander could be giving you more heavy metal, because if it's grown in polluted soil then it will be cleansing the soil but dumping it in you. Plus there is a theory that it doesn't necessarily get rid of it from your body and can just move the heavy metals around & you need to take other things to make sure it's extracted.

Mercury fillings are poisoning a lot of people, but nobody does anything about that because it doesn't actually kill you.

Nah from an objective point of view it is pretty obvious that it ain't gonna do anything
Your body don't work like that

Geez, I wonder how people know they have a heavy metal poisoning, when it wasn't diagnosed by a doctor, obviously. Could it be an internet based self diagnosis? But sure, a doctor who studied medicine for nearly a decade and possibly has several decades of work experience should take any hypochondriac seriously because he read something on the internet.

Supposedly it was a Doctor that found it had that effect, the problem is that big pharma pushes all the advice given to other Doctors.

That is not how science or medical science works. Not at all. If supposedly some doctor found some healing effect of some plant, that hasn't been described before, and he has evidence to support his claims, he would publish an article in a peer reviewed journal. As I have written before, most pharmaceuticals contain herbal compounds in a purified and compressed form. If coriander is a potent antidote to heavy metal poisoning, the specific chemical compound that binds the heavy metal atoms (by building an organic heavy metal complex) would be identified and a new pharmaceutical would be designed, intensively tested and finally marketed. Given that there seem to be many people who believe themselves to be poisoned by heavy metal, I suppose it would be an easy financial success.

Plus there is a theory that it doesn't necessarily get rid of it from your body and can just move the heavy metals around & you need to take other things to make sure it's extracted.

As has been written before, that is not exactly how your body works. Who comes up with these theories, anyway? Is there any single person with a scientific education involved?

On another note, with all this poisoning going on, how do you explain the ever growing life expectancy?
