Hacking PS3 Hacking Support for PS2 and PS1 as of late?

I haven't gotten a PS3 yet as I'm waiting for compatibility to improve, is there anyone still working on improving compatibility for consoles prior to the PS3 or is this as good as it's going to get?

Also, that list that was linked, I saw it was for PS2 Classics but does that count for the normal ISO's across the board? IE, is that the full compatibility for the PS3 so for or for just the newer PS3 consoles that have to rely on emulation rather than real hardware?

Yeah. It's the equivalent to the POPS emulator for PS1 games on PS2. They got it to the point where it was compatible enough with a few hand picked games they wanted to sell, then realised that it wasn't worth the hassle.



Either yours is compatible or you haven't tested many games. I have only tested one game so far and it failed on a slim and worked fine on my DECHA00A. I haven't found a cheap CECHC or DECHJ yet.

yeah I've played the 4 onimusha games till the end and no problem at all, when I've to change disc for last game, it works too, my ps3 version is a slim version

PS2 Classics and ISOs are the same thing. Classics are just a container that include the iso and other metadata loke the Icons etc. Basically like the EBOOT.PBPs on PSP that hold the PS1 ISOs for POPS.

Sony is the only one who could improve that list. This emulator was only meant for the few PS2 Classics they offered on the PSN Store. The fact that other games work is pure luck. There are a few altered configuration files on the devwiki that can get some games to work like Silent Hill. Afaik there was a dude that released a programm that can help you modify these config files but I don't remember the name and iirc nobody ever looked deeper into it because there is only so much you can do.

The compatibility is actually pretty good for more popular games even looking at the list posted, seems like there are a bunch of problems with more obscure games.

Well it's not THAT bad ... when I said it's not great, it was a comparison to the models that had the PS2 hardware built-in. Looking at that list you can see that the majority of titles (or the major titles) seem to work.
If you want the best of the best in one console, then you should get a CECHA/B. If you are after PS2 titles only, I'd recommend a PS2 FAT with a HDD adapter (or a Slim which can be modified to have a HDD connection).

Oh, it is old. We need to update it because Klonoa 2 doesn't lag during the title screen because Cobra already update to improving last year.

Before Cobra hadn't improved it and I have had a bad experience with Klonoa 2 crashes at The Ark after you had to turn 3 engines on to get the airship to keep going.. At the third Engines is working, and get the 6th star then nter a room with a crystal blocking your path. Suddenly.. the screen turn black and thats it. It was before Cobra update and I haven't try it just yet. Maybe Cobra update last year could improve this game. Again, I haven't try it yet but I will. I also will update this compatibility list as well in the near future.

Anybody here should update this list to let people know how far your PS2 games can go and perhaps complete the game 100%. It would be nice.

I don't know from which FW this compatability list is, but I'm sure it's old since this ps3devwiki is a mess.

I was thinking of doing that, modding a PS2 to play the games on it but you are very limited by HDD drive space which wouldn't work for me either as I have well over the HDD size limit.

You can install a 2TB drive in the PS2, which should be enough for an entire set of one region (NTSC-U for example).

What? I was watching a video on it and the guy said the the limit was like 120gb or something.

Edit: Nevermind, I discovered the joy of the SATA Network Adapter by Gamestar. Will be going down that route with a 2TB Seagate Sata drive.

I don't remember the exact sizes, but the HDD size is limited by software. Officially the PS2 only supports something called 24Bit LBA (logical block addressing) which results in a maximum size of 128GB iirc.
The homebrew PS2SDK however does support 48Bit LBA, which in theory goes way beyond 2TB, but that again is limited by something else.

You can see a lot of problems with the GameStar adapters on youtube. Also the ethernet port on them is just for show, they do not work and trust me, you'll want a working ethernet port, as it's total BS to uninstall the HDD everytime you want to copy over a new game to it. There is a HDD Server/Client management software for the PS2 and the PC, so you can transfer new games over LAN.

I hate to resurrect this thread after all this time but I recently re-lit the fire I had for this project and I wanted to clarify this once and for all. If your PS3 has a PS2 chipset inside then it will provide 100% compatibility for all PS2 games via an external HDD?

We've also established that all PSX games will work via an external HDD regardless of the console?

If it is one of the older PS3s with hardware support GS/EE built in than yes, PS2 compatibility is the same

PS1 compatibility is the same on all units.

Keep in mind the older units, especially the 60gb CECHA01 and 20GB CECHB01 run hotter, are already old and are more likely to YLOD than newer units.

All of them, through software emulation, have partial compatiblity with PSP games too ...
