PS: TL;DR go to the red question
So i'm a linux guy, but there is something that is anyoying me a lot lately
see, touchscreen are appearing about everywhere now and a lot of devices have one
some devices even have a touchscreen as the only way to "talk" to it (ex phones, tablets, smartwatches)
but we find more and more 2 in ones to (ex surfaces linupe and their knockofs), windows tablets etc..

I like microsoft's hardware and i love the tablet form factor
the thing is they don't run on linux
but they all could ...

So why don't i or anyone else install linux on them
-> linux isn't touch friendly AT ALL !
even though it do support touchscreen inputs

So as a dev i though it was possible to fix that but i ain't gonna work for such a big thing that i will be the only one to use / develop
Plus all linux DE feel old and crapy

So here is the question :
Is anyone interested as an open source desktop / windows environment which's main goal is to be touch friendly, visually appealing and modern and can be used confortably (aka without any hassle) only by using a touch screen but work as well without one ( as any other de)

Its main goal will be :
- Touch support and touch oriented (Should be more touch friendly than android, every action should be doable using only the touchscreen but also time gaining, so it would take less time using touch than using mouse and keyboard on a normal de)
- Minimalist
- Flat design (by default but optional)
- Modern UI and visually appealing
- Customisable
- Scriptable
- A normal version with nice visual effects
- Another version as low on ressources as possible but with still the core fonctionalities

And of course :

- No bloatware, just the necesary
- The least possible dependencies
- Lightweight

- A funky name and logo

Developed in C or C++

Isn't that what Unity was trying to achieve?
Yeah but unity was a shell on top of gnome and was crapy and old
My goal as metioned are a modern DE made from scratch and with GOOD touch support

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Touch support shouldn't be something that jus work but is a hassle but something that work great and that could be used as the only input
but i should precise
multi touch support with touch gestures
ex you could move and resize a windows with 3 fingers
launch a program (via touch program launcher) with a double 3 finger tap
on screen keyboard, swiftkey like but with linux commands and their action in the dictionary
ect...
the keyboard have as goal to be modern
swipe enabled
and have linux commands in its dictionary with their option and there whatis database so using the terminal with touchscreen isn't a hassle but a confortable experience

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

With this you could use a tablet on linux more easily than on android
and the terminal as easily than with a keyboard

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The point is to have any android tablet but with linux on it as usuable as on android + having all linux terminal features and programs

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And with some scripting you could bind touch gesture to keyboard / mouse ones globaly or per program to be able to use touch gesture on un touch friendly programs
ex :
- using a left/right swipe to change the time in the mpv video player
- Up / left double swift to scroll on firefox
ect...
and have an, users maintened database installable with ot without a gui to had those script to the core
so if someone made an mpv compatibility script, others could just download it with the builtin gui
or manually via terminal

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

In brief it will be modable

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And as for time to be as i want it to be count a year but i would continue to work on it so it stay modern
but i'm not doing it if no one is interested thus the reason why i ask

are you stupid?
GNOME Shell is what you need!
https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.14/touchscreen-gestures.html.en
It also has a IOS like (gtk3 only) zooming in on text if touched for long
it also has an automatic touchscreen keyboard which pops up when you touch text from a GNOME app, otherwise you can slide from bottom edge to manually bring out keyboard. It also has themeing capabilities. it is also customizable from extensions. it also uses Wayland.

SECOND ONE is Sailfish OS from Jolla. this one is for phones though. It reinvents multitasking by making the multitasking menu the homescreen and the tiles having buttons on them, like widgets. whats more, it uses Wayland, and you can ssh into it and do shit, as it also has a package manager. it is fully open, but uses propreitory code for running Android apps natively inside it.

I know all DE ive lived with each for months or years
nah gnome is crapy, old, bloated and slow
and "touch friendly" but not really like you can use a touchscreen but it is a pain in the ass and i have to say even windows 10 handle it better
let alone android

That's why i propose to develop a new de for scratch wich goals are to be even more confortable to use with a touch screen than android
did you read the goals ?

Sailfish os is quite dead and is an os not a de^^

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The point is that since i plan to develop a de you could install whatever linux on whatever touchscreen devices and use it without any hassle with it

no ones gonna develop a NEW DE just for a user on GBAtemp. there already are so many, it's becoming bloated, and GNOME is already working towards that goal. they make take time, but it will be much quicker than you building your own DE "magically"

and where did you capture that absurd idea of Sailfish os dieing? it is very much alive!!

I can help if you want.
Well i will create a git in about a month, i have my final exams in the end of this one and i have to prepare myself
It will be in C or C++ depending of the library i will use
but i think i have higher chance of being in C for maintaining reason and since as i said, i want to use the least possible library
also before i have to read a lot of doc concerning wayland / x11
i'm aint gonna write my own display server or am I ?
