It will be never sorted out because another thing exists on another platform.
You got that from the RA thread, yes? The reasoning given by the GBATemp hivemind isn't necessarily the actual reasoning, you know. The same people also provided reasons and guarantees that a kernel/IOSU/coldboot exploit would never happen. I'm waiting for them to start doing it with boot1!

OP: I'm really busy with projects, and so are the other, three-ish people actually doing Wii U stuff. DVD support (if it's possible with the Wii U's drive) would definitely be a media player thing, when somebody gets around to that.

You can watch movies from USB/SD, but there's no way DVD movies will ever work, the drive is designed to only read encrypted Wii/Wii U discs.
There's also the option of streaming videos from a media server using the browser.

If you have MP4 files, you can dump a game like New Super Mario Bros. or something with ddd, replace some of the MP4 files it uses for demos and watch them by loading the game with Loadiine. I did this a while ago, it's actually really cool.

Yeah, but, it depends what model and the serial of the number of the Wii you got. As long as is not 2010 or 2011 new Wii. If you have the Wii with D3 or less it will play DVD movies on the Wii old disc drive. If you have Wii new chip, like D3-2 or D4, it won't play DVD movies on Wii new disc drive, you have to use USB external DVD for that. It has chart so it can help you (https://www.wiidrives.com/howto).

I don't know, but I wish somebody knows, I think you can run MP4 files on WiiMC, but you need to store MP4 files on SD card and USB flash drive.

I think there is a way to have the mp4 files on a disc that is formatted correctly, its been a long time since I've messed around with the wii though, I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there was a way.

Most people have phones & tablets with apps like VLC. Not to mention PC's or TV's with USB slots that have native playback... So I can't really see anyone going out of their way to produce something for yet another device.

The wii actually does a good job playing media, phones are great and all, if you like watching movies on the smallest screen ever.

You forgot about smart watches :P

(Anyway, as people can guess, I'm subscribed to this thread because I'm interested in that too if a dev wants to judge the crowd's interest before trying their hand at this project...).
