I apologize, but i recently changed the component with a new one and problem still occur...it still need some cold to boot
It must be another componet nearby.

Hiya, I've got the same error after buying a new Disc Drive and replacing the PCB.
I've tried to swap around some IC's, but the same error hunted me again.
I was googling around and found you mentioning about a faulty transistor.

Do you have any references about this component and where it is located ?

Many thanks

Hi,originaly, we thought it was this one: 20170429_194306 (FILEminimizer).jpg
We changed it. It worked for like 10-20 switch on, then it failed again... Now i got my wii u always opened with a cloth on it (for dust lol) and i apply in this area of IC's some cold spray then it start...
So weird...No one can explain to me why it behave like that...
Cheers.

Hiya !

Man a few questions :

Has the game worked with a replaced drive just after replacing the transistor you have mentioned ?

Because my console doesn't boot with its original drive you can check my journey here :

https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-160-1400-error-no-disk.407829/page-2#post-8292950

Anyway I'm going to check this transistor you've mentioned.

Many thanks.

Hi, you're welcome.

We did not try a new drive after replacing transitor, sorry.

But we tried that before changing transistor :

- replacing the entire dvd drive----> no go
- replacing little motherboard on original dvd drive with another new motherboard----> no go
- using new dvd drive with old little motherbord----> no go

Since you raised this thread from the dead, i have to ask you : why using cold spray do the trick ???

Cheers.

Hey guys,

I purchased a Wii U on eBay with the error 160-1400. I thought it was going to be an easy logic board transplant, but I still have the error. Note: the owner says she is non-technical so she did not open the unit and the original drive is still in there.

What I've done so far:
- Wii U with original drive gives error 160-1400. Also the disc does not spin when inserted.
- I bought 2 replacement drives on Amazon and swapped in the original logic board. Still the same error 160-1400.
- On a whim, I tried both replacement drives with their own logic boards. I *did not* get error 160-1402, so the drive itself is not the problem and not really being communicated with.

@PurPPle you mentioning the bad transistor is giving me hope that we can trace down the culprit. I tried to take some pictures of the SMD transistors and this was the best I could get.

Are these the right part numbers for the transistors in that area of the PCB?
Also where did you order new transistors from? Mouser or Digikey?

Hi,
I'am sorry. When i say we changed the transistor, i mean that we ask a specialist to do it for us (we do not have the right tool).

He just swapped the component from another Wii u motherboard (bricked one).

We did not use a new one, so perhaps it was going to die, worked for 15-20 switch on, so...i don't know

I have limited knowledge on electronics, i can't help on part number, but your link could be usefull, thank you.

I can't confirm UA with a minus...i can see UA, but with no horizontal or vertical minus, sorry. Perhaps it's a partially erased "t" ??

Do you know about the cold spray effect please ?

Thanks.

Do you know about the cold spray effect please ?

Perhaps the voltage going to the transistor is marginal and fails when it's too hot?

What method did you use to diagnose the bad transistor while it was in-circuit? I *think* my EU transistors (Q6 and Q7) are ok, but not sure on my UA transistor (Q8) yet...when my meter is in diode mode, I get a reading between Base and Emitter both directions. It is only supposed to be one direction unless I have the part number wrong.

Also I started testing fuses and caps all around the DVD connector (top & bottom of mainboard). All fuses are ok, but I've definitely found a bad capacitor on the underside (#C162)...has a solid tone with my multimeter set to diode.

Aside from getting a donor board, I have no idea what to replace it with. Anyone have a suggestion on how to find a part number? Or if anyone has a donor board, I'd gladly pay for a few caps.

based on markings on Q8, it's this component here: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Nexperia/BZB84-C2V7215?qs=sGAEpiMZZMuKA4j4J4t1TBorBgfSDkVE
which is according to datasheet is a Dual Zener Diode, and not a transistor, but i don't think it's right from what i'm getting from my board. And C162 capacitor shouldn't be grounded obviously (it should be ground on north side only), so I would just remove it and test it separately to see if it's the capacitor that is bad or the test point itself, which is linked to other components on the board that might be bad if it's still GND after removing it. It's linked to TP114 on the south side (to DVD board connector, pin 21) and goes through FIL19 (cont.), F10 and on the left side of C99 and R120

It's possible that the "UA" transistor is the NE66219/2SC5606 which is unfortunately obsolete.

Also the Q3, Q15, Q17 transistors ("48" marking) are probably these PDTC123E...not sure what package it is though.

I'm looking at broken consoles on eBay to use as a donor board. Hopefully I can find a cheap one soon.

I have a wii u with error 160-1400...
also I have another wii u bricked with black screen... swapping dvd drive... boards... etc... nothing works... always 160-1400
I am really sure the problem is in the motherboard
I dont have a way to test the transitors
but I know someone that could replace the transitor with the second wii u motherboard...
@testerfan are you sure it's really possible to be the Q8?
I could give it to him to try tonight if you are really sure its the Q8 one
he knows soldering stuff but he is kind of busy (maybe lazy) to try to find the issue of the wiiu

ok, so it's very easy to test transistors like this. Put your digital mulitimeter in diode mode (it also doubles as continuity mode on my tester you see on the picture, when probes are not touching each other it shows 1, when they touch/shorted - you get a beep and a 0 on the screen). Only when red probe is on top and black probe is on the right bottom leg - you get a reading (number), putting probes in any other combination won't give anything (will stay at 1), so that's how it's supposed to be on a working transistor. If you measure Q6 and Q7 - you will get different values on your reader, but only when probes are in the same combination, because it's the same type of transistors as Q8. if you get readings when probes are on different legs/combination or you a get a beep (shorted between two legs) - when the transistor is bad

Ok, I probed the SMD transistors that are on top of the mainboard by the DVD ribbon connector (Q6, Q7, Q8, Q3, Q15, Q17). Attached are my results (assumed all transistors were NPN).
Wii U DVD Transistor Test Results.png
The only one that seems odd to me was the Q8 transistor (UA type). I got a reading in Test 1 (B->E), while I was expecting to see something similar to Q6 and Q7. I know in-circuit testing is not ideal, but I'm not pulling anything off until I get a donor board. Let me know if your multi-meter supports similar readings.

So I got to thinking that maybe one of the SMD capacitors might be bad. I read through some online tutorials, but I found this guy's video helpful.

I found two odd ones, but again they are in-circuit so it's just a hint right now until I de-solder them. If anyone could test their boards and see if they have similar readings, please let me know.

  • SMD Capacitor C2 and C3
    • Location: On top of mainboard by the DVD ribbon
    • Finding: Neither side of the capacitor goes to ground.
IMG_9978.JPG
  • SMD Capacitor C6
    • Location: On bottom of mainboard under the CPU
    • Finding: Diode test shows continuity (steady beep) between sides. Also both sides go to ground.

Hi guys,

I've got busy and forgot to update this thread.

Alright, I have managed to partially fix error 160-1400/160-1402 replacing the IC you guys see in the pictures attached.

I'm saying partially fixed because although the console does not fail to boot with error 160-1400 anymore the DVD drive is not pushing disks.

@Pachee has suggested me to try replacing a few chips in a thread ( https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-160-1400-error-no-disk.407829/page-2#post-8331829 ) that might be where the DVD key is stored. To be honest I'm not willing to try at least not in this console because it means swapping a lot of IC's around and there are a lot of consoles waiting here to be fixed :rofl2:.

I have ordered a gamepad and I will be able to perform further tests in this unit and consequently update you guys however the idea with this unit is to unlock it and play games from a hard disk, so the faulty DVD drive won't be an issue at all. I'm pretty happy that I've got rid of the error and made into the system.

There is a video with some tips of how I have done unfortunately it had been recorded in Brazilian Portuguese and I would love to have English subtitled it, but as mentioned before I'm busy, but you guys can watch it and have a clue of what has been done.

I hope you guys fix your consoles.

Thanks and bye :yayu::grog:

Did you check if you soldered it properly? That chip seems to control the drive motors/lens and other stuff.
Also one of the 2 chips i mentioned in the other thread might be just related to the ram chip power, the other could be a serial flash.

Yeah I'll have to pick up one...looking at the MESR-100 V2. They're not cheap, soI might have to start trying to fix & resell Wii U's to pay for the cost of it. LOL

Im going to get one to check electrolyte caps in CRT Televisions. so i can service the ones i have. Id hate to have to removed each cap to test. ESR meter can test in circuit.
