Hi guys,

I have a Super Slim 500 GB PS3 which is up to date with OFW

I also have a 4.81.2 CFW 120 GB Slim

I am wondering if I can swap the two HD, making the Slim 500 GB with CFW

I dont mind losing any data during the process

Is it possible and what is the fastest, simplest way ?

(I know how to physically remove a HD)

For your HDD change. You need to format the 500GB HDD - and place the CFW Update PUP file, onto an USB stick.
Disable the Internetconnection, remove any game disc and replace the HDD. Start the PS3, stick the USB stick with the Update PUP into the right USB slot and start the PS3.
After that, you need to install the CFW again through USB.

It's not possible. The CFW is installed on the flash chips on the motherboard as well as the HD, even if you could move the flash chips as well then it still wouldn't work.

He just wants to swap the HDDs. Its possible and very easy.

@HitchensRIP sorry dude, that's not how it works...
the console has the firmware installed on a chip (NAND) inside the console.
you can even put an empty HDD on your phat console it will not lose the CFW
it's kinda like the 3ds console, you can swap out memory cards, it has no big effect to the CFW

I'm sorry to everyone that has replied, unfortunately what they're saying is incorrect.

I have upgraded my HDD on 3 different occasions on my CFW PS3.

You can swap the HDD, however; When you first put it in to your CFW PS3. The system will fail to boot, this is because it stores partial firmware on the HDD, for storing XMB content etc.

Steps:

Swap the HDD and install what ever HDD you want in to your CFW PS3.

You will need either the exact same CFW you have currently installed in the format of ps3updat.pup. Normal location as if you were doing a firmware update. PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP.

When machine is turned off, press the power button, keep finger on power button until you can hear it beep, then beep again and turn off.

Press and hold the power button again, it will beep once, then double beep, you are now in recovery mode.

Ensure you have the CFW PS3UPDAT.PUP on your USB stick.

Select system update at the bottom. This will install the CFW that is stored on your USB to your newly installed HDD.

Make sure it is the same version as what is installed on the previous HDD.

Now you're good to go and the PS3 will boot normally.

Disable the Internetconnection, remove any game disc and replace the HDD. Start the PS3, stick the USB stick with the Update PUP into the right USB slot and start the PS3.
After that, you need to install the CFW again through USB.

This is the correct method.

Let me see if I get this correctly:

a) Format the 500 GB HD which is in my Super Slim OFW - format it from the PS3 Super Slim itself
b) Put that same HD into the CFW Slim PS3 (with no need of backing up anything)
c) Install CFW PUP file from USB
d) Install Rebug + Toolbox + All that jazz
e) ??
d) Profit ?

(i am familiar with installing CFW as I did it 2 days ago, but wasnt sure re swapping HD)

Is it that that way ?

Ah shoot.

In the process of installing CFW, I had changed my CFW PS3 from CEX to DEX

Will I need the D-REX Edition or REX is fine ??

Much appreciated guys

Why did you switched to DEX? (Yes you need D-Rex if you switched)

In all honesty - I do not know!! :hrth:

I followed a YT tutorial to install Rebug cfw and it ended up with the dude switching from CEX to DEX so I followed suit

Then I spent 3 hours trying to figure out wtf was going on as multiMAN in DEX mode would not load backups xD

Any risk of bricking if I get the D-REX/REX files wrong upon booting up after format ??

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Let me get this clear cos im about to do it but i need your go ahead lol:

Originally I installed 4.81.2_REX

Then within there Toolbox I did
-Dump eid Rootkey
-Re write ID in flash
- Switch LV2 Kernel

In short - I think my PS3UPDAT.PUP must come from rebug D-REX

Am I correct ?
