So hi I come from the world of 3DS :). I CFW my 3DS w/ Luma A9LH, figured this console was awesome and I really like it, now I wanted a Wii U to catch up on all the Zelda's I've missed out since OoT. So I bought a certified refurb coming Friday from Nintendo for $200.

Now these guides are much more complex than the 3DS stuff especially on this forum, not that I am complaining I just obviously don't want a brick and I want the end result to be awesome just like anyone else?

Main purpose - I want to play Wii U games and be able to play online and maybe some backwards compatibility once I get brave, and DLC etc if possible...Wii U USB Helper and file transfer to my HDD I assume!?

So I ran across this https://wiiu.guide/, which also I followed for my 3ds version. Now with the 3DS its just luma luma luma, just use luma, but with this console there is a lot more options. I am not the advanced crazy user. I just want it to work and be able to play the Wii U games + online. So I assume I would go this route:
I'm not super cheap I'd buy a DS game for $6.99 or whatever just to make the entry process easier, so assuming that I would be installing Haxchi CFW. I assume this can do everything I'd like it to do?

When playing these backups... wth is the loadliine etc, what should I be looking for game wise? My single player only games like Zelda, doesn't matter if it can go online? But smash bros mario kart etc I'd like online play

Keep in mind please I have never booted up a Wii U at all, I am clueless to how it even functions. But I've used my 3DS for years... I plan to use a 1TB external HDD & the 32GB SD that comes with the console. My HDD should I allow the Wii U to format it, or should I delete partitions through a PC?

I know there are tons of guides etc etc and I am following them but I have some noob questions just looking for someone not to be a complete tool (I know its rare as I am as well a tool, especially once I've done it all and help other people).

So basically, should I follow the wiiu guide and go for Haxchi CFW and buy the DS game or whatever? I guess DS games are for Wii U, never knew. Again complete noob to this console. Also from expert who have been doing this a while - WHAT SHOULD I AVOID DOING. I don't want to buy a $200 paperweight =]

I'd like to prepared and ready to rock for when this comes!

also wtf is wii vs vwii? do I need to hack both

Loadiine is the older method of playing backups. It is outdated , has bad compatibility and games often take a long time to load. Using haxchii will allow you to run the homebrew launcher (HBL) without the need of having to use the webexploit to start the HBL. Haxchi is just a faster way, and 100% sure way of running HBL. The web exploit , once working usually always worked for me , but it requires you to launch your browser in order to start the HBL. So you should definitely spend the 7$ to buy a DS game.

Either way you decide to run HBL, you will be from now on using WupInstaller or any of its variants to install your games directly to HDD or NAND. This usually means grabbing your games directly from the nintendo servers using uTikDownloadHelper or the other similar programs. I prefer uTikDownloadHelper myself. As for online play, I'm pretty sure there are no issues as long as you don't cheat, but don't quote me on that, i've never played online on the wiiu. I'll let others help you with online.

Thank you :) so it sounds like I am on the right path with Haxchi being my CFW w/ HBL

using utikdownloadhelper, some games are red such as skyward sword, this game wont run regular on Haxchi will it? I quote another thread, now can you run iosuhax too to be able to get it all to work? -
  • The games in red will only work on a signature-patched home menu (iosuhax or redNAND both work

Haxchi is iosuhax. I guess it is referring to the fact that you could still install those games using the HBL that was executed from the webexploit, to install skyward sword via WUPinstaller. This means you could install the game without ever using haxchi , but it seems the game would not run. I don't really see these details because I use coldboot haxchi and run mochaFW (which patches all signatures and allows region free) on every boot. Again, I never play online so I can't say for sure if mochaFW is any safe online. I'm pretty sure it is, but pretty sure isn't a guarantee for you. Others can really guide you for this.

Haxchi itself is not iosuhax, what you run with it is (such as Mocha or the built in CFW, they both use iosuhax)

There are a lot of different guides on Wii U hacking these days and some of them are confusing, but it's really simple, actually it's way simpler than 3DS hacking.
Try this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-noob-guide-to-wii-u-hacking.451297/
If you find that too confusing, I have others I can suggest, that just seems to be the most recommended one.

You should probably avoid hacking your Wii U until you've done more research. Everything you've asked has been answered or talked about. You should also title your questions better to avoid smart ass answers like mine (and do some more research)
