Microsoft's Project Scorpio to use FreeSync and HDMI 2.1

After the spec reveal of Microsoft's upcoming console, Project Scorpio, more hardware information about it has been revealed. According to Eurogamer, Scorpio will be utilizing AMD's FreeSync, as well as HDMI 2.1. FreeSync is technology that allows for the removal of screen-tearing as well as reducing stuttering from unstable framerates. The console will implement the newer variation, FreeSync 2, which has support for HDR. The other inclusion, HDMI 2.1 uses VRR, variable refresh rate, another method of making games look as if they have a much smoother performance. You can read the in-depth and detailed report below.

Adaptive refresh technology like AMD's FreeSync completely eliminates tearing and reduces stutter significantly by allowing the GPU to trigger the display refresh instead of adhering to a hard and fast 60Hz cycle. Essentially, the screen produces the next image immediately after the GPU finishes rendering it. The technology was pioneered by Nvidia's G-Sync, but it's the open standard variants - FreeSync and the upcoming HDMI 2.1 implementation - that Scorpio aims to support. In fact, Microsoft has actually implemented the FreeSync 2 standard, meaning compatibility with HDR and full support across the range of potential frame-rates. Paired with a supported screen, this will even eliminate tearing on games running with adaptive v-sync with frame-rates under 30fps, something not supported on most FreeSync 1 screens (VRR range varied on a per-screen basis, with 40Hz to 60Hz commonplace).

I dont buy pre-built PC's Microsoft sorry
And the hardware is superior to r9 390x/ rx 480. You also won't see hdmi 2.1 any time soon.

I don't think you understand that freesync and gsync are competing standards that do the same thing, and that freesync monitors are significantly cheaper than gsync monitors. Or perhaps you don't understand that NVIDIA refuses to implement freesync into their drivers because they like the fees they get from gsync monitors.

Or perhaps you simply don't understand market forces causing companies to adopt standards against their will. It's ok, no-one understands everything.
Freesync are still better than your standard async and requires more support on the display end.

I get that, that's why I don't get why you think there's even a chance Nvidia would ever implement Freesync into their cards

The Jaguar x86-64 processor in the XBone is a standard PC architecture.

Sorry I speak the Queens English, not console fanboi.

Computer,
An electronic device which is capable of receiving information (data) in a particular form and of performing a sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions (program) to produce a result in the form of information or signals.

Claiming consoles aren't a computer with custom feature limiting software was the only "Gotcha".
So you're insisting on the archaic definition rather than the commonly accepted one. That's cute.

As for the architecture, it's irrelevant as it was previously mentioned, but you probably already know that. The amount of bits per word you sneakily put in there doesn't give you any credence either, x86 went through several extensions, from 16 to the now industry-standard 64, that by itself doesn't make it a PC. It's a "personal computer" for sure, but it's not a "PC" as the term is used today. Even the fact that it runs a Windows kernel doesn't - many routing devices run Linux in the background, that doesn't make them PC's either.

The conversation is hopeless since it's over semantics, so I won't continue it. There's a slew offers customisations in that box that make it specifically a console and differentiate it from an average pre-built PC. It's a device designed for a specific purpose rather than a general purpose computer, and I'll leave it at that.

FreeSync 2 works differently and will make monitors cost more, unlike regular FreeSync.

I think FreeSync is just implementing an optional part of the VESA spec, the variable refresh part.

This is scary. Consoles are almost on the PC level now. :rofl2:

Silliness aside, I think this is good. Freesync is good and finally we can use a cheap freesync monitor just for console gaming. I wonder if there will be a freesync TV or was there already one?

I want to say I saw one a while back. And if there aren't yet this will probably drive up demand for them

All Xbone titles and I believe backported 360 titles as well.
Nintendo = Ports, and backwards compatible with previous consoles; plus the library isn't filled with em'. Microsoft = Tons of ports, and old games either ported to the console or not. Their library is filled with them, and on top of that; not many good exclusives. Although, a lot of older games and ports are rather good titles, but they shouldn't be shoving them down your throat, and otherwise. I'd say Nintendo is the God when it comes to getting peoples heads to turn in terms of a gaming library. Although, not so much when it comes to raw power, but they still manage to turn some of those heads. For example, everyone thought the Wii was going to be poor; turns out that it was super successful. Even though it was only a Beefier GameCube. Power doesn't always mean a better console. Games is usually what makes a console great; and I am not seeing it with this new console thus far, but that might change. Although, the Xbone has flopped quite badly, and I feel like it may die off soon. Same for the Wii U, which has been dead. But, the PS4 and Switch seems to be going good; for now.

It doesn't mean the Scorpio will be as powerful as a PC, nor as expensive. It's just that they have a way to reduce screen tearing which wasn't needed for consoles much in the first place anyway, since 1) it's nigh impossible for most anything except a not-so-detailed 3D game to even reach 60 FPS and 2) useless for the common person because it is much harder for those playing consoles to find, no less care about a TV that hangs out frames with freesync anyway.

Consoles are always near PC when they launch, but PC always speeds past somehow.

Yeah, it's cute to think that power doesn't mean a dang thing in the market. And yes, it's "all about the games" rather than the console. But when your developer can't get the game running playable on your console, and/or it's a multiplatform experience available with better fidelity on another platform you own, you would obviously choose the other platform.

Let's take Breath of the Wild for example. The Switch version is a masterpiece. The Wii U version is trash. Why? Even walks in the city on the Wii U version get you near 20 FPS. Big battles have insane frame stutters and dips. The game is a good game, yes, but it's about the playability of the game. No matter what you may or may not admit, graphical fidelity will play a role in your game experience. If it's always choppy, it will be less enjoyable.

That being said, the PS4 and Xbox One had a lot of games, but not nearly as many exclusives as I would've liked. I will wait on the Scorpio for exclusives; otherwise, I'll play on my PC.

for who's interested freesync technology, it allows u to sync ur game's output fps on proper gaming monitor which support 60hz or above, it will make sense if only Scorpio is able to ran a game with >60fps and u have a proper 144hz or 240hz Freesync monitor.

There should be a law selling any hardware with an OS pre-installed unless specifically requested.

Free that market right up.

Maybe you should ask Microsoft if they will sell you an xbox one without an operating system and then sell you the xbox one operating system separately.

It would no longer pre-installed and so you'll be happy right?

Or maybe you don't understand the console market.

On par with PCs from 2010.

Show me a PC from 2010 that cost what scorpio is going to cost that has as good a cpu/gpu/ram.

The Jaguar x86-64 processor in the XBone is a standard PC architecture.

A CPU and an architecture are two different things. The original xbox had an x86 cpu but wasn't PC architecture.

It would be great if you could buy windows 10 for xbox one, but you wouldn't be able to play xbox one games on it anymore and they would need to cover the cost of porting windows 10 to it and make up for the subsidised hardware cost.

Guilty, the depth of the technically illiteracy that props up such a brick stupid platform in 2017 escapes me. But idiots shop at Rent-A-Center so I acknowledge they exist....
