Yes, that is the main difference. Ciangel is also faster to get new stuff as it depends only on the title key site while Freeshop also requires a cache to be updated which takes longer. Also, the developer of Freeshop is now in jail (on unrelated charges) and he is the only one with access to the cache and system that updates the cache so if that fails Freeshop will stop working until someone else can fork it and update the cache themselves.

I'm just going to drop this here...
That took a dive.
He did mention he had legal issues besides the DMCA, I guess that was it. That's just all kinds of crazy. :wtf:

He also mentioned someone else is going to be the lead dev for freeShop and he was going to just advise.

I guess someone else is maintaining the cache now. It seems to get regular updates.

Hi guys, the only difference is the gui, correct? Or do I miss something?
They work differently.
CIAngel uses json for their title key format. It also has the ability to download CIA, tik, or install. You can download or install titles using input.txt if you put title ID on first line and encrypted title key on second line. Only one title at a time.

freeShop uses bin for the title key format same as you'd get from the title key site or Decrypt9/GodMode9. It also relies on a cache for the GUI. So even if the encrypted title key is available, if it's not in the cache, you won't be able to install it. It can only install.

The cache is not maintained by anyone, it is automatically updated via script. Once the server running it goes down (And it will, Cruel can't exactly pay the hosting bill from prison) it will stop updating. The only person with write access to the cache repo is Cruel himself.

Couldn't whoever that's maintaining the code now have it point to a different server and setup a cache repo? Or does the script for the cache repo and format not available?

Technically, yes. Will they want to pay to host it? Maybe, maybe not.

If I get this correct, the download source is the same, but not the "key source"?

I just wondered, because I found different domains in the code.
I haven't looked at the code. Maybe @Drakia could tell you more about that. I think the devs might be using whatever Nintendo CDN server is closest to them, but I'm just guessing. I imagine Nintendo has bunch of servers scattered around the world that make up their CDN.

As someone who has always used CIAngel, is there even a reason to use freeshop? I mean CIAngel has the gaemz faster IIRC, so why use Cruel's app then? Having a choice is awesome, but I never understood why people liked it (more).

The GUI is nice and it's much easier to use than CIAngel, but more importantly you can browse the entire database rather than having to know exactly what you want beforehand and using the search function in CIAngel.
