Before Yooka-Laylee gets released I just want to discuss what bothered me the most

As someone who pledged to the kickstarter since its launch I want to get this off my chest and hopefully get a better understanding. What really rubbed me the wrong way even more than the Jontron event is how reviewers, news sources, gaming events, etc all got first dibs on playing the game and also getting news before people that pledged on kickstarter. I just don't understand how you can treat them like peasants when they helped fund the game in the first place but everyone else gets the red carpet rolled for them. That alone puts me off from wanting to help with kickstarter.

P.S. I even discussed this respectfully to the developers. Never got a response back (what a shocker.)

What exactly is your complaint about "news" being withheld from backers? I thought updates posted on a Kickstarter page were public, just like any other website, isn't that correct?

Not exactly. The updates are for kickstarter backers only and I'm not bothered if that gets shared. I'm upset that OTHERS get told first. I'm not that selfish with wanting news to myself but why do backers get 2nd fiddle on anything regarding the project. That doesn't seem morally right.

I think the best way to think of it is submissions of the game for "professional" review is part of the process of creating and releasing a game. It's not "they got to try it first" so much as "this is the last step before the game gets released to backers".

But backers shouldnt be seen as regular consumers. Were entitled (yes entitled) to the creative process and everything that it entails. Without the backers there wouldn't be a project with an end result. If they were gonna just take the money and go off the rail then why have a kickstarter in the first place, they could have easily just gotten a publisher and not have to be obligated to any arrangements to backers.

I didnt back that particular game but I hope that does well too after having its Wii U version cancelled. I'm sure they will make up for it with a good game.

Well, you're entitled to as much as is outlined in the agreement they present. If they guaranteed you alphas, betas, and the final copy before anyone else, then you royally got screwed over. If you were guaranteed to play it before it goes on sale, then they haven't really done anything wrong.

Do you see "backers" as one entity? I'm guessing they see backers as the thousands of individuals who donated, rather than one, accountable entity. They'll see news outlets as just one news outlets and individually select reputable ones to review.

I was under the impression donating was just to show your support for a final product. They may offer more stuff based on how much you give, but that's all optional. The reason to give is to get a game on the shelf, not to be a part of the process. At least, that's how I understand it.

Have you ever backed anything on kickstarter before? I just have a funny feeling you dont fully understand the process of how it works. You do get involved in the project and get updated on a frequent basis on how its going, thats how its supposed to be with kickstarters.

yeah, I backed a few things. I didn't really care about the weekly or monthly progress overly much. I was just wanting them to make the game. I felt no need to vote on designs or whatnot. I'd rather to see their vision than my own. Really, it all felt like just "hey, keep interacting with this project so you can build hype and spread the word" rather than "you're a huge part of this game!". Really, I'm not important. Just the game is important.

Thats a personal preference if you dont care but dont impose your own feelings on how its supposed to be please. I also never asked to have input on the project itself (unless I backed the tiers involving myself), investors should expect transparency whenever money is exchanged. Its common courtesy and professional, thats not a lot to ask.

why do you feel its entitled to backers? Was is stated backers would be the first to play the game outside of testers and developers?
The timing was not specific at all. But trade shows and other events was able to play the game before backers did and its not even remotely close to what the backers got to demo. I'm not opposed to sharing but I never got to play the game early as opposed to others who never gave a cent.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And what grounds do you have to establish said entitlement? Is there a contract or agreement that has language stipulating you are entitled to what you claim?
In the kickstarter. Have you ever backed one before?

Isn't that a lack of explaining how the industry works, as opposed to this particular kickstarter being shady? Do other video game kickstarters work differently? The few that I backed had higher tiers that allowed for early play, but this was just a week or so before everyone else got the copy. I just assumed "news" outlets would have had played it first.

Not that it is relevant, but yes I have. Backing something does not in itself entitle you to whatever you feel you deserve, it comes down to what is promised. So unless you can show where the kickstarter campaign granted you what you claim entitlement to, my statement that you are imposing your feelings stands.

Why would news outlets be more of a priority than the people who are responsible for the end result of a project in the first place. Its disrespectful and thats more of a fault in my end for not fully understanding the industry as you said before.

If you want to get technical then yes I got what was entitled from the campaign, after it was announced by everyone else and not before. I also dont understand why trade shows were playing a fully fledged demo that isnt close to what was presented to backers. So if you want to get technical you would be right, I learned my lesson and wont be doing this again.

The news thing may be a point to be made but I also don't know how much was shared with backers so I have no idea if you're exagerrating or not...so i'll skip that.

It's obvious reviewers and similar sources would get the game first. That's just universally how it works. It gives them time to properly play the game in order to give the fairest and fullest review they can of the game they are reviewing, instead of rushing out a review as fast as possible. As long as backers weren't promised to get the game early, they shouldn't feel entitled to get it early.

My only complaint is if this doesn't do well, what hope do i have for castlevania rip off bloodstain? We already had one "spiritual successor fail (Mighty no. 9) Now i don't wanna think about another. :(

As a backer who got to play a demo they released, I can say Bloodstained is already looking fantastic and plays really well...and that was just an alpha demo for E3 2016 I believe.

@Hells Malice

They did give news out before kickstarter backers and it became more apparent around E3 2016. I'm even surprised that they opened the Toy box demo to just anyone that preordered the game from then till now. That doesn't particularly bother me for others to play it but they did make it like it was only for kickstarter backers.
