Hacking a9hl & gateway - booting into gateway gives black screen

Hi,

I followed the process to install a9hl and then followed https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-with-gateway-on-v2-a9lh.431691/ to use Luma with Gateway for my daughter's O3ds XL.

It boots fine in Luma & also in Gateway mode initially (holding D pad down).
When I then go into the Gateway menu (holding L & Select while the Gateway Dragon appears, I can go ahead and format emunand.

When I copy back the content (backup of the internal sd card) to the then emply internal SD card and try again I can boot in Luma just fine but I am getting a black screen booting Gateway.

I followed the guideline for EmuNAND9 to recover and tried again the format/copy part and still the same issue.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Did you try using EmuNAND9's "Complete EmuNAND Setup"?

Also, what's your SysNAND version?

Nope I did not use Complete Emunand setup.

I just tried to boot Gateway it told me to press Left + Right + Select which I did (after using Emunand9) and now the system says Ver 11.3.0-36E and not SYS 11.3.0-36E.
Please tell me I can recover and that I have not 'killed' my daughter's 3DS XL console.

Yup. It's dead. Like @KunoichiZ said. Booting GW Mode on 11.3 kills//removes A9LH. It doesn't matter if you updated to 11.3 in Luma3DS or GW Mode.

Also, from what I am getting from everything that's been said, you probably were on 11.3, created an EmuNAND that would also be on 11.3, and because GW Mode doesn't support 11.3, you were blackscreening.

To boot GW Mode, you needed an EmuNAND that was on 11.2 or lower.

Your only options now, assuming you have a NAND Backup, is to get a hardmod or DSiWare method.

The sort-of is DSiWare Method: http://web.archive.org/web/20161214...ware-downgrade-(app-injection-and-second-3ds)
You need a second 3DS for the DSiWare and it must have CFW.
Keep in mind that link is more for reference, as not everything will apply. The basic idea is just to get the DSiWare transferred from the CFW system to the non-CFW system.
From there, you'll want to restore your NAND backup, instead of whatever else that link tells you to do.

I was willing to try the DSiWare Method but it requires a target 3DS with stock firmware between 11.0.0 and 11.2.0. My daughter's is 11.3.0-36E. I am dead meat right ?
Just in case I bought a New 3ds XL running 11.1.0 today. I can return it free of charge if I can restore her former console.
If not, will I be able to install both Gateway & a9hl on it ? If so how ?

You have an O3DS XL, right? You can only use an O3DS or 2DS to system transfer. N3DS -> O3DS/2DS is a no-go.

And like I said, that guide//link is just for reference. You are not suppose to do everything it tells you.

I do have another 3ds XL also running a9hl & Gateway.I have the initial nand backup from Gateway and also the one when installing a9hl. My concern was that the thread says up to 11.2.0 but if you tell me I can go ahead, I'll give it a try.

It says up to 11.2, because the idea of that guide was to downgrade the NFIRM, to allow dowgrades. This has been patched as of 11.3.

But DSiWare hax can still write a full NAND backup. This is what you're suppose to do. You are not going to do any of the NFIRM stuff.

Darn, I'm getting error code 011-3136 when trying to access eshop. I have freeshop installed, could the issue be linked to that ?

Not sure dgtool can restore NAND backups. Use fwTool.

You can't follow the first one, because you can't inject DSiWare onto the non-cfw 3DS.

That guide is more for people who want to plan ahead, in case for someone reason they end up losing A9LH.

Like I've said countless times, that link is more for reference.

Hourglass9 was how previous revisions of the guide made you backup your NAND.

You can backup a NAND with GodMode9 though.

Please guide me through this. I haven't told my baby girl (she'd be nuts at me, she did not want me to install a9hl in the first place).
Please be patient, me abilities is somewhat limited for this kind of stuff.
So how do I backup the Nand GodMode9 (BTW I believe I already have a backup of each console when I installed a9hl).?

When doing step 24: "Press (A) to unlock image writing, then input the key combo given " nothing happens
I press Start to restart, launch the game. It loops on Initiating save..; do not power off.

I am unable to continue to step 27:
Tap the screen or press any button to start the game and test if the save is functional

• If you are using the EUR files (Legends of Exidia), after pressing (A) or (Start) at the two title screens, select the first save slot and press continue

Never mind - solved this part (Steel Diver came with an update by default)
