I got Soundhax installed and do have the Homebrew Channel accessible - but as I understand it - that is as far as I can go with the 3DS now.

I was interested in some of the more low level stuff, Luma etc.

I feel like I missed out on some really, really cool stuff. Kinda bummed.

So - is that it, forget that dream and just use it as a game machine? Is there any hope for a new exploit in the near future, or is it pretty much done?

I purchased it on 4/1/2017 - 11.3 was already installed.

That said, at least I can play DOOM :D

Sky3ds+ is the only path for you.

I wasn't looking primarily at rom loading solutions, I was under the impression there was a lot more that could be done with CFW's when it came to software that you could develop / run on the system.

As of this moment you have two options...

1. Wait for SigHax or an 11.3 exploit.
2. Sell your 3DS and buy one with a firmware 11.2 or lower.

If you go with option #2, look at either buying a N3DS XL Galaxy for $200 or a refurbished N3DS XL from Nintendo. Those both should come with 11.2 or lower. I've bought 3 refurbished units from Nintendo(two 2DSes and a N3DS XL) the highest firmware I encountered was 9.4.

You could always get a hardmod/DSihax and wait for Sighax

The plaintext hardmod method and the DSiHaxx method both stopped working with 11.3. The only options now are to buy a new 3DS, or wait for a new exploit (Sighax).

Did you read the last four words of the post you quoted?

Yes, I did. I was pointing out that getting a hardmod/using DSiHaxx are pointless at this moment in time, because we can't use either of them to downgrade. Hence why I typed at the end of my reply,
...or wait for a new exploit (Sighax).
Note the "Sighax" in parenthesis. Now, I'm not entirely sure if Sighax will require a hardmod or DSiHaxx, so I apologize if I am mistaken in saying that they are useless. But my point still stands: on 11.3, getting a hardmod or installing DSiHaxx to downgrade, right now, would result in vain without Sighax.

AND WAIT FOR SIGHAX

Those are certainly the last four words of the post I had originally quoted in this thread.

Yeah...?

As people said above, you're either best of waiting, sell your system. Although personally I'd wait if you've had it for a long time and stuff, it be a bit rash to just sell it. Sighax fanboys when it isn't even released lmao

Yeah...?

we didn't say anything about hardmod/dsi downgrade. afaik sighax will be able to be installed either with hardmod/dsi or SafeSighaxInstaller

It has been a while and we still seem to be nowhere near having a bootrom dump, much less sighax. Both of those things will have to happen for 11.3+ consoles to be hackable, and even then it will require a hardmod or dsiwarehax, the latter of which is not useful for most as it requires the console to be hacked already in order to use the DSiWare injection method, or a second (CFW or <= 11.2) console with one of the 4 exploitable DSiWare games which have all been pulled from eShop now.

That is, unless a brand new pair of exploits (ARM11 kernel/ARM9) are found.
None of these things seem likely to happen any time soon. And even if/when sighax does happen, you'll need a hardmod (unless you have one of the things mentioned above), those cost like $70/€70 to get installed, unless you do it yourself. A Sky3DS+ (which is your only option on 11.3 right now) also costs over $80, and is far inferior to CFW.

In short, while there are other options short term (Sky3DS+) and possibly long term if Sighax or a new pair of exploits is ever released, the cheapest option is and will most likely always be to sell your 3DS and buy another on a lower firmware.
If you buy used, it won't cost you a thing, but you'll have to make sure it's on a hackable firmware.
If you buy new you will lose some money, but still less than what a hardmod or Sky3DS+ would cost you, and CFW is completely free.

If you are concerned about losing data on the 3DS when selling it and buying another one, you can dump your saves with JKSM before selling if you have eShop games, and you can get your NNID transferred after you get a new 3DS by contacting Nintendo, you'll just need the old and new serial number. You can do that either by calling them or using this form: http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/ask/ht/520/cp/593/mq/515

IMO .3ds loading is far superior to CIA. I don't own a Gateway or Sky3ds, but they seem much better than waiting seven years for a CIA to install.

And don't forget, it's Boot9 dump, not bootrom dump

Indeed, that's why I still use my Gateway.
However FreeShop is far superior to CIAs and in many ways superior to .3DS roms. You can't get everything there, but it has almost everything worth having, it may be slower than downloading a .3DS rom and copying it on, but nothing can beat it when it comes to convenience.

afaik freeshop installs cias, that's why dl and install speed is so slow

It's slow because the 3DS is slow. Read/write speeds and wifi speeds are slow across the board. You could have a homebrew that downloaded .3DS ROMs and it would still be equally slow. It's limited more by the 3DS' wifi speed than the read/write speed of the SD card reader, although that is also pretty slow.
But despite that, it's still fast enough to download and install a large game (several GB) in around 30 minutes. Which is fast enough when you're just downloading a new game, it's only annoying initially when filling up your new SD card with games.

I realize that. I was just saying that using either one would be pointless right now, because we can't use them to downgrade. They might be useful in the future, but probably not for a while.

I believe that using SafeSighaxInstaller will be the only way to install Sighax, as installing it manually (dumping the NAND and editing it) would be near-impossible. Presumably, the installer would be loaded with DSiHaxx. But I suppose we'll never know for sure - at least not until Boot9 is dumped!
(Wow, is this getting off-topic...)

By the way, @HWGuy, if a new update comes out (newer than 11.3), it's recommended to NOT update. That's generally the way it is with any of the 3DS updates.
