Finally finished with chapter 11, starting work on Chapter 12. My main idea for this chapter is:

Remove all mounted units. Its just strange plot wise. How the hell did Nohr get all of those horse onto the boats like really? Also the level would likely be too hard with Xander and his posse after you with the addition of skills into this level. To fix this, Xander and Peri will be reclassed for this level only. A "dismounted" class if you will. Xander will be a Hero and Peri a generic Lancer. Thoughts?
I can't say that I've used this hack (as I've had no interest in playing on Lunatic), but I do like what you've been doing in it. those replacements sound fine to me.

Thanks! It's been really fun reworking Birthright so far and I'm glad you like what I've been doing so far. Birthright is really interesting, its a mix of somewhat decent levels and just terrible levels.

Also for other people to note. I'm thinking about ungimmicking revelations by replacing most of the Valla and other gimmick based maps with their Skirmish counter parts. This means no snow on the snow level, and no fog of war on chapter 7. Of course this project would likely take quite a bit longer and would have to wait until I'm done with Birthright, but I think it has potential.

I'm all for no generic mounts, but don't change Xander and Peri. They become generic because of it.

If anything, just change the turn they spawn.

But, it literally makes zero sense how they got the horses into the opera place. Makes even less sense how they navigate it with there horses.

Except the place is wide enough for it, as seen during the battle cutscenes? You can bring Silas there, you know? Same goes for the Conquest's version, which even has Leo as a forced deployment there. It's weird, yeah, but it's a game. Willing suspension of disbelief and all of that.

Not to mention that unless you place a lot of enemy fliers, low-MOV Xander would be absurdly easy to cheese.

Maybe he could make the movement on Xander higher to make up for the lack of a horse?

I still think that the horse should be kept for both since there is enough room for it and there are always oddities like those in Fire Emblem because ti is a video game first, everything else second--it thrives on willing suspension of disbelief. We have been shoting people through walls for years now.

It has been almost two years since "If" came out and almost one since "Fates" did, and i have never seen complains about horses in a boat, in this game or otherwise.

I think Horse Xander would make the map challenging, especially if you set him to appear later on the map but with a freeze vein right in front of him. This would completely deny the player of all attempts at cheesing that map with a flier, and Xander would properly work as a "i'm forcing you to escape, bitch" enemy like the Faceless waves from the backlines in CQ21/Endgame.

Ok so for chapter 12 I got a new idea. I noticed the conquest version of this map is much better designed and am thinking about reworking the whole chapter around Conquests map layout. Thoughts ?

Hmm... in what way are you talking about, exactly?

Are you goign to change the spawn points to the left? The objective from escape to kill the boss? Add waves of flying reinforcements with annoying staff users? goign to make lines of Pass users?

Hmm... something that i just thought about: you could have Team Xander spawning on the escape tiles, and add a couple debuffing Dragon veins to the upper left to make engaging and defeating them possible (You know, the ones in wolfskin peak? or perhaps outright HP drain like in CQ9 or BR14).

...A fun little thing would be to have an event where Elise enfeebles Xander from afar to help Corrin but without being seen, but i wouldn't mess with the story, haah.

Messing around with chapter 12. I've decided to keep the map as is, since its too much work to import existing maps. I've just kind of been messing around with the chapter in general for the past hour. Heres some screenshots:

Also someone isn't too happy about you attempting to leave....

Releasing Chapter 12 now. Still has the original Birthright map so dont worry about that. There are over all less enemies, but most are overall stronger. The point of this map isn't to kill all of the enemies, its to escape and defeat Xander as quickly as possible. Xander's stats have been nerfed by a little bit to make him beatable (I hope).

Chapter 12: Dark Reunion
  • Maids with staves added here and there.
  • Don't even try to fight Garon. Instant Regret.
  • Xander blocks the escape route and must be defeated to escape.
  • Impossible to flier cheese this level.
  • Who told me Enfeeble was a good idea? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • As of now the Adventurers seem a bit strong, will balance accordingly.
Chapter should be up, have fun testing it out! (Or don't and be frustrated at the challenge either one works)

"As quickly as possible," you say?

But now that Xander is busy guarding the escape route, what pressures the player to work on the map quickly?

If you don't reach Xander as a group as fast as you can, you won't be able to defeat him before the rest of the map begins to move and overwhelms you.

Ok doing some changes now.

Chapter 12: Dark Reunion
  • All enemies will now rush you at turn 7 instead of turn 5.
  • Who said King Garon would just sit idle while you take your sweet time killing Xander? :^)
Have fun

This is actually pretty awesome! Many of Birthright's maps have the potential to be good in Conquest's style, especially some of the latter ones!

I also had a question about how you're managing to pull this off, I'm a bit new to 3ds romhacking in general, but Fates level editing really piques my interest, so I was wondering how you went about making edits to maps, mainly adding and changing enemy units, along with what skills they had. What's a good place to start if I wanted to do some level experimenting in a similar vein to this (not going to steal your thunder, I promise)?

For Fates hacking specifically, there are a few places that you can look at to get started.
  • RainThunder's repository/wiki. At the least, I suggest reading the BIN file page in case you need to do any hex editing. You can also find a list of important files at the bottom of the BIN page. The other pages on the wiki can help you figure out where things are located in the ROM. I'd also check out the repository - RainThunder has a lot of useful tools there that you'll definitely want if you decide to do any Fates hacking.
  • You can find a couple of my own tools here. The script editor and person editor would be useful for making changes to levels.
  • FE14 Dispos Tools can help you edit map spawns.
  • In general, the Fates ROM hacking general thread is the best place to go if you need help. The main post has plenty of notes about file formats as well as links to useful tools. If you don't know how to do something, you can get help pretty quickly by asking in that thread.

Thanks for listing out all of those tools thane, saves me some trouble lol.

I thought I would take this opportunity to talk about the future of this hack. Sadly, it is currently on hiatus while I finish up some of my GBA FE hacks (See: Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones Weapon Reversal) and until I get some motivation back to go through all of the levels once more. Sorry for anyone still waiting on the next chapter! Soon tm.
