Try replacing IOS 249 with d2x beta52 as IOS56 instead. beta53 is wonky and was only created to be able to use either USB port.

When does it occur? Do you get to the wrist strap screen even?

no wrist strap screen. when I click to start the game, the screen goes blank then after a while it goes back to the home-brew screen. two games work, but no others

ahh, so some games are working? so it's not the drive nor the cIOS.
it's probably the ISO.

so two possibilities :
1. the ISO is bad or corrupted. check it or get a new one.
2. the ISO is write protected. disable write protected in file properties on your computer.
3. very rarely, it could be a path issue, where the loader still see a game where it's physically not there or not in the right path. but it shouldn't happen. for example you have the folder for the game, but no wbfs or iso inside, or different titleID between folder and filename, etc.

The problem is that I've loaded ISOs straight from the game disk using loader gx and then tried to play it and it won't load...it dumps me back to the home-brew screen. Any ideas?

You mean booting original discs? Do they work from the system menu? You may have NAND save emulation turned on and nowhere to save the files.

The disks work from the main wii menu. after I use loader gx to rip one down to the hard drive (500gb), I try to load that game up from the hard drive in loader gx and it sends me to the home-brew screen. So the ISO should be good....it's not downloaded from a questionable source....it's the original game disk.....

What revision of the loader are you using and are you sure you have the game IOS set to 249 or 250? Is the drive MBR/FAT32?
