If I buy a used ps3 from Gamestop today, can I have it running custom firmare as easily as on a PSP, 2DS?

I don't currently have a ps3, but I used to own one. When I gET another, it will be the 12gb model since that's what I had before and I still have my old 120gb hard drive that I bought for it...

If the ps3 is a model that originally came with 3.55 or below ofw then you could use a hardmod to downgrade it to 3.55 ofw then install cfw. However you might not find it easy to install the hardmod. If the ps3 already had 3.55 or below ofw then it would be easy to install cfw.

I wouldn't recommend Hard modding to those who have never touched a ps3 yet, but if getting a ps3 in a local store is your only option then you
may want to look at some videos before making a final decision. You can buy PS3's on the net with 3.55 on them from Ebay or Amazon just make sure that it says "3.55" somewhere on the Listing. Try getting a Slim with 3.55 as Phat PS3's tend to have issues
Had my Slim on CFW for 5 years and its still in great shape

Yeah, phaties have some issues... my cechg works fine, during gaming 70-73°C CPU and 60-65 RSX

well that maybe true, but I wouldn't trust a used phaty period, long gaming can easily trigger YLOD overtime on phat models, which is why the slim became a thing for better airflow

I use webman mod on my phat never let the temps go over 62c on CPU. Fan hangs around 32-40% so it's not even that bad after playing the old mass effects. It also has the 226 Apu and 19 blade fan. But the PS2 phats have nand chips Wich is way harder than a nor slim

maybe when sony stop ps3 production we may see higher firmwares getting hacked.

not that it matters to me because i still have my launch ps3 rocking cfw..... id just hate the day it dies and have to replace, chances of getting one compatible will be hard.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

    For your R4

It's old but it's the best firmware out for DS stuff
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    nvm it does support mine
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
