Nintendo to double Switch production for 2017 following strong demand

rsz_nintendo-switch-sales-prediction.jpg

Whether you like the console or not, the Switch is Nintendo's fastest selling hardware. And the console's financial success doesn't seem to stop here.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "Nintendo Co. has decided to at least double its planned production of the Switch console in the year ending March 2018 owing to strong demand". This means that they'll double production from 8 million units to 16 million! That's a massive increase from 5 million units sale predicted before shipping by analyst SuperData Research. And an even bigger number considering that the ill-fated WiiU sold just 13.5 million units in total.

These figures seem indeed promising for the Switch, with which Nintendo was adamantly betting on to right the wrongs of the WiiU, as the higher sales, rather than being a short-term money maker, might motivate third-party developers to invest in the system and further attract more consumers.

The Switch's early sales might not foretell how it will fare in the long run but it is off to a good start.

Does that mean that they'll produce 6 units per day instead of 3? Because right now it's easier to find a four-leaf clover than it is to find a Switch.
In the European region retailers have plenty of Switch units available. That said, websites (generally from UK), don't take Switch "deals" too well because they're being sold at full price so it's a legitimate reason to receive criticism. The only Switch stuff that's available at discount are accessories, like, glass tempered screen protector, silicone cases, grips, stands, cases and so on on eBay.

Dock is a 15v-enabled HDMI dock with USB-PD charging and USB3 support. Cheapest commercially available equivalent is ~150-200 USD. Nintendo sells it for ~60, which is much less.
I don't mean to be rude, but that's total nonsense and babble. Most of the circuitry is already in the Switch itself (charging circuit, all of the video chips, USB controller etc.) or the power adapter (transformer, voltage regulator, smoothing capacitors etc.), the dock contains a USB hub controller which costs pennies, a MyDP-to-HDMI converter which is equally cheap and a handful of CMOS and other smaller, insignificant chips. The dock doesn't do anything important at all, the video and audio signals are encoded by the console already. The charging is also handled internally, otherwise the system wouldn't be rechargeable without the dock. The dock is "15V-ready" because it's connected to a 15V power supply, that's it. It serves as an adapter and splitter, nothing more. $13 says you're grossly overestimating its value.

Dock Teardown showing that there's nothing of interest or value in there:

MyDP to HDMI adapter with a USB charge plug. $13. Bang:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01FW74CQS/

The plug seems large because it contains *all of the circuitry* required to do the job. Yes, it's in the plug.

Here's another one. $29, just plug in that wall charger and you're set. This one's 4K-ready, too:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015DJ4QYI/

This one's $10. How low do you think we can go?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GU4QV2G/

There's zillions of those things out there and they're all cheap as dirt. I don't know where you're pulling your figures from. If the guts cost around $10, you're paying $80 for a bunch of, frankly, low quality plastic.

Huge shortages where I live. There are weekly drops of units that disappear within a day or two and scalpers, that's the only two avenues to get a system.

Cant wait to get my switch next month !! and play zelda

But in regards to this news. Am i the only one who fears that this console was designed to have a short life span?

Bear with me here. I really like the switch but it kinda feels like nintendo are trying to ship this console out and quickly start designing their next console/handheld in the background so that they can start the next generation with Sony and MS

i now nintendo doesnt care about competing but im talking about this from the prespective of Nintendo wanting to start the next gen with its competitors so that their next system can have a longer life

i personally dont think it would be wise to have a switch or even a switch slim as Nintendos main current gen machine when or if the PS5 or X2 come out.

Its just what i feel or think on the matter

Other Opinions are welcome
But if they are making their new next console, what's it gonna be?

They probably won't do VR since it's already been done and Nintendo likes to do new things.

No, you're not the only one on the internet, but you really should be. It's not going to happen because this isn't like the easily-upgraded 3DS. This is the most power you can get in this form factor right now. When X2 comes out, the first X2 device is not going to be $300, more like $400+. And it probably won't be a hybrid, either. Switch's future depends almost entirely on sales, like any device, but 4-5 years before a "Switch X2" is released, and that's still dependent on Switch sales as well.

So did they even bother with the nes classic mini cause they screwed a lot of people with that.
Well it was a novelty device...there are a thousand cheap mini-computers you can dedicate to emulation. Except on those you can fit every NES game ever released rather than 30 or whatever.

Maybe a handheld or console with VR? Nintendo have said VR is something their intrested in. Plus handheld VR would be mind blowing. Itd be the next generation of mobile and portable xonsoles put together

Be careful when you say Europe, Europe is vast, not everywhere in Europe it is available.

UK was fully sold out in the first week of launch, next restock is due end of march.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
