Gaming Why Breath of the Wild Had to Have Breakable Weapons

Breakable weapons aren't too bad but it creates a distraction from the battle and when you have hoards of enemies, it'll also make you think twice about which sword to use, if any at all.

My issue with BotW is its poor framerate. I get that Nintendo wanted to push Switch out on the date they promised but the game's technical performance suffered due to it. I'd give it an 8/10.

The real issue is that it's designed for wii u, not switch. The switch is capable of better framerate and graphics, but it's just a port. Even if they had the time, there's no way to perfectly optimize an already complete wii u game for the switch without a complete rewrite. If you want to see what the switch can really do you're gonna have to wait for the first games that were not finished or mostly finished with a wii u release in mind.

The first 'real' Switch game will be Mario Odyssey that will make full use of its hardware capabilities. It's just a shame that Zelda being the amazing game that it is is being held back by hardware issues.

I've seen Digital Foundry's video and the WiiU version isn't much better either, it's in fact technically inferior.

today we enjoy ww and tp hd remakes...in the future, BOTW 4K enhanced! in 5 or 6 years...lol

I just slugged through some twilight princess that I didn't want to play to see if I could get 20 hearts on my wolf link amiibo in BOTW wii u. Had never played TP cuz I was working on wind waker HD first. BOTW is graphically so far beyond TP, so smooth and polished, it's pretty amazing. twilight princess looks good but just doesn't have the real life smoothness in characters movements. Wind Waker is graphically brilliant but more toonish and just not as deep/fleshed out as BOTW (even though it's possible to prefer WW style over BOTW as a matter of preference). Skyrim was much of the inspiration for BOTW, and it feels blocky and awkward compared to how polished the graphic style and execution in BOTW is.

I have no problem with breakable. But there should be blacksmiths to maintain them (and you could be offered a chance to learn that skill)

Yes. Also they shouldnt' break so fast. A sword that can't last through an entire pary of bokoblins must have been made by a moron, not a weapon maker. Rusty swords, okay that breaking fast I get. But how is a big thick club with bones sticking out of it ever going to break? Oe what's essentially a lightsaber?

They just made the system massively unbalanced and didnt' think it through, instead throwing in 20x the weapons you'd need if they'd done it right.

It's a great game, only a massive troll (and. or idiot) would give it a 7/10, but they really shouldn't have made weapons so fragile you have to treat them like their made of china.

It actively discourages fighting, in a game where fighting is already far more challenging that past games in the series.

When I spend more time using bombs than a sword, there's something in massive need of tweaking.

I never found an issue or ran out of weapons, i have a feeling people who's weapons break easily just use them to got rocks or trees before fighting am enemy and when they do they just go guns blazin and hit their shields like there is no tomorrow.

they may do some "greater weapon/shield durability" toggle (personally I think twice or so as durable would be a huge improvement if they want to stick with their approach of forcing you to use many different weapons). But by then I'll have put in my time, won't be able to replay the game for a verrrrrrry long time. Like maybe 10 yrs!

Same. But at the point I am now, it's not really a big deal for me. I can get swords and bows at ease.

Breakable weapons are an inconvenience (especially in this game as they don't last very long) but it's something you can get used to quite easily, especially if you think of weapons as consumable items. I still don't like it, but I don't mind it anymore either.

However, one little feature would have appeased me greatly: Allow me to throw the remains of my broken weapon at an enemy. It'd be a great way to vent my frustration or sadness. Also throwing weapons is one of my favorite ways to damage enemies, even when I have arrows. There's something comically satisfying about it.

The better weapons have higher durability, also I'm constantly running into weapons so it's not a issue

Wrong, it's the strongest criticism leveled against the game. It's a live action combat system, constantly being paused and interrupted by weapon switches. Throws off the flow, and it's a nagging irritation even if ya got plenty of good weapons.

It's still the best open world game I've ever played tho, an open world masterpiece for sure.

Poor Jim Sterling was DDoS'd for stating this fact and opinion on why he disliked. There's a lot of fanboys from different companies and products but if they love said product so much, they should be using than worrying about someone's opinion.

Honestly, I'd probably enjoy the durability system if I could throw the broken remains of my gear. Get that last insulting hit in. Throwing a damaged weapon just isn't the same. Probably a smash bros sentiment as you can throw the broken beam swords. And yeah, zelda zealots are particularly obnoxious and apparently cannot accept the notion of opinion. There's some on every side, but the number for zelda is unbelievably staggering.

I hated breakable weapons at first but after getting some time in I really enjoy it. It makes me care about my inventory, make battle plans and I get excited when I find new weapons I haven't seen. I think it works well in breath of the wild.

Do you know what sucks more than breakable swords? Breakable shields.

It's so much fun to use shields to skate and then when it breaks, it's really disappointing because it ends the fun abruptly. :(

Sorry about the photo quality, I used my phone's camera (couldn't get it to upload via my Switch with my WiFi connection).

Honestly wish higher level weapons didn't break so easily. Sticks and wooden materials breaking makes at least some sense, but top tier and hard to find weapons break so easily that I never want to use them.

There's also no indicator of when a weapon is about to break, a little health bar of sorts under each would be a huge improvement for me.

Are people still pretending that weapon durability isn't basically exactly the same as ammo in literally any shooter game?

Like oh no the powerful weapons don't have infinite durability. Its like crying that the rocket launcher only gets 5 or 6 shots. The broadsword breaks after a few moblins for some people but is that really any different than wasting 2 or 3 clips of ammo taking out a handful of guys in some other game? And weapons are beyond plentiful after you get off the plateau, just like ammo crates littered around other game maps. You don't even have to melee a guy to take their guns, just sneak up while a bokoblin group is sleeping and loot their shit. If you need to fight, bombs are unlimited. If you can't fight, escape routes and alternate paths are plentiful. Hell, I found an unguarded area in the middle of a field with about a dozen broadswords and claymores just stuck in the ground, even with extra weapon slots I couldn't carry them all. Durability is a null factor when you look at your options as a whole and not as a singular path.

Meanwhile the durability of items you find completing challenges and exploring is signifigantly better than the items looted from bokoblins. The Frost Spear and a Knight's Claymore combo can get me through quite a few enemy camps on their own. Hell, even the silver lynels only broke two of my enchanted greatswords and a handful of old fashioned arrows, and they have the most health of anything in the game other than Ganon (who also wasn't terribly hard, I think I was overprepared farming enchanted weapons, guardian arrows and elixers)

Really, if you have to complain about anything, complain about
there not being a true endgame, yet again. Just once I'd like to explore hyrule without the threat of whomever looming over everyone. I want to see hyrule rebuild. I want to see what I accomplished make a difference in the world.
That's my complaint of the game.
