I could, but I'm afraid I might brick my console. When I was rrading the instructions for CFW, it said that putting my 3ds to sleep mode might brick it. That thought terrified me.

You dont have to worry, its a fairly quick and safe process. Do you have a new3ds or an old3ds?

New. But I'm on ver. 11.3, so it won't work.

You're out of luck then, because 11.3 can't be hacked yet. As others have said, wait for sighax. Sleep mode only causes your n3ds to brick while on 2.1 firmware. To answer the first question: Installing tik files without CFW is impossible.

afaik people are just theorizing that it will work on any firmware with a hardmod.

Pretty sure sighax needed a hardmod anyway for non-hacked consoles. I may be wrong.
A hardmod is gonna cost a decent amount unless you do it yourself.

Hmm, I was under the impression that a hardmod was only able to downgrade the NFIRM, hence why people didn't just downgrade the whole firmware with the hardmod.

You're likely to be out of luck forever if you're not willing to spend money. If sighax gets released without any new free arm9 exploit, then you would have these options to install it:
1. Buy another exploitable 3DS, buy a DSiWare game from the eShop, transfer, and use DSiWarehax on the 11.3 console
2. Pay someone ~$50 to do a hardmod, plus postage each way
3. Try and do a hardmod yourself, you'd have to buy the tools and equipment (~$30?), plus you risk frying your console or damaging it (eg the WiFi card or some buttons or a screen).
