Hi, sorry if this has been posted before, but I can only find references to different software to try, some of which don't seem to work on win10.

Some suggest alcohol, I've tried alcohol 120% which only seemed to want to save to mds, and 52% which added ccd but not Bin/Cue.
There's CloneCD, but it only supports img/ccd too.
I've heard of CDRWin from Goldenhawk, but it's also shareware and and doesn't even detect drives on win10, something with ASPI or whatever it uses not working.
I prefer Imgburn, but it doesn't preserve the subchannel data according to their forum admin.

I know I can just download the games I want but I wish back up my own discs.

what is that subchannel data for? do you need it for emulation?
Copy protection on some games. Without it some games will just sit on a black screen. So, yes.

I recall a PSX2PSP program that had a ripper built-in or came with one bundled, that worked, don't recall if it was img/sub/ccd or bin/cue though.

Bin/cue does not save subchannel info, you need to use MDS or CCD. CCD will save subchannel data in a separate file with the extension .sub while MDS has it inside the MDF (the disc image itself).

So not the sub tracks? Like how some games have the music in different sectors so if you rip it wrong it won't have certain audio tracks included, for example this rip of Medievil I included a picture of works like this and copies of Wipeout XL for PS1 found on the internet are also like this.

If you're looking to play this on real hardware, you won't need that, as long as you have one of the latest stealth chips (last gen to come out for psx/psone).

If you have a classic 4-wire chip, you can either patch your Isos before burning them (problem games) or look for a free homebrew program called import player light. Burn it and it will boot up just fine with any chip. Then in the main menu turn Anti-AR killer and Anti-mod killer on, put your protected game in and go :)

No, I believe those are just different tracks on the disc. I'm not sure how a bin/cue setup would look with subchannel since they may not exist? but I know with img/ccd it shows up as a .sub file.

Eh, I mostly just want to have a 1:1 image. Thanks though.

I saw a post somewhere stating otherwise but they definitely could've been wrong. Do you know of any non-shareware rippers that would preserve it?

You could try Imgburn but I am not sure it will rip the subchannel data. I use Alcohol 52% free edition so I can rip to MDS for all my PS1 games.

The game will actually function exactly the same whether it's 1:1, or using using either of the two methods I described. But if you'd prefer to go the 1:1 route, I honestly don't know of anyway to rip that extra info the way you want to. Not saying there isn't a way to do it, just that if there is, I've never heard of it, personally

MDS and CCD are 1:1 of what's on the disc.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
