yet another short rant to pile on the NES Mini
it sucks. limited in display setting and features like simple Turbo-Fire / Auto-Fire function. a controller thats too short. HDMI only and no Composite video so you can't plug it into a Car DVD player, or a CRT Tv, or video capture devices.
But what strikes me right away is the game selection. what bonehead at nintendo picked these games?. i realize the absolute essentials like Chip & Dale, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, TMNT 2 & 3, and Microsoft/Rarewares Battletoads and RC Pro AM.... they can't get the licenses, yeah i get that. But no english River City Ransom?. unforgivable. Dragon Warrior series?, Bionic Commando?, Blaster Master?, Rad Racer?, NOPE!, better to load up a lot of crappy first gen NES games that are on those 99-in-1 Famiclones and everybodys played a million times.
SMB 1, 2, 3?... Why?, There are remakes with improved graphics on both GBA and Wii's "Super Mario All Stars".... all 3 SMB games plus Lost Levels on a Wii disc....
Startropics. and No ST 2: Zodas revenge.... pointless. what an oddball selection. wouldn't Earthbound Zero be more appropriate?. or at least add Final Fantasy 2.
Kirbys Adventure. same thing. no Kirby 2. pointless. for 3DS there is a fully 3D remake of Kirby 1. for Wii owners there is the excellent Kirbys Collection. Why?
Dr. Mario ...who cares?, where is Tetris?, Because Dr.Luigi, Dr.Mario Miracle Cure, and the dozens of other releases on 3DS and Wii U aren't good enough. Pointless addition.
Mega Man 2... but not the other 5 games in the series?. Pointless. i'm playing Mega Man Collection on 3DS right now. and why 2?, MM 3 is the definite version and has Charge Shot and Slide mechanics.
Metroid... why wouldn't i play Metroid Zero Mission?, or even the improved Famicom Disk System version of metroid with stereo sound and a save system?
Castlevania... same, FDS version exists. better sound and a save system. this is just pointless.
Final Fantasy... Remake exists with improved graphics. on multiple platforms.
Donkey Kong... missing the Pie Factory Level. its not like Nintendo doesn't have the good version, they released it on 3DS eShop as part of a promotion. and this is the problem, on an emulation machine you would load up MAME and play the origional Arcade version, as is was intended to be played. (also no DK 3. pointless.)
Double Dragon 2... aweful. pick the game thats unplayable because the controls are screwed up. Also, MAME....
Castlevania 2... the game so bad and poorly designed it was the topic of multiple AVGN episodes. better to play the Fixed version wouldn't it?
Ghosts & Goblins... naw, i would rather play this other game called "put your balls in a vice and squeeze until you hear a pop"... much less stressful and nerve grating than this impossible POS. .. (Also, MAME)
Super C.... this is actually a good addition, but 90% is just entering the Konami Code over and over again. some of those 99-in-1 Famicom Multicart with Super C on it where you can select any stage, start with any weapon, rapid fire. Even back in 1989 you had Game Genie. Cheats are pretty much a Necessity. its just beating your head against a wall without cheats or stage selection.
