Homebrew Is there a "risk" getting a Wii u now? (Forced update?)

I got interested in getting a Wii U and play the new Zelda and thanks to this forum I found out there is also homebrew options to this console.

However, I curious about if there will be a forced update or anything like that coming with the new Zelda and will that make it impossible to use homebrew?

Since the stores where I live have stopped selling Wii U I'm looking for one in a "used" condition but I dont want to buy one and find out that homebrew wont work when I'm trying to play Zelda...

Any advice regarding this?

Wii U max FW is 5.5.1 so it is safe to buy any Wii U , update it to 5.5.1 then use CFW like Haxchi/CHBC

Edit: I do recommend using a DNS server to block updates/eShop as Nintendo could roll out a sneak update right before Breath of the Wild launches.

The Wii U is beyond EOL. Nintendo hasn't updated the system in forever and even if they did, it's doubtful that will invest that much into it with the Switch coming next month. Basically, you are safe at this point.

Because you're getting one in used condition, you should do so as soon as possible, before the launch of BOTW.
This way, if your pre-owned console is not currently on a 5.5.x firmware, you can still perform an online update.
If a new firmware comes out, you'll have to source a copy of Paper Mario: Colour Splash (I think).
Once you're on the target firmware, use a DNS blocker or, even better, cut your console's internet connection.

Yea, you will be safe. Chances are that Zelda will have 5.5.1 on disc, however Nintendo could roll out 5.6.0 right before or on March 3rd when Zelda launches.

No, that would be the worst option. If 5.6.0 is released, you will need color splash on disc or to buy a Wii U already on 5.5.1 since updating will no longer be an option. Best option is to get any Wii U now and update to 5.5.1 as soon as possible for CFW usage.

Let's stop with the forced optimism saying that Nintendo won't make a new firmware to WiiU at all.
Best course of action, buy a WiiU NOW, update it to 5.5.1 if it isn't already with the version, cut the internet connection from it after installing CBHC or at least haxchi.
Wait for BOTW to launch, if it requires anything higher than 5.5.1 eventually people will make a way to spoof the version (or a way to bypass checks entirely).
Nintendo may force a new firmware to at least try to boost this final stretch of game sales on the Wii U.

I see a lot of people selling both the "original" and the "premium" version of wii u.
As I understand the only difference is that there is more internal storage in the premium one?
This doesn't really matter since I would fill up the 32gb storage with just a couple of games right? Isn't it better to just have a external harddrive with the games and connect it or how does it work?

Go with "original" one if you want to have just plain Wii U.
Go with "premium" [Deluxe in some country's] if you want Sensor bar, Gamepad Charging station & Gamepad stand, more space on NAND, 2 Plastic blocks which allow your Wii U to stand up.

If you want essentials you don't have, go with premium.
If you want just plain Wii U, go with basic. [Aka "original"]
You still need to buy external HDD since even 23GB free of space will only store 2-5 good games.
HDD needs to be formated to Wii U format [Or you can use Mocha CFW newest fork which in my opinion is useless that adds FAT32HDD support]
Also, get Y cable. Wii U doesn't provide enough power to HDD.

While I agree with all you say the original also comes with a sensor bar (well at least here in Scotland it does lol)

You have to try it really, if it randomly gives errors then you need y cable

Adding to what Felek666 said and what you correctly guessed, worth mentioning the gamepad powered and nonpowered docks + the official screen protector bundled with a DSi XL stylus cost here in Italy under 5 € together

Thus breaking anyone with a Haxchi setup/Browser Setup/Homebrew

We would end up with a unmodded WiiU forcefully ..

Update on disc? Just wait, it will get bypassed.
Worst case would be adding a thing that will only work on newer system software which will be required in order to launch BoTW [*cough* That also can be bypassed]

So let's wait and see. They can disguise update(s) everywhere, even as Software Update, DLC etc.
