Hardware Kimishima confirms voice-chat will definitely require a smartphone

Nintendo has clearly gotten much better with Kimishima but the mere fact that the voice-chat will have to be done through a smartphone app and only between friends is a huge deal-breaker. I remember the old days of voice-chatting on the 360 with strangers and I really liked the conversations we had, there weren't really that many of the stereotypical kids screaming as many like to point out (the alternative to this, was some morons putting their background music on the mic lol).

So, let's wrap it up:
- One rental game per month
- Voice-chat with friends-only through a smartphone app
- Yearly cost of $18-27

Some may try to defend it as it's "very cheap" but it really offers nothing of value so screw it. When Nintendo starts their paid service I won't be paying for it. Single player/offline games then.

It's very disappointing and in a way, a bit depressing too. Nintendo are going to suppress the possibility of fans talking while playing online on a new video game console. This goes against the idea of uniting gamers.

Considering I use discord for most of my gaming I tend to not use console voice chat anyways, so this makes no difference to me. Also I have no problem for paying for online if it's that cheap lmao.

To many "hardcore" gamers it is. It certainly isn't to me, since I have basically no friends and besides, why would I use voice chat on Mario Kart or Splatoon? Or even Sma5h? What will really make this get through to ninty is if they SOMEHOW manage to get a CoD or Battlefield on there, a MAYOR parts of the multiplayer will be gone, and people will riot.

They could probably fix it in an update. We didn't have Miiverse for a couple updates, then we did. It wasn't a solution to voice-chat, but it was something. Maybe if enough people say something, you'll get it. But as soon as you get it, you won't want it.

I would. Live chat with other Nintendo gamers could be so much fun while playing a game to know what they think about the game and more because interacting with others can be a positive experience, imo.

have...you ever played a game with voice-chat where children are playing as well? What you describe does not happen. Not in public chat.

Though I must say I'd be just as happy with public audio being turned off by default and only through a few hoops can you enable it.

1. Nintendo's main demographic are children. I know kids having smartphones is all the rage, but that's still locking out a chunk of people from being able to voice chat.

2. That's such an awkward way to do things. I have to hold my phone and my switch in my lap to talk to someone? You can't even use a computer to do that, you have to balance two screens and the controller, that's so clunky.

3. Portability? So voice chatting online over LTE, a data drain, and you have to pull a phone and switch out in public to talk. Oh whoops, I dropped my phone. Oh whoops, I couldn't pay attention to both objects at the same time and left my switch on the bus. It's awkward to the max.

4. The 3DS has voice chat. The DS even had voice chat. We're taking steps backwards in innovation when we shouldn't be. How hard is it to make a working voice chat system on the console!? If it's because the switch needed to be as small as possible, at least rig a mic setup into the dock.

I'm not buying a switch, but if I were, this voice chat thing wouldn't impact me in any way. But there's still clear issues with the lack of voice chat being system-based.

See thats what im talking about. I been playing games for a while and gotten into online gaming long time ago. The only time i really voice chat is on Destiny.
I play battlefield all the time and have only use voice chat about 2 times and that was just normal talking to a friend.

Ply COD and all i hear is people fussing or just loud music playing. Never once chat with anyone.
so like you said whats the point in chatting with someone on mario or smash?
Splatoon you might tell them to cover this or cover that, but i doubt there will be much talking needed.

And for the people not thinking. You can use a bluetooth headset with your phone to voice chat. So you phone doesnt even have to be in the same room and you dont have to hold it.

So yea i doubt any of this will effect me.
NOw it might effect the shit talkers and music blasters. But i guess thats a good thing it will be less of them online.

And ill pay for online when some online games come. They did say they were going to add online into the VC games. So that might be pretty cool to play those old games online

Where does it say you have to hold your phone to use it? Do you have to hold your phone to use a smart watch? Do you have to hold your phone to use bluetooth headphones? Do you have to hold your phone when using it as a mobile hotspot for your laptop? No. Smartphones are capable of working remotely.

Yea thats what i been thinking too. It might simply be up to the dev with how this all works. There is a mic port in the headphone jack. So it very possible to use it.

But we will see how all this works when some online 3rd party games come out.
