Kojima Talks about the Switch, compares it to Transfarring and the gamer's dream

The creator of the Metal Gear series shared his thoughts on the Nintendo Switch in an interview with IGN at RTX Sydney, a recent video game convention held at, well, Sydney.

“You might be familiar with the fact that for a previous game that I did, we had a specification that we called 'Transfarring' where you could take the saved data from the PS Vita and move it over to the PS3 and back and forth like that,” Kojima told IGN. “I believe [Switch] is an extension of that idea. The fact you can play something at home and take it outside, this is the gamer's dream. The Switch is an evolution of that.”

“For example, often when you buy a Blu-Ray disc, it'll have a code on the inside for a digital version, so in the same respect you can watch it at home and then take it on the go on your tablet and smartphone,” he continued. “This is how movies and TV are moving, and this is how games should go.”

Kojima added that he sees the Switch as the beginning of a future where people will be able to play any game on any device.

“I feel like cloud technology is what everything will eventually move to,” he said. “It's further behind right now than I think where people thought it would be at this point, but I think it will go there, and when the infrastructure is ready, you'll be able to play everything, on every device, anywhere. The Switch is the predecessor to this step."

Does the game creator, who claims that 70% of his body is made of movies, newfound interest in the Switch foretell more Nintendo support with Kojima-branded games?

I agree with Kojima--The concept of the Switch is ingenious. But I'm not so sure Nintendo executed it well, with it being a little underpowered and just falling short of a lot of people's expectations. Hopefully this means we get some crazy game from him on the switch though!
To be fair if it were more powerful the portable aspect would be shot in the foot.

Personally I think the concept is a good idea but the presentation of the Switch was a step in the wrong direction. Yes you can soon play Mario Kart 8 on the go and at home seamlessly but you have to buy the game again if your a WiiU owner. As a consumer I'm tired of buying the same game multiple times to play it on different platforms. For example I bought Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain on my PS4 on release date but after seeing the better quality, mods and community for the PC version I feel as if we buy one game on one console/PC we should have access to the same game on all the platforms available either for a small fee or completely free. It's what I consider fair. If we are talking about the future of gaming we need cross-platform multiplayer, 'trasfarring' saves and more unified community across platforms. I can see why large gaming companies would disagree with me due to possible loss of sales for them but Sony has been experimenting with this for a while now and it doesn't seem to have a problem with them.

Well that's my hopes for the future of gaming.

If he manages to bring his weirdness to the Switch, it'll probably be the only reason I'll get that console/handheld thing!

Not necessarily. All they'd have to do is put additional hardware in the dock to boost the power during home play and leave the portable play as is. Devs might have to gimp their games a bit more than now for portable mode, but at least then it could have compete with the PS4/Xbone when it comes to "home consoles" while at the same time keeping the portable gimmick going strong. As it is, any multi-platform title is going to have to gimp itself for the sub-par "home" gaming power...and then gimp it some more to keep portable play at least "playable".

On topic, I'm curious to see if Kojima will consider the Switch for ports of his games, third party support is always good.

Its a new technology, once the years go by, Nintendo will be able to fit more and more tech in the same space. Nintendo has promoted and sold the idea, design, and product to more than thousands of people.

We don't know if the Switch runs on a Pascal GPU, and I don't care if it runs any other architecture. As long as the games are good. Maybe Kojima wants to experiment with the Switch for his games.

For it to play "anything", whike docked it would have to be on par with current gen systems, which doesn't happen, and will be limited to remasters of old games and titles designed specifically for it. It's basically a boring handheld which you can plug onto the tv. But well played there Kojima.

"The fact you can play something at home and take it outside, this is the gamer's dream. The Switch is an evolution of that.”
Um, guess Kojima doesn't know portable consoles already exist.

“For example, often when you buy a Blu-Ray disc, it'll have a code on the inside for a digital version, so in the same respect you can watch it at home and then take it on the go on your tablet and smartphone,” he continued. “This is how movies and TV are moving, and this is how games should go.”
But this would mean less sales thru physical and ditigal versions. Bad Kojima, bad.

Kojima added that he sees the Switch as the beginning of a future where people will be able to play any game on any device.
We already have something for that. It's called a PC.
ok, there are a few hiccups with some console emulation now, but give it some years...

I dunno why, but I feel Ninty paid Kojima to say these things. Dunno, a hunch.

Kojima and Nintendo are right - the concept of the Switch is indeed ingenious. It's so ingenious that it's been done a hundred times before, it's just that nobody's done it right yet. I don't know it the Switch will work out, but so far it seems to be the most competent implementation.

You do know the dock is nothing more then a TV out cable right?
There is no way nintendo can make a better dock.
The most they can do is make a 4k on but it would only be up scaling and not true 4k output.
So there will never be a more powerfully dock. The switch simply doesnt work like that. You would have to take it apart and surface mount another chip to the processor and ram chips.
