Hardware Should I use a USB Y-cable, or is it a problem with my external hard drive?

OK, so I decided to finally hack my Wii U, and when I plugged in my good old HP SimpleSave 500GB USB external USB drive, the Wii U is unable to detect it, while my PC is still able to use it. I read that unlike the Wii, the Wii U doesn't provide enough power to the external hard drives, and usually a Y cable solves the problem. Should I use it on my drive, or is it actually a problem with the drive itself?

Sorry for sounding noobish. If there's a better place for this type of question, feel free to show me.

yes it will work I'm also using 2.5 external HDD with a Y cable as you can see in the spoiler.

Yeah i also have a WD HDD with y cable. I was upset when i found out i needed one, Funny how ps3 doesn't but wii u does, bad job nintendo.

One for requireing external HDD with your pathethic Storage device
Two for having need a such adaptor for it to work
three for NOT HAVING SD CARD USAGE. :glare:
And Four for ENCRYPTED FORMAT. How am i supposed to back up saves so i don't have to start over if something happens.

Also i didn't think anyone liked tekken for wii u, i thought about buying it when i saw mario costumes and power ups but still i never actually played it since i kinda find it hard to learn. :P

unfortunately, this is true of the ps3 as well...not enough power from the usb ports... I actually destroyed two 360 drives learning from that mistake. the xbox 360, however, does transmit enough power with one usb port to a drive that's not self-powered.

So you are prolly going to have another problem with that usb hdd. those are known to have a problem where after you format the drive, it is hard coded to install another partition to act as a virtual cd drive. in most cases this isn't a problem. but in this case it might make the console try to connect to the wrong partition. i'm posting a link to a thread that explains all this, and some people say that you can unplug one of the boards, usually called a daughter board as its smaller and attaches to the main board. Another option is to buy another USB HDD enclosure. A lot of times you can find an enclosure on amazon that comes with a Y cable for around $10. If you are going to buy the Y cable, just drop a few more dollars and get another enclosure. It's really simple to swap the drives. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Deskto...P-Simplesave-500gb-USB-2-0/td-p/163205/page/5

@Sonic Angel Knight , u were able to use an hdd (unpowered) on the ps3? I wasn't so successful. what would happen is that u'd receive a notification that too much power was being drawn from the usb drive, and it would fail almost instantly from that. whenever u'd plug the drive into a pc, one wouldn't power on; the other would say too much power was being drawn from the pc/laptop's usb port. I'm not sure what happened exactly. luckily, they were smaller drives for my xbox 360s. I took them out of the internal enclosure to use elsewhere since I had put a 1TB drive in the enclosure (mostly for dlc which is a nonissue now).

I dunno, i have a 2TB WD HDD drive with 3.0 USB. I had to create a partition on the drive, format to fat32 and then the ps3 recognized the drive easily, it wasn't a problem or issue. It worked as intended. Is how i would copy videos to the system.

On wii u, i needed the Y cable thing (Taking up two back slots on the system to use it for my wii u. I admit that was a shame so i didn't like it but it had 4 ports unlike my ps3 system.

I'm using a 2TB WD hdd for my external on the ps3 as well. it's an elements drive that I stuck into an enclosure that has a toggle switch. here it is:

my wii u hdd is in its own enclosure on top of my entertainment center. it's also an elements drive, but a 2.5" one. I'm using a y-cable there. they're plugged into the two front ports. my vWii drive is plugged into one of the back ones.

The problem with using a USB HDD that doesn't provide its own power (by this I mean the HDD having a power brick that you plug into a wall outlet) is that not every USB port has a high enough amperage rating. All USB ports provide 5.5v, but they differ about the amount of amps provided. if a device calls for say 5.5v, or 12v, and the power supply doesn't provide enough volts the device just wont power on. if the power supply provides to much volts then you can and most likely will damage the device. Amps are different though. your power supply needs to provide the amount of amps that the device requires, or more. More amps is always better. it wont make the device work any better, but if it provides more than needed then you are for sure going to be safe. The reason why this is the case is because if the device requires say 2.5 amps, and your power supply can only output say .5 amps (500mhz) the device will try to pull more amps than the power supply can handle and something is going to burn out. most of the time it's the power supply that will fry, but sometimes it can be the device that releases that magic smoke. release that magic smoke and it will never work again. There is one last thing to remember. the HDD uses a motor to spin up the platters. When an electric motor first spins up, it uses more power than compared to when it is already spinning. To solve the peak power problem, motor drivers use a capacitor. the capacitor basically acts as a battery that can dump all of its power all at once. even ceiling fans have a large capacitor to prevent blowing a fuse, or to prevent a wire becoming too hot due to dealing with all the power the motor is pulling at peak (spinning up). So lets get back to the usb boards on game consoles. yes it does cost a little more to have a USB board that provides 2.5amps, but not so much that would create a problem for the buyers. the problem is because they never ment for said device to accommodate a USB HDD. So say one of the engineers created planes for a USB board that had that high of a rating. whoever is above him/her would say why are you calling for that? all we are trying to power is a thumb drive. You see what I meen. So even if you have a game console that will spin up your HDD, it is prolly just a matter of time before you damage the USB board. A Y cable isn't really the ideal solution either. The problem with the Y cable is that most of the time the 2nd usb slot is sharing the amps. so just because you are using the power from both usb slots doesn't mean you have taken the load off of the driver board. you might get away with it working for a little while, but it could fry it at any time. the solution is cheap. get one of these, or something like it. https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Conver...85153394&sr=8-8&keywords=usb+hdd+power++cable

Yeah totally agree with that. I've seen enough fried USB ports by using non powered stuff. Anyway i'm using a powered case wich is the better way to go anyway

Hmm, that solution looks unusual, especially because it means that I won't get to have physical protection for my HDD. I have found this enclosure on Newegg that seems to have support for external power, but the question is how to choose the right AC adapter, because it doesn't come with it.

OK, after further research, I narrowed it down to these (assuming the drive inside my SimpleSave uses SATA):

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6HD4D79149

For the external power I will use a USB power cable with a USB power adapter. Is this recommended? If so, which one would you recommend? Which amperage would you recommend? 1A, 2.1A, or 2.4A?

you can go with one of those, but you are still powering the hdd from the two usb ports. as i explained before, i highly recommend an enclosure that uses power from a wall socket. mains power. This is a nice one. it's fairly cheap, uses a power supply, and also is able to charge usb powered phones, tablets, and other shit like that. I actually think i'm going to order one for myself. My wife will be sooo happy that i'm buying another piece of electronic equipment. https://www.amazon.com/Tool-free-Ex...rds=usb+hdd+sata+enclosure++power+supply++2.5

I know that I'd be required to use an additional USB port to power it, which is why I said I'll be using a USB power adapter instead. As for your suggestion, it looks like it has cool features, but in case I just want to order this instead, what power adapter should I get for it?
